Why is my window glass wavy?

Homes built before the turn of the 20th century have a very distinct characterization that many homeowners may not completely understand: a wavy appearance that can distort the images behind it.

While some people believe this waviness is simply a result of the age of the glass, it actually has to do with the techniques used to make glass at the time.

According to Old House Journal, the two most popular styles of glass during the 19th century were crown glass and cylinder glass. Each of these styles was created by involving the process of glass blowing, which largely contributed to the rippled and slumped appearance of windows in old homes.

These techniques essentially made it impossible to create a smooth, uniform look. The creation process also involved heating the glass and spinning it several times, which equally contributed to the wavy appearance.

Although techniques for glass making have improved since the 19th century, it's important to still weigh the benefits of having unique, wavy glass in your home before replacing it with more modern windows. There is a certain charm about wavy glass that gives your home an antique, historical value that many homeowners find appealing. Many buyers will appreciate the authenticity and originality of the wavy windows as contributing elements to the overall style of the home.

Although many homeowners may approve of the style of 19th-century windows, they may not be as fond of their efficacy in insulating the home. Fortunately, there are many alternative routes you can take to enjoy the best of both worlds.

One of the best ways you can enjoy better insulation in your home is by routinely maintaining the seal between the window frame and the glass. Inadequate sealing in this area can easily raise your home's heating and cooling costs much more significantly than the window itself.

Another good tip is to install curtains over the wavy glass windows in your home. Doing so helps to more effectively separate indoor air from outdoor air to improve insulation and regulates your home's temperature in a more cost-effective manner.

To get the most effective repairs or maintenance for the glass panes in your home's windows, consider hiring the services of an Indianapolis glass repair company.
