Children often are diagnosed with illnesses and conditions that affect adults, but because of their special needs, they are often referred to pediatric specialists. Specialists in all areas can provide treatment plans to improve health and quality of life.

Pediatric optometry

Pediatric optometry is the branch of medicine that deals with the examination, diagnosis and treatment of children's eyes. Pediatric optometrists are specially trained to treat visual disorders in children.

An eye screening at school is not enough to know whether your child’s vision is in full working order. They need to regularly visit an optometrist.

Children are often unaware of their own vision changes because they usually happen so gradually, meaning extra caution should be used, says Murray. (Photo courtesy of Angie’s List member Radcliffe F. of Fremont, California)

A child's vision is something that can deteriorate over time with few symptoms. One highly rated provider explains how regular eye exams can help prevent this.

Absolutely you have rights to your own medical records. You may have to put it in writing and go through the offices records department. Call and ask to speak with the records department and ask their protocol.

My 15 yr old son was referred to the office for a Developmental Optometry exam. When I looked at the referral I realized it was over 30 miles from my home; I seriously questioned why we were being sent so far when there were so many offices closer, including the optometrist who my other son and husband currently use. I figured there was a good reason and after meeting with Dr.
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
, I knew exactly why!
Upon learning he was being driven so far for an eye appointment, my son declared, “My vision is perfect, I
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
’t need to go”. Note, we have two types of drives with my son. Local, those under 20 minutes that

’t require Dramamine (for motion sickness) which tend to be more acceptable, and then those requiring the nasty taste of Dramamine. The whole way there I kept thinking, why am I driving so far? The whole way home I kept thinking, I am so glad I drove so far!
My son is not much for talking, but from the point he met Dr.
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
he was very at ease and open with his words. Dr.
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
talked to my son (not at him or down to him as many tend to do) and got him to open up and I learned things for the first time about what happens to my son after he reads for more than x minutes. I was astonished that basically a stranger got him admitting to things he didn’t ever tell his trusted circle. Remember, this is the same kid who about an hour previously declared his vision was perfect.
Throughout the appointment, Dr.
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
was professional, thorough, warm and understanding with my son. He really listened to him, and clearly explained to him what his eyes were doing in a way that he could understand. He was also extremely patient with my son, as his eyes kept watering from bright lights in his eye (and yes sometimes before the light went in his eyes, his trained response).
Three months later we went for a follow-up. This time I didn’t get the typical “I
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
’t want to go” and he took his Dramamine and got into the car without complaint. Again, my son felt very at ease with Dr.
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
and even admitted that he wasn’t wearing his glasses as ordered. Again, Dr.
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
was very thorough in his evaluation based on what he was hearing, put him through
additional testing to
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
out any other issues and see how he was doing with the glasses, and talked to my son in a way that was clear and concise. He didn’t scold him or try to trick him into wearing his glasses. He simply discussed with him the importance of wearing his glasses and also about where my son sees himself in the future. He again explained how the glasses would help. Dr.
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
told my son about his past, to help make my son’s journey a little more relatable and to help him make better choices.
I now have no reservations about the added drive. The local optometrist center that part of the family sees doesn’t come close to comparing. Someday when I admit that I should probably see an optometrist again, I will definitely be driving to see Dr.

We swear by this practice - and have recommended Dr.
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
to our friends. He is always so incredibly kind, thorough, and knowledgable!
When I took my mom to see him, I was so impressed by how he tailored the exam to her hearing and processing needs. At 93 yrs. she's pretty amazing - but still, most doctor appointments are a strain because they speak too quickly and quietly...and frankly, don't treat the elderly as a "real" people. This was not the case with Dr.
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
. Just as I predicted, Dr.
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
's presription for my mom was right on target, because he conducted her exam at a pace that really evaluated her vision, instead of putting her through a stressful, confusing flurry of choices and questions. He made her feel comfortable and met her vision needs perfectly. Can't say enough good about Dr.
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
and the fine people who work with him!

Receiving my glasses was the usual amount of time.
The staff fitted my glasses and I left the office.
The problem, I feel, was the lab. My glasses were supposed to darken with exposure to sunlight, but they didn't
National replaced them for free.
But again, I felt the problem was with the lab that made the glasses. I wear these glassses but am looking for a new place to order a new pair.

Dr.
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
has all the new toys an optometrist dreams of: the latest eye care knowledge, the latest testing gadgets (no more drops and air puffs, folks), and the latest edgy, hip frames for sale. He put my young daughter instantly at ease and walked her right through her first eye exam -- She actually enjoyed it! The frames here are so fun that my daughter was mad she didn't need glasses, and I was sorta happy that I do. I felt really good knowing we were getting the most up-to-date eye care available. The exam didn't cost anymore than the exam you get at a franchise cube. You can spend a lot for frames here, but you'll also find frames at the lower end of the price spectrum. It's a bonus that it all happens in a design-savvy office full of industrially inspired worktables and display cases that Dr.
Kansas City Pediatric Optometrists Provider Name Locked
commissioned.

I was first referred to "Dr. Z" by our pediatrician for our son. Our first reason for seeing the doctor was that his tear ducts were still clogged. The second reason is that we have a family history of congenital glaucoma and wanted to make sure that he looked healthy. Our first appointment was when he was just a 8 months old. The office is small, but run very efficiently. I found it very reassuring to see quite a few little ones. The appointment itself was quick, but the "Dr. Z" explained every procedure and why it was being done. Everything looked good, but she wanted to see us again at a year if the tear ducts remained closed. Fortunately, they opened so he had a recheck at age two. This appointment was a little longer complete with his eyes being dilated to check for the glaucoma. Everything was fine. It was quite a relief. We could not be happier with "Dr. Z." We have also had possible pink eye scares and the office was extremely terrific about squeezing us in.

I have been pleased with his care for many years. He has helped me to make the adjustment to bifocals and has been very candid about contact lens and other products and how cost effective they are. He has saved me money!

She does vision therapy. Regular checkup is usually an annual exam and if there are problems either caused by head injury, disabilities or processing disorders, they use vision therapy to put the eyes to work together better. Vision therapy is more than just glasses that is actually corrected and not like band aided but it actually fixes it. Vision Therapy is like eye exercises. We go in usually every week for twelve weeks and then get re-evaluated if we needed again.
