"They came out and took my furnace apart. 15 minutes later the tech came upstairs and told me that the furnace was shut off and red flagged as dangerous. He stated" there there were small cracks in my heat exchanger that could leak carbon monoxide and me. The tech then pulled out a notebook and started trying to sell me a new furnace. I had him give me a quote and then I got a second opinion of my furnace. The new hvac company did some tests and said that there was nothing wrong with my heat exchanger and that my furnace was safe to use. I feel that this company is trying to scam people out of their money and I have filed complaints with the BBB and Angie's List.

"Visit with employee was good. As the employee was leaving he said have a good day, and I asked what I owed him for the service. He told me "don't worry" about it." I then asked are you sure, and he said, "Yep." I told him to have a good day and he left. I was surprised that he didn't charge me but thought I guess since he didn't do anything other then reconnect a wire he was being nice. Then a week later I get a bill from for $85.00. I was shocked to receive a bill after their employee told me, and my wife heard, that I didn't owe anything. I then call and ended up talking to " " apparently an owner." I explained what I was told, and he proceeds to tell me that the employee was wrong and must have thought it was covered by warranty. I then tell him that he shouldn't have said I didn't owe anything if he didn't know for sure. I then ask if he is going to back-up what his employee told me that I didn't owe anything, and he said no and that I owe $85.00. He then asks if I had a service completed, and I said yes, but I wouldn't have a problem paying at the time of service, but I was told I didn't owe anything so I felt I shouldn't be charged. disagreed and said his employee shouldn't have told me it didn't cost anything but I owe $85.00. I then tell I will be putting negative reviews on yelp the BBB and he said he would send me to collections. I appreciated responding to my home on the weekend, and would have paid the $85.00 at the time the service was completed, but to be told I don't owe anything and then get a bill. Something's not right there. It would have been better if once they realized the mistake they should have called me and explained what happened, and I would have paid the $85.00. Instead they bill me, and then the "Owner" won't make any concessions to make the customer happy. It was a joke to me. I won't be using in the future if this is how they treat their customers. I won't recommend them to anyone I know. I'd rather use MVP or AB May in the future.

Hiring an HVAC service

The awkward-to-pronounce acronym stands for "heating, ventilation and air conditioning" which in many respects are completely different processes.

what should you pay.  You pay what you can afford.  1100sqft unit requires a min. of a two ton unit.  prices range from 2100-2900 depending upon the seers of the system.  13 seer is the min. the law requires  and for your situation with 1100 sqft.  do not worry about the seers as long as it is to code.  the bigger the house the more seers for economy.  1100 sqft is at the border line for a two ton system.  It is more important to have your new system balance, there is where you get the economy on your electric bill and gas.  Bryant, lenox, ruud and carrier are the brands you should stay with. All have the same basic factory warrantee and will last you longer than you expect as long as you maintain it with regular check ups twice a year once in the spring and then in the fall.

The only thing of importance, is the hvac professional you choose to use. Alot of manufacturer's pieces are built relatively the same, and will last about the same amount of time. The thing that matters most is what you can not compare between companies, and that is the installation. Purchasing a system is not like purchasing a car, where no matter where you buy it, they are all the same. Each installation is different, and usually what you are paying for is the level of expertise, and quality of the installation, the company who will actual give you the warranty, and the comfort that you will receive. Manufacturers warranties disappear every day. They always have a loophole where they can get out of paying, but your local dealer wants to keep you happy for future work, and to protect his reputation in the communiy. Look up 4 year old Nordyne and Goodman warranty problems. Choose the HVAC professional first. It will cost you the least in the long run. I have had to totally redo plenty of installations that were just performed because of an uncomfortable customer, and a system that keeps breaking down. The equipment is only as good as it's installation, and over 70% are not installed correctly.
?
Yes Jupiter. It depends on the severity of the situation, is the mold encapsulated in the insulation. If yes, than replace [insulation] it with new. Is it on the casing of the heater? If yes, clean it with a mold neutralizing metal cleaner. It's not a matter of finding something or someone to clean or address the existing mold. It's a matter of finding a contractor to rectify what is causing the mold grow. It's coming from excessive moisture in the air-handler unit. I can say with 100% surety you’re dealing with poor airflow and/or incorrect equipment sizing! Either issue will cause excessive icing of the evaporator coil, which leads to excessive condensate water in the system. The condensate will eventually overflow the drain pan leaving stagnant water in the air-handler housing, which leads to mold growth. I would not let any contractor do any kind of temporary repair, add any device like a UV light or air-cleaning product until the aforementioned is corrected. I talk a lot about this in my videos and on my website. It is the result of improper system design from unqualified contractors. There is a reason why some guys cost more than others, and this is one reason why!

