"On Aug 6th they took the down payment. At that point in time, they told me they had to order materials and it would take about 2 weeks to ship. I was ready to lock" in a date and called again, and he would not answer his phone. I got transferred to and he promised me that they would be out on a certain date and they never showed up. I then talked to about no longer wanting to continue the work. He said I would have to speak with , the owner. I was finally able to reach and explained that I wanted a refund. said that he would ship the materials back but there would be a restocking fee. At that point, I didn't know if he had even ordered the materials. He then assured me that I was on the calendar for Friday and that he would be out by Monday at the latest. He never showed up and I never received a phone call. I originally signed the contract with him on 10th and claimed that my credit card information was taken down wrong. However, they never called me about it, I had to call them on Aug 6th and that's when they told me. If I hadn't called, I don't know when they would have called me about it. The numbers on his website rings and it ends up going to a dial up and there is no way for me to leave a message on his business line. The communication has been terrible, its been 2 months and the work has still not been completed. I would like to still have the work done, I just am not sure what to do at this point.

-Christian B.

"Overall, our experience with Action was great. They were prompt in returning our phone calls and scheduling service. We had positive interactions with the owners" and the quote they gave us was less than their competitors. The employees who installed the fence did leave some trash and fence remnants around our yard, which was slightly irritating to have to clean up after their personal garbage. However, they did a great job and the fence looks awesome. We would recommend them to anyone and would use them again in the future.

Tips for Dealing With Flaky Contractors

Dear Angie: I gave a fencing contractor a $1,300 deposit on a $2,600 job. Months after we signed a contract, no work has been done. What should I do?

a cedar fence

Fences provide practical and aesthetic value, but a badly conceived fence can be an eyesore and a source of conflict with neighbors. With wooden privacy fences, vinyl fences and others, it can be difficult to pick the best fencing option for your home. Consider these tips before making this investment in your home.

wooden fence

Homeowners have many fence choices for the land around their homes, but before you choose fencing material consider all of the options available to you.

pine fence posts

Underground wood needs protection from moisture, bugs

white split rail wood fence

Hiring a professional to install a fence can increase the price of your fencing project, depending on size and the type of fence.

wood pickets

If you’re in the market for fencing, you might find your options limitless. Choosing among materials, styles and configurations can be a daunting task.

I would say depends on several things:

1) what % of the job is $400 ?

2) how good is the warranty - against all types of failure, or what - cedar fences usually fail in one of two ways - tornado/hurricane/waves/flood/car collision takes them out, or the posts (if not treated timber) rot out. The fence itself will change color and get fuzzy as it weathers, but should last 15-20 years in most areas.

3) generally, a fence is not something you would pay for a warranty on - if properly put up and with concreted-in copper chromate or copper napthalate treated posts (the green preservative) should last a long time and not need warranty work basically till the fasteners fail or the fence slat boards split too badly.

4) if I was going to spend extra money on a wood fence, it would be for a good quality penetrating sealer, not steel posts.

Fence Company reviews in Madison

They did an excellent job. I was particular about what I wanted the fence (height, gate details, etc) and they were great to work with. The quality of materials and their craftsmanship were outstanding. For example, they handled grade changes beautifully and went to extra effort to make sure I was happy with how everything looked and functioned. ...More All for a competitive price. I have worked with dozens of contractors and is among the best. I would use them again in a heartbeat and recommend them to anyone.

is not the cheapest place, but they installed a quality product with no shortcuts at a fair price. The fence looks great. The installer took great care around existing landscaping. Onsite communication was great.

Called because of the great reviews on Angie's List. (Actually placed a number of calls to Angie's List recommended fencing companies). Didn't hear back for a couple of days, so called again, and reached the owner. He told me that he was planning to call me shortly. The next day, he came out to give an estimate ...More for a very project. He gave me a verbal estimate and promised a written estimate in the next day or two. A week later, I called again, because I had not heard back and asked him if he would do the project for about 10% less. He verbally agreed, and said he would have the invoice out shortly.
Another couple of days went by until I received the estimate, with a request for about 60% up front. Because of my experience to date, I seriously considered the possibility that I would send these guys $240 and not hear anything back for weeks or months. I wrote in the contract that accompanied my returned check that they had two weeks to install the gate, or the price would be reduced to the $240 I had already paid.
Never heard anything back from them about receiving the check and the next week went by without hearing anything at all. The following Monday, I received an email that they would be out that afternoon. This was too short of notice to be home while they did their work, but when I arrived, the gate was there.
The gate seems to be good quality. The posts on both side of it appear to be pretty sturdy. I'd have liked the gate a bit lower, but it's what I was looking for.
A note to future customers; there's no question that the owner is a nice guy. I did get the feeling though he was struggling to keep everything organized, and being able to give me advance notice of when he was having his crew come out was not possible.
I'm really hesitant to send someone money that could be pocketing my money for weeks with no work being done. Perhaps that's the way this industry works, but it makes me feel really uncomfortable. Given the uncertainty in my experience, I'd recommend offering full payment when the project is done.

