"
had worked on an old
chair of ours several years ago and did great work, so we called on her again to shore up the" sagging seats on a rocker and stuffed chair. Once again she did excellent work, contacted us by email when there was a question about how to proceed, and returned them promptly. The chairs look wonderful. It is a pleasure to do business with her.

"We gave him the fabric, he created the seat, stuffed it/padded it, put on our fabric, then added a tack strip to hold the fabric (he selected it, did an amazing" job). He handled it from start to finish, took less time than he estimated, did a FABulous job. If you wish to use a credit card, there is a ~3% upcharge, but he was more than willing to let us take the chair if we dropped off a check since we hadn't noticed the sign (he should specifically tell customers :) He did a great job, will use him again.

How to Hire a Professional Upholstery Cleaner

You can tackle some furniture upholstery stains yourself, but there are times when it’s best to call in a professional.

Upholstery

Upholstering is the process of covering a high-quality piece of furniture, antique or keepsake with materials such as fabric and padding. Freshen the look of a room by giving furniture a new look.

Furniture quality and sentimental value are key factors in deciding whether to invest in upholstery repairs.

If possible, always visit the upholstery shop to ensure that it's a clean environment and the work is being completed on site, says Harvey. (Photo courtesy of Bahama Upholstering)

Angie's Answers

I second the original question (still unanswered). Speaking as someone who logged in today to try to find an attorney, I see this category as one that's exactly what I have my Angie's List membership for:

1. It's important that I find a good one
2. I'm not an expert enough to know myself who is a good one
3. The industry is full of advertisements and misinformation
4. I wish I knew what experiences other people have had

?
I don't care about lawns--I planted mine in clover and don't have to mow it. When I do need to mow I use a rotary Fiskars mower, which is great--or a scythe. That's right--a scythe (the European type, which is smaller, and it's very good exercise). Gas-powered mowers, chemical fertilizers and weed killers--all nasty stuff that gets into everyone's air, soil, and water. I'm sure my neighbor doesn't like my wildflowers, semi-wild pockets of fruit bushes, and unmown areas and yes, dandelions (I have 10 acres) but that's too bad. It's better habitat for wildlife, especially the pollinators on which our food supply depends. I think this obsession with the Great American Lawn is a waste of time and resources. Plant some food instead.

?
I'm not sure Angie et. al. want you to have a complete answer to this question. By re-subscribing at the Indiana State Fair in 2012, I think I paid $20.00 per year for a multi- year subscription. Maybe even less. At the other extreme--and I hope my memory isn't faulty about this--I think the price, for my area, for ONE year was an outrageous $70.00. And they debited me automatically without warning. I had to opt out of that automatic charge. I like Angie's List, but if some of the companies they monitor behaved the way they do in this respect, they'd be on some sort of Pages of Unhappiness. I'll be interested to see if this comment gets published or censored out of existence.

That's very difficult to answer without seeing the house. As one poster said, the prep is the most important part. On newer homes that don't have a lot of peeling paint, the prep can be very minimal even as low as a couple or a few hundred dollars for the prep labor.

On a 100 year old home with 12 coats of peeling paint on it, then the prep costs can be very high and can easily exceed 50% of the job's labor cost.

A 2100 sq ft two story home could easily cost $1000 just for the labor to prep for the paint job. That number could climb too. Throw in lots of caullking  or window glazing, and you could be talking a couple or a few hundred dollars more for labor.

Painting that home with one coat of paint and a different color on the trim could run roughly $1000 or more just for labor. Add a second coat  and that could cost close to another $1000 for labor.

For paint, you may need 20 gallons of paint. You can pay from $30-$70 for a gallon of good quality exterior paint. The manufacturer of the paint should be specified in any painting contract. Otherwise, the contractor could bid at a Sherwin-Williams $60 per gallon paint and then paint the house with $35 Valspar and pocket the difference. $25 dollars per gallon times 20 gallons? That's a pretty penny too.

That was the long answer to your question. The short answer is $2000 to $4000 and up, depending upon the amount of prep, the number of coats, the amount of trim, and the paint used.

You have to put your self in the shoes of a business that is in business to turn a profit of some sort. All businesses have different overhead which in turn decides what their bottom line would be on their services. I personally would not go with an unlicensed professional for this type of install. You are messing with gas, venting issues, electrical wiring{electric water heater} and updated code issues such as a drain pan and tempature and relief drain lines for heaters that currently do not have them. I do agree that there are some companies that are way out of line for their installs but most of these companies are the really big companies that have very high overheads  I would assume. Tank type water heaters have changed over the last several years and with these safety changes come bigger prices. The price of steel thanks to China is skyrocketing and tank type water heaters are made of steel. Most wholesale plumbing supply companies cannot match what the big box stores are selling at retail to consumers. I happen to think from research that heaters such as Rheem, Bradford White and AOSmith who have been in business forever make a better product than what you can buy in the big box outlets. You also have to take in consideration the location of the water heater that is being replaced. Is it in the house, basement, garage or attic. Most 40 and 50 gallon water heaters that are purchased in a plumbing wholesale store in Texas cost between 300-340 for a 6 year warranty heater with 6 year on parts and tank. Speaking of warranty. Most big box companies will take a least 24 hours to a week to get your warranty problem taken care of. Most reputable plumbing companies will give same day service if they installed the heater.