?
I'd rate them equal,or close,as with several other brands. I'd be more concerned about the difference in installation and service down the road. Difficult to determine the difference ,but asking for detailed info about their installation, may convince you to choose one over the other.

The Dept. of Energy states that poor installations can cause a 30% efficiency loss! Plus with Gas their are saftey issues, venting properly etc.,and of couse the need for a "low Level" Carbon Monoxide Alarm.
?
I think maybe you are confusing SEER, which is an efficiency-related rating (higher SEER means more effective use of the electric power used to compress the gas), and TONS rating, which is a measure of the total cooling power of the system. (Tons used to mean how many tons per hour of ice was used in evaporative cooling building systems - a Refrigeration or Cooling Ton equals 12,000 Btu/Hour of energy exchange. A BTU, which is another antique measure but still used, is the energy needed to change the temperature of a pound of water one degree fahrenheit. Unfortunately, because of varying humidity and evaporation, this is not readily related to house air heating or cooling without a lot of assumptions and some computations. Relating this to today's world - the Manuals BayAreaAc referred to account for all these energy conversions and determine an estimated cooling (or heating) requirement for your specific house. The type of construction, solar exposure, general climatic conditions such as average temperatures, humidity, and hottest and coldest normal ambient temperatures and desired inside temperture are all taken into account in the more sophisticated versions of the analysis, so there is no "standard", though a rough old rule of thumb was about 1 ton of cooling per 500SF of house. Obviously, this was a WAG only because it did not account for insulation, type of roofing, whether you live in Alaska or Miami, etc. The ACCA manuals do a very simplified form of evaluation to arrive at a "design", which generally will be adequate. OF course, highly precise calculations are not really needed because A/C units generally come in even ton ratings - so if you are at say 2.6 ton requirement you will be getting a 3-ton unit anyway. SEER ratings are not a direct measure of efficiency, but the relative difference between ratings gives you good idea of the unit's relative efficency in using electricity - so a 16 SEER should be about 19% more efficient (so roughly comparable lower electricity bill) than a comparably sized 13 SEER unit. 13 SEER is the lowest efficiency currently allowed to be built for general use, 19 SEER is about the highest efficiency made by pretty much all manufacturers, and about 25 SEER is the highest rated though very pricey shelf-item units, though special construction custom units can reach about 30 SEER. Note however, like any government sponsored rating, much of it is hooey when you get down to it - for instance, SEER ratings are figured based on 80 degree inside air temp and 82 degrees outside, when that is far from the normal case of mid to low seventies inside and high eighties or above outdoors. This makes the absolute SEER rating meaningless, but relative numbers still have meaning in comparing units. Note these efficiency ratings are for conventional air conditoners and heat pumps working in ambient air conditions. Ground sourced Geothermal or lake/river exchange cooling units, though initially more expensive in most cases, can greatly exceed the air-exchange unit efficiencies because they are exchanging heat with cold natural water rather than with a high-temperature outside air, and instead of continually compressing a gas are just circulating cold water. I worked on one geothermal cooling project which had almost infinite efficiency, which of course makes no sense - but the only power was for sensors and a control valve as the water flow was single-pass under gravity flow, so no power was used to circulate the water.
?

Assuming you already have an installed units with all ductwork and so forth, small square footage furnace and AC can generally run anywhere form $2000-$5000 for each unit, or about $4000-10000 for a combined unit, depending on ease of installation, etc. This assumes your existing plumbing, electrical, ductwork, etc are directed suitable, so it is merely a matter of cutting  in a new unit and hooking it up. The lowest price would be for a minimally efficient unit, the upper number for highest efficiency.

