Indiana offers incentives to buy energy efficient appliances

Indiana has received more than $6 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The program is designed to help residents replace old, inefficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment with new Energy Star qualified units.

The state's mail-in rebate program began in February, and will continue until funds run out. Rebate funds are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Eligible products include: furnaces, boilers, central air conditioners, air source heat pumps and geothermal heat pumps. Only purchases made after Feb. 1 are eligible for the rebate.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of Indiana.
  • Qualified equipment must be installed in applicant's single-family, owner-occupied residence. Commercial and rental units are not eligible.
  • Rebates are for replacement equipment only, and qualified equipment must be new.
  • The installing contractor must be a contractor whose business is located in Indiana.
  • The application, rebate form and invoice(s) must be postmarked within 30 days of the product purchase or installation. The paid invoice or sales receipt must indicate the installer received full payment.
  • Invoice must show the manufacturer and model number of the unit(s) installed. If you are installing your own unit, you must provide a copy of the receipt for the purchase of the equipment and it must show the manufacturer and model number of the unit installed.

To apply, contact the Indiana Office of Energy Development at inenergyefficiency.com or call 800-573-3503.

Consumers may also receive a 30 percent federal tax credit for the same Energy Star product. The tax credit is subject to limitations that vary by product and type of home.

For a full list of qualified products and specific terms, go to energystar.gov/taxcredits. Consumers may also be able to combine the state rebate with a local utility rebate, but eligibility should be verified with both organizations.