So lets break down a typical install at cost to a licensed plumber in Texas

Heater: $315, water shut off $6.50, water flex lines or unions to code $20, gas flex line and cut off to code $12, misc fittings $15, Total $368.50 Lets add a 35% profit which is some what low  for a business $129, Total 497.50

This doesnt  include permits, pan and drain or any venting issues. The vent must go from the heater to the outside of roof using double wall vent.

Cost of permit on average $60

Most plumbing companies allow for 3 hours of time for a water heater. This includes picking the new one up. Delivering out to house. Draining and removing old water heater. Hauling off old heater. Installing new heater up to code. Going down to city and pulling permit.

Average Labor charges for heater installs $400

That would make this install run without extras on any code issues $957.50

I just had a 50 gallon gas water heater installed in my house for $1200 but I needed a pan installed. I used a licensed plumber.

Todd said it best.

An itemized list / cost breakdown, more often than not is used against the contractor when it is shared with other builders who will then beat it.

Good contractors use good people, and good people cost more.  Just the cost of having the appropriate insurance / bond can be the difference between winning a job or losing it ot a 'lower bid'.

It is the rule of three; there is Good, Cheap and Fast.  You can have any two:  Good and Cheap, won't be Fast; Good and Fast, won't be Cheap;  Cheap and Fast, won't be Good!

When comparing bids, it isn't the cheapest or the 'nicest' person you should select.   You should understand why there is a large price difference (it shows there are gaps in your design program or what you have asked for specifically, which means there may be arguments later).  If most of the bids are in line, and one is way high or way low,  you want to know why before dismissing or selecting them.

A price-only decision almost always costs more in the long run.

Good luck!

The company is a family owned business. They had an excellent phone person that answered our initial questions and scheduled one of the owners to come to our home to discuss the project. He arrived promptly as scheduled with fabric samples. He answered our questions but left the decision making as to which fabric we liked to us. He presented a quote. Labor was $900, the rest was fabric and tax. We gave a $200. deposit. The workers came a few days later and picked up the couch. They had our couch for about one month. When the couch was returned, we were not satisfied with the way the cushions looked . They were too overstuffed to suit us. There were actually a couple of issues we were not satisfied with. So following a phone call, they returned the next day and took the couch back to change what we did not like. The couch was returned within 2 days. They also at our request, made material with velcro that we can attach to the back corners of the couch to keep our cats claws from damaging. They listened to our concerns and responded as best they could. I now believe that reupholstering this type of couch is a difficult project thus expensive. I personally in retrospect would not do it again. But would shop for a replacement. I chose recovering because so many new couches are too large for our need.

Owner was very nice and personable. There was some confusion about which fabrics we chose once the chairs made it back to the shop, but the communication was good. One of the chairs apparently broke in transit and the movers that were contracted claimed they picked it up that way from our house. Owner never even bothered us to ask if this was true as it clearly was not. She brought the chairs back herself rather than use the same movers. The price seemed fair and the work was very good.

I am very pleased with the quality of
Indianapolis Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
's work. I am disappointed that it took him almost 6 months to do the work and that I to make repeated calls to check on the status. He did give me a generous discount and apologized for the long period of time he had my piece. I would suggest clarifying a timeline for completion if you are going to use him. The work is excellent.

After a bad experience with another
Indianapolis Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
company, we contacted
Indianapolis Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
about makiing new cushions for a glider we wanted to restore rather than replace.
Indianapolis Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
responded promptly by making an appointment, taking the glider to her shop, helping me to pick out an outdoor-safe fabric, and making new--and even better than original--seat and back cushions, delivering the completed project within three weeks! We're ready for summer!

We weren't able to find a time that was good for both myself and the company. When I told them I already had the materials for the upholstery, they informed me that I would need to purchase it through them instead. They were very responsive, just wasn't able to schedule a good time.

Since the piece of furniture would not fit in my car, my first question was whether they could pick up and deliver. They said no, but that that should not be a problem, since for a fee they could send someone out to measure and make a template for the cushions. Satisfied, I dragged my husband in with me a week later and we spent almost an hour with a lovely designer who estimated the amount of fabric needed, we picked out the fabric, and we paid the fee to have a measurer come out. I was contacted two days later by someone who told me to expect a call from a particular person who would come out to measure. Three weeks later we still had not heard from that person and were heading out of town for a long weekend, so I called the store and had to leave a message saying that we'd not heard anything, but that we were leaving on Thursday and returning on Monday. We returned to find that our call had been returned on the day we left, so I called again and left a message. When I still had not heard anything the following Wednesday (five weeks after our original visit, four weeks after the order had been formally placed) I went into the store, cancelled the order, and had my measurement fee graciously returned. I don't know how this got lost in the shuffle (and neither does CC.) I appreciate that the measurement fee was returned without question.

chair picked up and fabric selected. Promised to have it back to me by thanksgiving. It was delivered2 days prior. The arm to enable the foot rest to come up was not put on properly and provider said she would have her husband come after the holidays to fix it. I have not heard from her since and the arm is still not fixed.

I contacted them on Tuesday, February 3 to get an estimate on reupholstering 6 chairs. After deciding their price was more than fair and included pick up and delivery, I asked them when they could pick them up. They picked the chairs up the next day and delivered them back to me completed beautifully in TWO DAYS!!!! I was blown away! They were prompt, REALLY FAST, and their work was better than new, CAN't rave enough about this company! A+++. Other companies were as much as twice their price and were estimating 6-8 weeks to complete. I am smiling!
