Louisville dance instructors discuss the lessons they offer

What styles of dancing do you teach?

Beth Kinney: "For adults we offer ballet, jazz and three levels of tap."

Alex Loukhnel: "We offer ballroom, Latin, swing and salsa"

Bryant Glisson: "We offer Latin, ballroom and all the social dances."

What's your favorite dance and why?

Kinney: "Tap. It's what I'm best at."

Loukhnel: "The Fox-trot is my favorite. It's pure style."

Glisson: "My favorite is the waltz. I appreciate its beauty and structure."

Besides learning how to dance, what are some other reasons people take lessons?

Kinney: "Some people take lessons for exercise or as a social activity. Most often, students took dance as a child and want to continue with their lessons."

Loukhnel: "They use dance as a social activity, people love to attend and participate. Also, it's healthy and positive for weight control and exercise."

Glisson: "Some people do it as a social activity. You meet a lot of people and build your confidence. It also builds communication skills between couples."

How do you charge for dance lessons and what's the cost?

Kinney: "It's $12 for a one-hour group class."

Loukhnel: "A group class is $7 per hour, a private lesson is a bit more. There's no obligation. They pay only for the lessons they attend."

Glisson: "We charge $60 for a one-hour private lesson. Or a group class is $10 for the first session and $5 for every session thereafter."

How often do you recommend your clients take a class with you? Do they need to practice outside of class?

Kinney: "They can take classes as often as they want. If they want to practice outside of class, that's fine. Our adult students are usually too busy to practice."

Loukhnel: "At the minimum you should take a class is once a week. Yes, they should practice or come to our social parties."

Glisson: "You really need to be there once a week. Yes, always practice outside of class."

How do you handle the most dancing-challenged clients?

Kinney: "We encourage them to try and just enjoy it. We don't expect them to be perfect, we just want them to enjoy dancing."

Loukhnel: "We show them how easy it is to dance. They're usually fast learners. When it's explained the right way, you'd be surprised how fast you can learn."

Glisson: "I like to break things down as much as possible and go step-by-step - literally."