If you are changing the type of heat (baseboard to forced air or electric to gas, for instance) or installing AC from scratch, then running power, ductwork, etc can up to double that number.

If you live near the coast (and depending on how hot you will let the condo get before cooling kicks in) the cost savings of a high efficiency unit might not pay for itself. Of course, if you are in the San Gabriel Mountains and really need winter heat, or in the Mohave desert or inland valley area and really need serious air conditioning, then a high efficiency unit (which can cost twice as much) might pay for itself in 5-10 years.

Your utility company (companies if gas heat with electric AC) can help with guides on how much your savings might be with different efficiencies, and may have an energy efficiency rebate program for efficient units. Also, the California Energy Commission has information and online calculators for that, as well as rebate programs for energy efficiency. There is also a federal energy efficiency rebate program (though it is generally limited to a tax credit equal to 10% of the cost of energy efficient retrofits, unless it is considered an "alternative energy" system). Pay attnetion to these energy rebate programs - I have a neighbor who, between state and federal program, had the entire cost of his insulation upgrade and furnace/hot wate heater system replacement covered in toto, except for few hundred $ for the initial energy audit. About $8000 in work for about $300, with about $100/month reduction in gas bills.

As always with condo units, check with the condo manager and the bylaws to find out what the rules are - some condos require matching units or installation by a certain contractor for ease of maintenance, and in many condos the heating and AC are actually the responsibility of the condo association or the bylaws require that the association handle the installation but you pay the cost, etc. Also, major work of this type usually has to be coordinated with the condo manager, and there may be time of day limitations on work hours, etc.

And of course make sure your HVAC contractor, if you end up choosing him, is licensed, bonded, insured, and well recommended, and whether any repairs to walls, floors, ceiling etc necessitated by replacing the system are or are not covered in his bid (he would subcontract this out, or more likely tell you that you need a general contractor to supervize plumber, electrician, plasterer, painter, flooring contractor, etc).

He called to let me know he was on his way and he did show up on time. He went to the basement and began work immediately. He only left one time to go to his truck for something that he needed. He worked for 30-45 minutes until he finished. After the work he put everything back and cleaned up the area.

We originally had a different company inspect our furnace, and they told us it was a hazard and needed to be replaced immediately. We then called for a second opinion. came out and checked out our furnace and said that it was in fine condition and did not need to be replaced. He was incredibly honest ...More and trustworthy. He could have mislead us like the first company and told us it needed to be replaced, but instead he reassured us. In the future we only call every single time we have HVAC problems!!

I had visit my rental property to perform a tune-up on my a/c using an Angie's list coupon for a $59 tune-up. The tech arrived on time, and was very professional. After visiting with my tenant and assessing the system, he called me to let me know that the unit was very low on freon. We agreed to charge it so he could continue ...More the tuneup. When completed, he informed me that he had identified a leak, but a separate service call was necessary to repair the leak as he was not equipped - he was just a "tune-up" guy. He quoted me the service charge of $89 but couldn't quote me a cost for the repair. I agreed.
He then marked the location of the leak and initiated a service call for someone with the right tools to come by and finish. He prepared and emailed me an invoice for what had been done so far, but told me I could pay the second tech once the job was finished. He noted on the invoice everything he had done and observed for the next tech. The invoice showed a balance of $326 ($89 for service call, and 3 lbs x $79/lb for freon). He settled up with me for just the tune-up by processing the Angie's list coupon and he was on his way.
The second tech arrived later that afternoon, read the notes on the first invoice, then began his own assessment of the system. He confirmed there was a hole in the lineset and then called me and explained it would be $268 to solder/braze the leak. He then tried to upsell me another $350 to perform a leak check of the A-coil afterwards. I didn't bite, so he proceeded to complete the job by repairing the leak and filling the unit with freon. He then prepared and emailed me a new invoice that included all work performed that day (except the tuneup), and all freon that had been installed. Everything was as we had agreed so I gave him my credit card information over the phone and authorized him to run it for the full amount at a total cost of $900.
A week later I just happend to be reviewing my credit card activity online and I noticed two charges from - one for the authorized charge of $900; and another, unauthorized charge for $326 that was processed the day after the service was completed. I called first thing that morning to inquire about it, and was told they would have to investigate and get back with me. At the end of the day, I recieved a call from someone named . As we discussed, it became apparent that their accouning department had taken it upon themselves to process the first, $326 invoice from the tune-up guy without my consent; and they did so by copying and using the credit card information used on the second, consolidated invoice. They did this without even attempting to contact me to request authorization.
then apologized for the "mis-communication" and agreed to process a credit for $326 back to my card. It has now been 5 days and this has still not been completed. The latest estimate from her is another 7-10 days to process this through their accounting dept. I could have accepted that this was an honest mistake to illegally use of my credit card information; however, I'm appalled by their complete lack of effort to correct this in a timely manner. 7-14 business days in unacceptable to processes a credit. Perhaps the Attorney General's office will provide some motivation.
My overall experience/opinion:
Their technicians were very skilled and very professional, but beware of being oversold on additional services that aren't necessary. It seemed evident to me that they are trained to upsell you on unnecessary add-on services. I happen to be pretty familiar with these systems and was able to challenge him on the necessity of his "recommendations". Keep your guard up.
Their prices are high, but are in line with the other big-name companies out there. You'd be much better off to find a small company without the huge overhead structure if you can. I only tried because of the Angie's list deal. That was a mistake. I'll go back to using A-1 Complete from now on.
Their customer service/accounting department has been appalling. If you do decide to use , be very protective of your payment information!

