"He rigged our furnace to not work properly, which the second contractor I had to call found. The contractor told us we needed a new system, and refused to do any" repair work unless we agreed to purchase a new system, which he would install. The second contractor I called told us our system did not need to be completely replaced. When I called RWS to let them know that the contractor they sent tried to file a claim for work that didn't actually need to be done, and that he created a fire hazard in our house by rigging the system with a piece of metal, the company told me it was my word against his, and there was nothing they could do.

"This company sent a plumber who could not solve the problem. He was here 3 times and still the problem did not get resolved. He knew what the problem was and" how to solve it, but he didn't have the equipment he needed. Water backed up again and did even more damage. Had I used the provider I wanted, we would have gotten the job done correctly the first time. Our realtor, however, suggested we use the home warranty since it would cost us less. In fact, it cost us more because we had to pay the deductible on the warranty service and $800 more to another plumbing company, not to mention the cost of items damaged by water.sp The company was very responsive and got someone out here right away, however, the provider was sub-standard.

Year after year home warranty companies have topped the Angie's List most complained about category list, with nearly half of member reports in this category rating these companies unfavorably. The key to being satisfied with a home warranty is understanding how they work, what they cover and how much repairs are going to cost you.

When building a new home, the terms of the home's warranty and insurance should be perfectly clear.

Home warranties can provide you with peace of mind, but they can also be a headache if you don't do your homework. Understand your home warranty and read it through before you are in the need to use it.

Home warranties are a good option if you're buying a previously lived-in home, provided you understand what you're purchasing. Warranties aren’t designed to act as insurance to protect homeowners from loss.

Should you buy a warranty to protect you from unexpected problems with a newer home? Knowing the costs, benefits and drawbacks will help you decide if a warranty has value for a home five years old or less.

First, call your insurance company and tell them you do not want any proceeds paid to the contractor under your policy as you are not going with them.  This way they can not collect money on your behalf.  Insurance will typically have you sign a form for release of funds anyway but this is a good extra step to make sure your signature isn't forged.  Second, call the contractor and tell them you will not be needing their services afterall.  Did your husband pay a deposit?  If so it may be non-refundable.  Then follow up with a certified letter. 


An email as well doesn't hurt but some states don't yet recognize email as a form of communication for legally binding documentation.  This may have changed and I'm sure more states do recognize them as I haven't followed that topic elsewhere as much as I used to.  The contractor's office should be local.  A sure fire way to ensure they got the message is to deliver the letter to the office of the contractor and have someone at the office sign a duplicate stating it has been recieved and read.  There's no arguing whether they received it or not by doing that.


Hopefully you've learned your lesson about high pressure sales techniques and storm chasers looking for a quick buck.  Some people find out a much harder way.  While these guys may be legitimate you should always do your homework on a contractor before signing the contract.  Unless you have water running out of the house and the work has to be done on the spot it's not so much of an emergency that it can't wait until the next day.

Consider going to library an reading Consumer Reports rating on home insurance companies in your area.  For affordabilty elect the highest deductable you can stomach.  This will lower your premioum, I went thru Costco, they and Sam's Club can be a valuable resource for home and car insurance. Shop on line with your needs to save money.  Unless you have major assets forget large policy. For your gutter and roofing needs see my blog.

Unfortunately, I cannot remember the exact date of service. However, I had a great experience with CP. I thought my furnace had gave out on me. Before calling CP, I had at least 5 company come in to give me a quote. They all said it needed to be replaced. The last company that came out noticed that a wire was disconnected. Hmmm... Who might have done ...More that? Well, after he connected it, the next day the furnace started working again. Well, it stopped once again. I called CP to have them send a technician. They quickly provided me with two different companies to choose from. I tried one of them but never received a phone call back. I then called the second and they immediately offered me date of service that worked best for my schedule. The quality of service received from that company was A+. The tech needed some assistance from CP to verify authorization, check on coverage of a part, and other information. I over heard the person from CP asking the tech if he had checked a particular area of the furnace and he had not. This actually helped me saved thousands of dollars. Needless to say, my furnace is working.

Terrible. They do NOT care about their customers. They have no morals or values. All they care about is profit. I was placed on hold several times, disconnected at least once and they did not call back. Their customer service and midlevel supervisors had no idea about home maintenance, just arguing contracts.

The HSA warranty was purchased for us by the seller of our home, we had only been in the home since June 9th when we filed our first claim. On Wednesday 13th at around 4pm I used their online claim service to report our broken air conditioner, it was one of the hottest days of the year. It automatically assigned us an HVAC ...More company and said we should expect a call within 2 hours and if not we should call the company. It also said that if it was near the end of the work day we may not receive a call until the next morning. The guy from the company called us at around 8:30pm. He said he had just checked his voicemail and apologized for not returning the call sooner. He said he could come the next day if someone would be home to let him in the house. He came the next day (he was not just on time, but actually early!) and fixed the problem - we just needed a freon fill-up. He also cleaned out the air conditioner for us. We paid him the $75 visit fee that is standard for an HSA visit. A week later I received an email from HSA which says that our claim for the air conditioner repair is approved and we do not have to pay anything on top of the $75 we already paid.

