small bathroom off our master suite in a 1956 ranch style house.
Also we was going to fix the leak in the shower.
installed the fan and hooked up the fan /light to the same switch as
the vanity light. He presented me with a bill for $340. But in the
middle of the night if you turned on the light, you got blasted with a
bright light from the shower stall and a fan since he had put it on the
same switch as the vanity light. We asked that he put it on a separate
switch ( which in my sense is normal .... a separate switch for a fan ) .
He did this. But the new switch he installed in the wall in an odd
way. It was sticking out from the wall about 1/4 inch and their was
calking around it that was already separating from the wall.
found this odd so before he came the next day to pick up a check we went
into the attic to see what he had done and read the instructions for installation for the fan. We found he had not vented the
fan to the outside.. but just into the attic. The instruction in the box
for the fan clearly said the fan MUST be vented outside usually through
a soffit if possible and that the fan/light Must be on a GFI protected
-The fan/light was NOT on a GFI protected circuit
-The fan/light was NOT vented outside
-The shower still leaked.
- The switch was not installed flush with the wall and was already separating from the wall.
The wiring wss a bit odd. It was now attached to another circuit that controlled the fan in the attik . So if that switch was off.. the fan in the bathroom would not work and ...most people would not have a clue why.
We have lots of extra circuits. There is no reason he coudl not just use one of those. I am not sure. I am not an elecrician so I don't know the best way.
I asked why the switch was installed like that and he said there are
tabs on the box that made it impossible to install flush with the wall. . I asked a carpenter of 35 years
about that and he said - "Yes, I know those tabs. you break them off
and install the fixture flush with the wall. " I asked him if he was
"finished the job. He said "yes.. is there a problem". I said... the fan is not vented outside. He said "oh.. i was going to get a part for that". But the fact is he had already 2 days ealier presented me with a bill and it is just by
We cannot use the shower since we believe it is not
safe. We now need to call a plumber for the leak in the shower and an
electrician to install the fan/light fixture properly and safely.
We feel this person does not try to do things properly. Either he doesn't know or doesn't care. It is not clear to me which. Though he could simply have read the instuctions on the box.
I felt bad that I changed the paint color mid-job, but
