"One of the previously decommissioned chimneys on our historic house deteriorated and developed a large hole above the 3rd floor ceiling and began tilting. Concerned" that the 6' above the roof might topple through our new and very expensive roof, I called a number of contractors.
was the second of two that came out and first to quote. Although the 6' of the chimney above the roof had previously been replaced both contractors proposed removing the chimney to below the hole and rebuilding a false chimney only for appearance sake.
called November 5th in the early afternoon to say he was on the way to look at the job and if we wanted him to do the work he could start by stabilizing the chimney on the 6th. When he called back with a quote of $5,600. I had not received the 2nd quote and it sounded reasonable so I told him I would accept his offer. He said it would take about 4 days to complete. I further told him we need a certificate of insurance from their insurance agent before workers showed up to work. At this time he reneged on the start date of the 6th, but said they could start on the 7th between 9am & 1pm with the stabilization and demolition. We are closed on Fridays so I arranged for someone to be there to open for them.
arrived with a laborer, collected the requested $2,800.00 deposit but provided no contract and did not have the requested certificate of insurance. He was reminded that we wanted a good quality job done.
did no stabilization and to the contrary removed three walls of the chimney from the roof line down past the hole to the third floor leaving only the roof boards holding up the six feet of chimney above the roof and without authorization. When I saw what was done that night I called and spoke to
who said we wanted it done right and that was the right way to do it. He went on to say it was now a $10,000.00 job. After much negotiation he agreed to do the new job for $6,900.00 on the 11th and it would take 8 more days. Work proceeded very slowly. workers didn't show up every day and typically didn't start until 10a - 12p or later. After several weeks less than half of the chimney was complete, in the first 4' it was 2" out of plumb, there was a nearly 1" belly in one side and the horizontal mortar joints varied from 5/8" on some to 1" on others. I met with
when he came in that day telling him I didn't have confidence that he could properly finish the job and asked him to leave. During the project to date, never did the owner or a supervisor show up to check on the job. I later learned this was
's first job with the company. When they finally provided the certificate of insurance it had no workers comp insurance. The owner said employees are sub contractors and he does not carry comp on them (leaving the customer exposed to liability if a worker gets injured). His own advertisements state the business is "fully insured". When he was asked if he had pulled a permit he said a permit is not required for this work. This has not been verified by the
Building Dept. as they are very difficult to contact. Their advertisements again state that they are licensed. When asked the owner said he is licensed as an
(this is not a license but rather a registration). My opinion of this business is: that the owner knows little about business, supervision, screening contractors or the state insurance and licensing regulations. Our job was finally completed by

and a laborer started late in the morning and did not work every day we were open. Planning and communication left much to be desired. The final product appears to be of acceptable quality although mortar joints & tooling of them is not consistent with the adjacent chimney as we had specified. Kevins work was totally removed. It took
Until January 27th to finish the job. We had a very mild Fall & start of winter & the project could have easily been finished before the temperatures dipped below freezing. Everyone in this company is full of instant excuses for any problems that arise. They may be good at cleaning chimneys but would never recommend them for any brick work. I would also be very careful of them installing new gas equipment unless you see a license for that type of work and a permit for the work.

"Not good in the beginning. However, we they turned on their vacuum it blew dirt and dust from previous jobs into us into our living. room causing quite a mess ." They did apologize it offered us a discount on future jobs. When I called them back to service other areas in the house or have someone to call that they would handle the job that we need it done however it is November and I've not heard back from them since.

The Angie's List Guide to Winter Maintenance

It's the time of year when the winter weather can take a toll. Follow this winter maintenance checklist to protect your home, your car and your health.

gas fireplace with fire burning

Dear Angie: How much can I expect to pay to have my wood fireplace converted to gas? Our house is about 30 years old. The bottom of the fireplace looks like it's easily accessed through the basement. The conversion would involve running 30 to 50 feet of gas line. — Thomas M., Cincinnati, Ohio

Chimney Sweeping reviews in Detroit

The two gentlemen were punctual, polite, and very professional. I have added them onto my contacts list and will gladly recommend them to anyone who needs their services.
- Sandra W.

Service was excellent. Provider arrived on time and was very respectful of my home - always remembering to cover his shoes before entering. We discussed my concerns and did an extensive evaluation after which we determined what needed to be done, when each task would be undertaken and at what cost. Explanations were clear and concise. He and his assistant cleaned up the area, replaced the

and fireplace area before leaving. Both were polite and efficient.

Further discussion ensued as to when to perform the remaining job - purchase and insertion of a new liner. The estimate provided was right on target, no changes were made after the work was begun.

This company has demonstrated the best work ethic and a level of professionalism that I have not seen in a very long time. I would happily recommend them to anyone who needs chimney cleaning/service or other related work done in/on their home.

Although this review is an A, there are a couple of issues I had with provider during this service. Provider didn't quite do everything that was explained in the discussions about the additional services that were purchased. Also, the chimney cap, that was purchased from and installed by provider, isn't as easy to open and close as represented. That being said, the provider was prompt, very professional, very neat, and very courteous.
Originally, the provider was called in order to have chimney swept and inspected; also, the chute's reservoir was to be cleaned. Provider suggested the installation of a chimney cap and a new fireplace chute cover. The prices that were quoted I understood to include the removal of the all the old fireplace hardware. All of the services discussed were performed. Provider was paid, then he left.
After that, I discovered that the old fireplace hardware was still in place. I contacted provider who stated that he would have had to "grind" out all of the old hardware and was still willing to do come back and do that. I elected to just leave things as they were.
The new chimney cap is closed by firmly pulling a beaded chain in the fireplace straight down and then snapping the chain into a notch located on the side of the fireplace. This is not as easy as the provider made it sound. Opening and closing the cap was done easily by the provider, a young man. I think anyone that has an issue with their arm, or back, will find it very difficult to open/close this cap. Senior citizens probably won't be able to open and close this cap. As it is, I leave the cap open for entire weekends because of the difficulty of using the chain to open/close it. The fireplace is mostly used on the weekend.
While I am not crazy about the chimney cap operation and I wish provider had communicated better what was going to happen (or not happen) with the fireplace hardware, I still strongly recommend

I called the provider the following day to find out why they did not show up. The person who answered the phone said that she was aware that they did not show up. She said that the weather did not permit the gutters to be cleaned on that day .(The weather was okay.) I asked why they did not call to inform me about not coming. She could not give me an answer.

was just absolutely great. He showed up slightly early, assessed the situation, prepped the area, and got to work almost immediately. He took the time to show me all the places where he needed to make repairs, and in every case he explained how each repair would help us have fires safely. He was very responsive to questions, very interested in preserving the original craftsmanship of our home, and friendly and funny as well. I'd recommend him to anyone.
- Tom S.

It was great. He came, he swept, he taught, he left. He offered to install chimney caps, but it was a bit out of the budget at the time.
I highly recommend the gentlemen. Keep him working for as long as he's able to do it!
- Hubert S.

I called many chimney sweeps off Angie's List. His was the only company to return my call right away. I spoke to his wife who set up the appointment and informed me of the price. She was very knowledgeable and very personable. After speaking to so many other contractors that was extremely refreshing.
Detroit Chimney Sweeps Provider Name Locked
arrived slightly before his appointment and even called me when he was on the way. Once he arrived at the home he called me again. I had him see one of my contractors because I was at work at the time. He completed the job and cleaned after. I am extremely pleased with the job and his company response to my request. I will most definitely call them again.
