Tarzana, Calif. contractor provides solution for squeaky floors

My first and second floors have areas that squeak, and there seem to be more every day. My house is about 29 years old and has carpeting all over except in the kitchen, foyer and under some tub areas. What can be done to correct this problem?

Squeaking floors are caused when a gap forms between the subfloor and the floor above it, says Ariel Azriel, president of highly rated AGA Construction Inc. in Tarzana, Calif., which also services Los Angeles. Several circumstances can cause this separation, including wear and tear accumulated over a house's lifespan.

Azriel says over time, the subfloor loosens from its floor covering. "However, the most common cause is when the subfloor is not secured tightly enough," Azriel says. "All the earthquakes we have in California also add to this problem."

Depending on the severity of the squeaking, Azriel suggests repairing or replacing the floor. "The best thing to do is to replace the entire floor," he says. "The cost depends on the square footage and type of wood. On average, you'll pay between $8 to $12 per square foot."

Any remodeling job, valued at $300 or more, or any project that affects the structural stability of a house, requires a permit. Azriel strongly suggests hiring a professional for floor replacement. "Remember, a company must be licensed with the state of California in order to do work," he says.