This is an update to a previous review I wrote dated 7/15/15 that was very good as far as installation of a completely new HVAC system by . We hired this Company even though there was a recent F given by a previous customer out of only 6 reviews. Not good odds, but I believe in giving small business's a ...More . Now I know why there was an F and should have taken that review more seriously. Since this system was installed 15th, the New Furnace had never been tested. After a cool night, I decided to test our new Furnace by running it to bring the temp up 1 degree to take the chill out of the air. The Furnace came on but never blew out hot air. When setting the thermostat to the off position the system did not ever shut off so I had to turn it off at the unit in the basement. Clearly this was indication that a problem existed and needed attention before cold temps arrive which could be anytime. I also wanted to handle this before upcoming surgery in which case I may not be able to deal with it afterwards. The next day was a Sunday and I knew they were closed, this was not an emergency, so I just sent an email explaining what had happened so they would have it on Monday as many Companies do not even respond to emails until the next business day. Surprisingly, I received an email response that day which was Sunday from the owner saying it sounds like the thermostat is not working properly and that was it. Keep in mind that I am communicating with the owner of this Company. A polite, professional, business like response would be "I am sorry you are experiencing a problem with you new unit so please call tomorrow & we will schedule an appointment" but he didn't do that. All of the other Company's that I do business with such as our plumber, electrician, even Dr appointments can be scheduled via email so I had no idea that apparently considers this method of contact annoying. The fact he was responding to my email me to believe I was using a correct method of correspondence. So I sent another email asking if there was a problem with their thermostat's as his guys (who were great at customer service) had to exchange the 1st one the same day of installation because the 1st didn't work and if so what do we need to do? I received another 1 line response of "Not usually. Maybe they had a bad batch" and that was it. There was no response to my question of what do we need to do and no mention that I should call. Unfortunately I am not a mind reader so when still no solution was offered from the owner, I sent a 3rd email asking if the thermostat they installed was under warranty and if so could we schedule a swap and maybe do our pre winter maintenance. I did say no hurry but when there was no response by the following afternoon which was Monday, I sent another email stating I was very disappointed in his 1 line responses that offer no solutions. Then I received a quick response saying he would cover their warranty work and if I wanted a service call I needed to call the office. My husband and I both were beginning to feel that we were being treated rudely but at that time I didn't really want to believe that was true. So I called the office several hours later. Guess who answered. That's right. the owner and the same guy I had been emailing with answered the phone like he always had in the past. That is when it became painfully clear he had just been jerking us around for reasons unknown. I said "hello , I guess I need to talk to someone in the office." He sounded a little surprised and indicated he was in the office because someone was not there. I stated that he needed to send someone to find out why our new furnace does not work. An appointment was scheduled for today 9/24/15 between 3:30 & 4:30. After going thru all of the above, I was appalled that I had to go through all of that in the 1st place so I later sent an email stating that I knew he was young and hopefully his customer service skills would improve with time, that being a dick to his customers and making them jump through hoops would not ever serve him well, and that larger Companies have gone out of business from poor customer communications. I went on to say that I wanted him and his Company to be successful. Today himself came for the appointment at 4:30. By now I was miffed at how I had been treated so I asked him if he thought it was acceptable to make a customer contact him 5 times about a problem. I was and still am shocked at how he responded. I now wonder if he came himself for a confrontation because he went off immediately and started shouting that I had emailed on a Sunday several times instead of calling. Hindsight tells me that this must be a pet peeve of his but I had no idea at the time. This is the same type of excuse he used on his other F rating implying that he didn't know a problem existed since he didn't get a call. Anyone working in his type of business should know that he should not have responded on a Sunday if he has a problem with emails and should have just told me after the 1st email to call on Monday. It all could have & should have been so . instead it escalated into a full blown shouting match when I tried to explain from a customer's point of view how I felt. He did not care and had no interest in listening or diffusing the situation but got angrier and angrier. I found his behavior disturbing, bizarre and a bit scarey. After yelling at me for not calling first, never acknowledged his poor responses and attitude. Instead he yelled at me the whole time he was here and told me not to ever call again for maintenance or anything else. He told me that several times. continued blaming me for being rude and took no responsibility what so ever. Really????? WOW!!!! This guy has a seriously bad temper!!! At that point I couldn't wait to get him out of my house. As he was leaving, he was still blaming me for the issue as he stood on my front porch raising his voice again so I just shut the door in his face. It was clear he just didn't get it and probably never would so why bother and keep it all going. Apparently he does not realize that this is not appropriate behavior for a Business Owner and that will be to his own peril eventually. Bottom line, a Company show's their true colors when they have to back up their work and certainly showed me his true colors. A Company is only as good as their warranty so what is a customer to think when receiving this kind of treatment. Of course they were perfect when I was buying their system but it all changed when I presented them with a problem and that is what determines the true integrity of a Company. Who knows how will try to spin this in a response but this is how it went down. Read his other F review and take note of the difference between the customers description and 's excuse of a response. His attitude toward a customer that gave him business and previous good reviews on several media outlets is outrageous to say the least. 's paperwork shows 3 years of warranty that includes labor and extends it to 5 yrs as long as they do the maintenance for a fee twice a year for their customers. The 1st one was supposed to be free. I am guessing this is how he gets out of covering his contractual warranty obligations. Beware when you see F reviews especially when they occur within a short period of time. This did NOT have to happen and I am still wondering why it did.

