Indianapolis fitness pro offers tips on keeping treadmill rolling

If you have a broken piece of fitness equipment that's turned into a coat rack, consider a repair service — but only if the machine costs more than the repair, says Chris Muylle, owner of Fitness Fixx in Fishers.

Treadmills and elliptical machines commonly need repairs. "The parts that wear, like the bearings, belts and other movable parts, need to be repaired most often," Muylle says.

Repair costs vary, so call to receive a free estimate. For example, your treadmill can be serviced for as little as $90, not including the price of parts.

To reduce the need for repairs, make sure to clean and properly lubricate your machines. "You should have [them] maintained on a regular basis," Muylle says.

"Regular maintenance will not only minimize the amount of repairs needed, but also maximize the life of your product. You wouldn't purchase a nice car and never get the oil changed."
