"They took a little time to get to me, but the service was worth the wait. Clean up as expected. price was fair, and they did a good job in one afternoon."

"The contractor showed up unannounced after I requested in writing a 24 hr notice. The man in charge informed my wife that it would cost more than the quote since the tree had two main trunks. I had to leave work to showed him the quote, that they submitted to me. It stated the whole tree was to be removed. After gripping about it his crew removed the tree and several plant in my landscaping as well, with there boots. I left to go back to work and when I returned home found several slabs of my driveway had been broken. I informed

and received no phone calls back, and after several days of calling them was informed that it was not there concern, and that there contract stated that they are not responsible for broken concrete. I informed them that I would like them to pay half for the repairs. I thought this was fair and the responsible thing to do, for any contractor. I have never heard back from them again.

Large trees like Douglas firs provide wonderful benefits for your yard, but the bigger they are, the harder they fall. A Seattle-area contractor offers tips to make sure your trees are healthy and not prone to falling over.

Lessons from the Bradford pear trees

Planted extensively in the ’80s and ’90s, the Bradford pear tree became a dominant feature in many subdivisions, on commercial properties and in parking lots. All was well until 15 or more years after planting.

How to plant a tree

'"Right Tree, Right Place’ should take into account the mature size of the tree, not the size you want it to be, as well as ensuring the soil, water, sunlight and climate factors are all favorable for the tree species you are planting,” says Wes Kocher of the ISA. (All photos by Mike LaFollette)

Planting a tree is an easy job, but it takes more skill than you might think. The following tree-planting tips can help ensure you plant a tree that thrives.

3 common tree diseases

Trees add both beauty and value to your property, but like all good things, they also have a downside. Diseases and other conditions can quickly turn a living, vibrant tree into a pile of dead wood.

"I called several services. They were the least expensive. The equipment did break, and it took 3 weeks for them to grind the tree stump. The owner failed to tell me the equipment was broken, he kept saying the next day. The men were nice, but I feel they weren't trained very well. They broke my and my neighbor's fence. It has been over a month, and they have not fixed the fence. He keeps saying he has the parts, but it has yet to be fixed. He will not repair my neighbor's fence. He had no problems

my check. He says they always collect in full.

"We have used H.A. Irish (not to be confused with Irish AAA) at least 6 times over about 12 years. Though we have gotten other estimates H.A. Irish always come in cheaper. That doesn't mean less service though, they always do a very good and knowledgeable job and clean up thoroughly after themselves. They stick with their estimate, too. "

"They were excellent. They took care of all the wood free of charge at my mother's home. They did great work, they cleaned up after themselves and were very professional. They went above and beyond and actually sweeped up the street to make sure there weren't any wood chips on the street as well. I would highly recommend."

"Called Arboscape Tree Service after seeing the phone book advertisement.

came out within hours to look at the massive willow tree that was on my vehicle, boat, and garage. He offered to contact the insurance company and to work directly with them (which meant coordinating three policies/claims and two different insurance companies). He wrote up a detailed estimate for the work and submitted it to the home owner's insurance company and had it approved by the insurance company supervisor before the appraiser even came out. The work included tree removal from the van, boat, garage and complete clean-up. Also, a tree limb on a backyard fence and a tree limb overhanging another fence (very bad storm). The next day,

showed up with a large truck with a wood chipper attached and four guys to cut limbs and remove the tree. They worked quickly and efficiently to clean up the tree, including bringing in a crane to haul out the 8' in diameter double tree trunks.

"They were quick and did a great job, even with the stump that had grown its roots into a brick sidewalk, and we thought their price was really reasonable. They came on time and didn't trample our yard more than they could help. We hired them again to treat our ash trees at our new house, and are planning to call them again in the fall to trim the trees there."

"Exceeded my expectations, I have watched other tree services perform work for friends, it is fascinating.

has no cranes or lifts, he climbs the trees and cuts them down. My five trees were over 45 years old, I counted the rings and over 80 feet tall. The main work was complete on day one and they showed up at 8 am the next day to chip the big pile and finish cleaning up. My lawn gets sun and they left the area clean and fresh. I would highly recommend this service."

"I thought they did a good job. There were 2 people doing the work and it took them about 5 hours. I thought it was a little pricey, but well worth it. I did call other companies and they were all around the same price. They did haul off all of the branches and stumps from my property."

"They were very busy this summer so the scheduling of the arborist and the workers was messy. The receptionist in the office was very apologetic and remembered us from the first time that we called wondering if an appointment was going to be set because we hadn't heard back. She got right on the phone with the workers and set an appointment right then, so that we were taken care of. In spite of that, I would still use their services again, because I believe the price was fair, they were honest and they did the job well."