We could not be happier with the home warranty! Every step of the process was easy and the contractor they chose was great.

We paid $475 for a "premium" home warranty policy. Our basement lift station failed. No one returned our call that evening, so we called our own plumber to find out if we could use water/sewer or had to check into a hotel.
I was told when I called the next morning that I should have called back in an hour, their voice mail wasn't ...More dependable. Hello, ever hear of an answering service? In this field, customers should not have to keep calling back. They also implied that they didn't get my message, which is untrue, as their plumber did call me the *next morning*!! (Way too late).
I was told that the lift station was not covered, which is a blatent misrepresentation of what is covered in their "premium" policy.
I will be asking for a refund of my remaining money. we've barely been in the house for a month!

In the fall of 1999, we bought the home. At the time, we were advised to buy insurance for the furnace and air conditioner. We choice American Shield because they were reccommend to us. We used them for 8 years renewing every December at a total cost of $3,669.00. We have had over 19 service call reports 10 of which came from one company. After the ...More visit by this company on 8/3/2007 they refuse to replace the AC unit because they stated that it was a bad compressor caused by our poor maintenance. We would have to replace the AC. This was the third compressor that was installed so it was not the first time it had happened. They decided this without consulting my husband or myself. No one asked us any question and since the company sent in this report they refuse to take our claim for the replacement.

I went to the website and entered my claim. After waiting a week with no response, I called the 800 number and was told that there were "glitches" in the computer program. I was advised that there was a $75 deductible per claim. Since I had only one sheet of paper regarding the warranty, I asked for a more complete explanation of my warranty ...More with warranty conditions and details of what was covered and what was not (this information is not available on their website which is more focused on selling the product). I was told that this was not available and that claims associates would interpret claims. So I asked that a contractor be sent to inspect the A/C. After a week with no response, we called a local contractor and had the unit repaired at our own expense. I called the home warranty company back to cancel that request and to make a claim on the disposal. I waited another eight days without response. I called back and asked for a supervisor and stated my concerns with the company's poor response pattern. She briefly apologized, then told me that the claim had been dispatched but that plumbers get busy with bigger jobs and work smaller claims in when they can. She reminded me again that I would be responsible for the $75 service call and that if my unit needed replacement, the warranty company would allow approximately $75 for replacement with a contractors' grade 1/3 HP disposal. I suggested that I had a mid-grade 1/2 HP unit and asked why it would not be replaced by a comparable unit. She said that this was possible but that I would be responsible for the difference in cost since I did not have one of their premium plans. To their credit the local plumber did contact me the next day. But replacement with a comparable unit, if replacement was approved by the warranty company, would cost me nearly $300.00. My complaint is regarding the poor response to claims (I was put on silent hold every time I called), poor response time by contractors (especially since the call-back would have been only to set up an appointment which presumably would involve even more time), and potentially misleading marketing information since exact warranty coverage details are not provided. This company's mailing address is only a post office box. I feel that this product is sold to real estate seller's and thus to potential buyers as an incentive to buy a property while offering questionable protection down the road when a claim is made.

In the first year (last summer), the A/C broke and they sent a service man to fix it. This man was very rude and refused to work on the system. This summer, it broke again, first paired me with a company that had was no longer in business. I had to do the leg work to get a new appt with another contractor. We made an appt and ...More on the day of the appt, I called to verify with him. He was surprised to find that hadn't called me when he canceled all work with them. He stated that this had happened to him a few other times that week. I finally convinced to allow me to use my own regular HVAC maintenance man. He called them to report that my AC unit was un-serviceable. Previous owners hadn't performed regular maintenance and the valves were rusted shut. approved the replacement of the unit. However, they would only replace it with a 13SEER unit. They would only pay $400 in labor and they would not replace any connections, ground pads, refrigerant, or disposal. I don't know how the unit is supposed to work without refrigerant... In addition, they wouldn't have replaced the indoor coil. When the new unit is matched with one of a lower SEER, you don't get the new amount, you get somewhere in between. In essence, they are liars, cheats, and weasels. I do not recommend them for any reason.

After Christmas our furnace went out. We called Globe and they told us to leave a message on their emergency line. They told us that someone would call us right back. We did, and no one ever called us back. We called them back and told them that we were going to go ahead and get the work done and mail in the claim. They told us they had received the ...More claim and that we would soon receive our check. When we didn't receive it, we called back and they told us that the check was on the way. When it still didn't arrive, we called back and they told us that our claim was illegible and that they hadn't processed it. We then faxed another copy and they still said it was illegible. Their customer service has always been poor, and they are rude on the phone.
