Building a home in the Los Angeles hills

If you've been thinking about home building in Los Angeles, one of the top considerations you need to focus on is the location where you wish to build.

When thinking about location, you should consider the land and whether you want to build your home on one of Los Angeles’ famous hills. Home building on a hill has both positives and negatives, and once you are aware of these, you can make your decision based on your personal preferences.

Angie’s List has highly rated Los Angeles home builders who can help and give their expert advice for anyone beginning the home building process. Sign in to see company ratings and read recent reviews from members who requested similar services more than 1,200 times during 2011.

If your ideal location is on a hill, consider the advantages. The most obvious advantage to living on a hill is that you are much safer in the event of a flood. The water will run off your hill into valleys and depressions. This may also mean that you are eligible for a discount on your home insurance, although you will need to ask your insurance company about this.

Home building on a hill allows you to have a great view of Los Angeles. Whether you build in the valley or have an outstanding view of the city, you’re likely to have the million-dollar view others would envy. Without trees or other homes to block the way, a large window in your main living room open to the view or a large deck or outdoor living space could increase the value of your home significantly.

Since the only people likely to be driving up your hill are your neighbors, you might find the area to be much quieter than a typical subdivision. Less traffic also means less chance for accidents and decreased neighborhood crime.

Just as with any location, there are disadvantages that come along with choosing to build on a hill. Living in a higher elevation area could increase your chances of being victim of inclimate weather. You may get more rain or be subject to higher winds than those living below you. If you are a gardener, this could work out to your advantage, but you will also have to keep a closer eye on your roof and gutters, especially if you have trees. They might be prone to damage if the weather becomes more intense.

Make sure to have the foundation of your home and the stability of the hill itself inspected by a professional. In the case of an earthquake or severe weather, you don't want to find that your home has been relocated to the bottom of the hill.

In Los Angeles, home building on a hill could be a risk, but those worth taking it may receive a big payoff in private views and living space. Consult with a home building professional to determine if building on a hill is the right location for your next build.
