Los Angeles painters reveal most requested colors

Is it nearly time for you to repaint your home? Are you getting tired of staring at that obnoxious hue you hate so much? Maybe you’re bored with the traditional off-white shade and want to spice it up a little. Whatever your reasons for repainting are, choosing the right colors for your home can make a huge difference in the way it looks and feels.

However, there are so many colors to choose from, picking the right ones can be difficult. To make the decision a little easier, some painters in the Greater Los Angeles area offer up their expertise on what colors are the most popular and why.

California has long led the nation in the green movement, which is not only changing the way we do things but also influencing the colors we want to see in our homes.

“People are really liking lighter earth tones,” says Danny Tron of highly rated One Way Paint and Design in El Segundo, Calif. “Especially the mossy and sage greens.”

Earth tones tend to be popular choices for both interior and exterior of the home. However, the exterior tends to be the easiest part choose a color for because there is less space to cover and fewer outside factors to consider.

James Lee, of highly rated House Painting, Inc. in La Crescenta, Calif., tells us how he helps his clients choose a color.

“For the exterior, we have to take the color of the roof into account," he says. "If the roof is a dark color, we recommend a light color for the house.”

The interior tends to be a little more complicated, since there are several rooms to choose colors for. Varying colors by room instead of picking one color for the whole house is a trend that is increasingly popular.

“Think of it this way. The hallways, family room, dining room and kitchen all represent the heart of the home. Everything that is separated from the heart by a closed door is an organ,” Tron explains. “People usually pick a base color for the heart and different colors for all the organs.”

Tron suggests a light color for the heart and darker, bolder colors for the organs. This method gives each room of the house a unique quality.

When picking interior colors, Lee takes into account the color of the floors, window coverings, furniture and doors to come up with a color that works well with everything you have in your home and brings all the colors together.

If you’re not good with colors, don’t worry. A Los Angeles painting professional can take a look at your home and come up with a list of colors that would work well with what you have.

Our painting experts share the following tips:

  • Keep it light. Darker colors can make a room feel smaller. If you want to incorporate a darker, bolder color into your home, use it on just one wall as an accent and choose a lighter color for the others.
  • Professionals usually match the accent colors to the furniture you have in your home. Take note of color schemes that already exist and play them up with matching paint colors.
  • “Shades of red tend to be the color that homeowners get sick of the most,” Tron shares. “It’s the one color we’re called back to change most often.” If you’re weary about red but really want to incorporate it into your home, try a smaller dose of it. Using red for an accent wall or trim instead of as a base color is a more subtle move.
