"The biggest thing is cutting your trees back from your roof line," says Jeremy Bailey, owner of highly rated Animal Capture Wildlife Control in Los Angeles.

"If you have trees touching the roof, it's an environmental ladder for animals to get onto and maybe into your house," Bailey says.

Once inside, squirrels can cause lots of damage, says Dennis Beltran, owner of highly rated Beltran and Sons in Claremont, Calif. "They pull up insulation, urinate and leave droppings, and they chew wires, which may cause a fire," he says.

Beltran and Bailey also advise homeowners to periodically inspect their home's exterior for gaps, rotten wood, loose shingles or other possible entry points. Those areas should be sealed once you're certain no animals are inside.

Utility wires attached to the house can give squirrels roof access. Bailey offers a suggestion for that problem.

"Take a 4-foot PVC pipe and cut a line from end to end. Slip it over the wire. When the squirrel tries to walk across to your roof, it will slip and fall," he says.

Beltran says the price for his services starts at around $200 to inspect a home, trap and relocate any animals and patch holes with heavy-gauge wire mesh. Bailey says he charges $100 to inspect the home and set up traps.

"When something's caught, I charge $35 to come out and then $50 a squirrel to relocate the animal in the mountains or somewhere like that," he says.