provided me with a quote for $1452.53 for a 6' tall fence (which I signed and returned on May 28), collected my 50% down payment ($726.27), and scheduled fence installation for Friday, June 27. So far, so good.
On installation day, workers arrived, tore down the existing fence, and began installing a 4' fence. ...More When my husband brought the height error to their attention, they confirmed with (sales rep who did the estimate) that it should be 6', returned to the shop and brought back materials for the 6' fence. Shortly thereafter, the installers received a phone call from , the owner of the business, to stop work, pack up and leave the site. When I got in contact with the office, they explained that they couldn't find a contract for $1452.53 in their system, and the project would cost more $1600 - a $200 increase. If we wanted them to continue work, we needed to pay their increased price.
Despite repeated requests to speak with , the only person who would talk with me was the office administrator, . On Friday, Monday and Tuesday, I asked that they 1) honor the existing contract or 2) refund the 50% down payment so we could hire a different company. On Monday, accused me of altering the numbers in their contract from $1600+ to $1452.53.
Finally, informed me that they cannot complete the job for the $1452.53, and also refuse to refund my full down payment, stating that I am responsible for the costs of labor to tear down the existing fence, so they will refund the down payment less costs of labor. Unfortunately, contract law states that because they called off the work, they're responsible for all costs.
In addition, because called his crew off the site after they had demolished our old fence, we were left without any fence at all, so my husband and I had to purchase and install temporary fencing, as well as haul away the materials from the old fence.
Our credit card company is disputing the $726.27 charge. All I want is my deposit back so I can hire another company to do the job. Ironically, other companies I've talked to have been shocked, stating is a "large, reputable company." I wish I'd been able to work with them when they lived up to that reputation.
- Cheryl S.

was responsive and easy to work with. He came out to give us a quote promptly. He was the lowest bid, but also seemed most knowledgeable. The staff were punctual and respectful. The job was completed on the date we set within the timeline gave. I'm still waiting on the final bill, so I can't ...More say yet how accurate the proposal was.
The fence looks very nice and you can tell that takes pride in quality craftsmanship.
It was a good experience working with . I would recommend them to friends, and if I have any other fence installation needs in the future, I will definitely go back to them.

Before building my fence, I did a lot of research and decided to go with a 6 foot cedar privacy fence. I grew up with a 4 foot white fence with 4x4 posts, and the posts were always rotting and needing to be replaced. So I knew that I wanted to use steel posts. I really liked the Master Halco Postmaster ...More fence posts, and was the best place to get them. Menards and Home Depot can special order them, but when you factor in the cost of the concrete, the cost of renting the auger to drill the holes, and most of all - the time - we added it up and it ended up being only $400 more expensive to have install the posts. Plus if you have a company install something permanently, you don't have to pay sales tax, as it is considered "real" property. So they charged $47.50 per Postmaster Post and then $40 each for installing.
So they showed up around 8 am, and I talked with the two guys, who answered all my questions. They started pneumatically driving in the posts (it's loud!), and it took them about 2 hours to do the 27 posts (about 200 linear feet). Then they used post hole diggers to dig the gate posts and that took about an hour for them to dig and set those in concrete.
Since I am going to be building the fence myself, they were giving me all sorts of great tips and explanations. I couldn't believe that it only took them 3 hours to do all the work.
Side note: it was going to cost $5,786 if I wanted them to install the entire fence, and not just the posts. But the lumber only cost me about $1200, so I figured I could save almost 2000 buy doing it myself. However, if I didn't want to or couldn't do it myself, I do think that price of 5,786 is reasonable.
- James E.

It went well, there was an initial snag with posts and buried power lines, however this was quickly sorted out and the installers used concrete and shallower holes in that area. This did raise the price slightly, but not significantly. The fence is holding up well 2 years later.
- Dirk N.

I contacted provider to get an estimate for a privacy fence for my yard. I was contacted quickly and an appointment was set up for the following week. The day of the appointment I received a call at work that was not able to make the appointment and wanted to reschedule. We rescheduled for the following week and no one ever ...More showed up. I called the office prior to closing and left a message asking if anyone was coming. I never received any contact after that. Provider had my cell number, my work number and could have messaged me back via Angie's List. I consider no contact from provider to be unprofessional and therefore went with another fencing company. My sister met with 2 weeks prior for an estimate for a privacy fence for her yard and after my experience will not be using Ideal to put in their fence either.