Let me start by urging anyone needing a complete HVAC system replacement to use this Costco service (and ). We saved literally thousands of dollars over a bid from another local company. Plus, offers a 10 year parts AND LABOR warranty if you go through Costco.
Our install guys were ...More S., Ed K. and S. (#212151). They were extremely knowledgeable and absolutely meticulous about taking care of our home. They laid protective carpets everywhere, cleaned up every single aspect of the job and even swept out our garage (including some stuff that wasn't even related to the install). I was really impressed with the guys' technical knowledge, as they even worked with him to reprogram our existing Nest thermostats.
You will not go wrong with . The Costco referral program only improves their already great service.

It was the first heat spell of the summer and I discovered my ac was not working. cooling had a coupon for service so I gave them a call. I was so impressed with the receptionist as she was concerned and tried to work me in as quickly as possible. The technician gave me a call to let me know he was on his way and upon arriving ...More got to work. He discovered that my motor was bad and needed to be replaced so located one and finished the job quickly. As a followup 2 days later the ac stopped working so I gave them a call and the same technician returned. To my embarrassment I had failed to close the furnace door properly after changing the filter so the on switch was not engaged. (no service call charge). Then would you believe a few weeks later ac stopped working. This time a stick had gotten stuck in the fan. (no service call charge). So I am very impressed with the professionalism and responsiveness of Heating and Cooling and will definitely keep their company on my contact list .
