"They showed up as promised. The installation took about 1 day. They returned to make some minor modifications and adjustments at a later date as agreed. System is functioning perfectly."

What is a fair price for R-22?

By 2015, there will be a 90 percent reduction in the production of R-22. By 2020, it will no longer be produced at all. Because production is limited, costs to charge existing units that are leaking R-22 refrigerant have gone up and are only expected to rise. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member John R. of Lake Mary, Fla.)

Dear Angie: My air conditioning contractor just charged me $100 per pound for R-22 refrigerant. This is a lot more than I paid four years ago. Is this a fair price these days?

How much does it cost to install a new furnace?

Two warranties govern furnace installs. The first is the manufacturer's warranty, which comes with the furnace and protects against defects in the furnace itself. A contractor's warranty covers the labor involved to make repairs if the furnace doesn't work properly. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Wayne L. of St. Louis)

Are you thinking about installing a new furnace? The following price considerations can help you determine the best furnace for your home, and save money too.

Which furnace filters provide the best indoor air quality?

Replacing the air filter will improve air quality and extend the life of a furnace.

Be sure to check the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating when evaluating air filters. You'll also want to learn about the types of filters and what products improve your home’s indoor air quality.

"Technician arrived a little ahead of schedule. He was clean-cut, courteous, professional and explained each part of the tune-up service. When finished he told me the result of the inspection. He wrote the invoice which listed in detail the inspection(s) performed and accepted without question the $39.95 coupon for first service. I will call them for the next furnace tune-up."

was a consummate professional and took time to tear out the blower and clean excessive build-up of dust/dirt. He explained previous home owner failed to use required air filters. I am very pleased of how conscientious he was and he did not charge extra. He showed me the blower and it was excessively dirty and disgusting. Now I will be interested to see how my unit works this season. Thanks for a job well done!!"

"Workers arrived on time at 8am and had the new unit installed and fully operational by 2:30pm. During installation, the sales/project manager stopped by just to make sure everything was going well. I tipped the installers and they did my winter service for free. Now that is a

situation. They take their shoes off whenever they come in the house and they clean up any mess from the job. These guys may not be the cheapest out there, but I think you sometimes get what you pay for and I am pleased to pay for high quality service and peace of mind."

"Responded quickly during peak season. Was given estimate and truthful advice on which unit was best for us. Another company only gave us an estimate on the upgraded model and didn't even tell us that there was a lower priced model without the part on top that helped keep leaves out of unit (we have no trees!) The installers came out as scheduled and got to work quickly. They put sheets down on carpet and cleaned up all of their messes before they left. The job took about 5 hours and the guys did a great job. Paperwork for federal rebate was provided and rebate from

Energy was processed through their office. Overall we had a very good experience with this company. I would highly recommend them.

's is the best! my report of 2008 tells the story on them. I was so glad that I had found them in 2008 before I needed my downstairs unit replaced. Someone I could trust was just a phone call away. They put in a new unit and I never have problems with it.. My experience when I had our upstairs unit replaced several years ago was a nightmare and it was such a relief to know that I would be able to depend on

"The tech came out and told me that both systems had coil leaks, and the systems were so old (30 years) that they would probably have to be replaced. I asked him to provide me an estimate, and he called a sales rep to come out immediately. I was satisfied with their promptness and diagnosing of my systems. The sales rep came out, looked at my systems, and then gave me a quote for 2 systems, one a 13 SEER and one a 15 SEER, which came to about $14,000.00. I have a home warranty, so I asked them to provide this information to the warranty company (gave them the phone number and reference numbers) and they said they'd take care of it. That was on Monday. On Wednesday, I called the warranty company to find out the status of my claim, and they had not yet been contacted by the tech! I called

, and they got the tech to contact the warranty company that day. The sales rep did not send them the quote to replace the systems until Thursday. On Thursday, I learned that they did not break down the estimate into line items (like cost of the units, labor, tax, permits, etc) which the warranty company needs to determine covered vs non-covered costs. The sales rep never got back to them with this break down, and I was frustrated with their reluctance to communicate with my warranty company, so I moved on to another contractor. When we were having a heat wave, and I have 2 young children in the house, getting my A/C back on was being delayed because they couldn't make a phone call. I paid them $160.00 to look at my systems - not one bit of corrective work was performed. When I later got a second quote from another contractor to replace both systems, his estimate came to $4,000.00 less than

"On a routine maintenance check of the furnace and a/c, a technician told me that the furnace needed immediate replacement, at an estimated cost of $3,500. The unit had not shown any problems. He said he could patch it up temporarily, but that the furnace would quit momentarily. I okayed "temporary" repairs that cost around $700. I always get multiple quotes for large items such as this. Two other companies looked at the unit and said it was fine. If I did want a new unit, their estimates for ones of similar size were closer to $2,500 than $3,500. When I called
Greensboro HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
's again to ask for another look, they didn't show for the first two scheduled visits. On the third attempt, they sent the same technician. This time he admitted that the unit wasn't in as bad a shape as he thought previously, but he said I still needed a new one. I called the manager, whose response was, "No one has ever complained about this technician before." I told the manager I was ending my service contract and would not be using
Greensboro HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
's again. However, in a few months I began receiving reminder notices for seasonal maintenance. I ignored the notices until they began threatening legal action to recover money due (for services that had not been requested or performed). I had to write another explanation and ask to be taken off the mailing list. Yesterday, about 2 years after the last contact, I received another preventative maintenance reminder. I'm using it as a reminder to post about this experience in Angie's List. Maybe when the managers read this report, they'll take my name off the mailing list. And the original furnace? Still going strong.

"We asked for a specific day to start installation and they accommodated us. They arrived as scheduled and did a great job. They ran into a problem with the way the old gas system had been installed and it probably took them two hours longer to take it out than it might have. They took the extra time so as not to mess up anything and there were no extra charges. It caused them to have to make some new duct connections, etc. but they did that with no hassle. We have had cold and warm days since the installation and have been able to use both heating and air conditioning and the

damper system that they proposed works great to balance the upstairs and downstairs depending on which system is being used and it is easy for me to adjust. The
