"We first used for a small project, and were very happy with the attention to detail, professionalism, and honesty, so we hired them to do" a bathroom remodel. helped with material selection and also with suggestions of ways to do things differently than what we were thinking - he definitely had a better 'vision' of our bathroom than we did. There were many time were he had a suggestion that we were extremely happy that we went with what he suggested, rather than what we had originally thought would be a good idea. and his guys (his was the plumber and was his apprentice) are extremely polite, respectful, and friendly. I felt completely comfortable leaving them in my house with my wife and daughter all day when I was at work. They worked hard and didn't cut any corners. We came across unforseen plumbing issues, and they were upfront about the cost of the fixes and why things needed to be done. We were extremely happy with the end result. We thought the price was high when quoted it, but after seeing how much time they put into it and everything they had to do, we thought the price was reasonable.

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

?

You gave a good description, but without seeing some photos and maybe even the space itself it would still just be a guess.

A few years ago we replaced a significant load bearing beam to raise it up a foot in the new kitchen.  It was nearly 17' long with a new LVL beam.  For us this was pretty reasonable.  The LVL was about $250.  And maybe 12-15 2x6s, to temporarily support the ceiling joists, were probably like another $75.  The labor was $800.  There was also some finish work done afterward, but that was worked into a much bigger job for the entire floor.

Technically speaking, it is likely that you need to have something spec'd out by an engineer or architect, to calculate load, etc.  I don't know your area but in most places "a mere contractor, GC, or carpenter" is probably not allowed to just rip out a load-bearing wall without someone who is qualified to do the load calculations (which will be VERY conservative.  A brand new LVL will be VASTLY stronger than it really needs to be, but it won't be expensive.  The typical contractor will be like "hey we'll sister up two 2x12s", and not really know if that'll do the trick or not.  I'm not saying that all guys are like that, but ... it is what it is.

What you are talking about is probably at least a bit more involved and I'd love to give a good estimate but it's hard to say without a better understanding of the space.

You may be looking at $1500 - $3500?  It depends on too many specifics that we just can't know without a bunch of photos, and maybe even opening up a wall or ceiling to see exactly how temporary supports could be installed, and where the permanent beam/header could be placed and properly supported.  Your span isn't all that big so if at all possible I would do it without columns - it'll be much nicer.

If I were you I would first have a quick consultation with a "professional engineer".  They are qualified to calculate load etc - and cost a lot less than a full architect.  In my experience, an engineer just wants to provide a quick, proper solution without a lot of extra BS.  My experience with architects has been less than favorable.  Too much drama and expense and he actually spec'd things wrong and my carpenter had to pick up on it.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  Good luck!!!

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

The above listing of work does not come even close to adequately describing the work that of performed while working on the remodel of our kitchen. was meticulous, dependable, trustworthy, honest, good communicator ... and affable even in trying circumstances. He demanded excellence ...More from himself, never accepting anything less (redoing work more than once at no additional cost), and was always able to come up with great solutions to the problems and challenges presented by our older house.
He started by helping with final design selection of the cabinets (from Home Depot -- and we rightly chose to get our own installer rather than depend on HD to provide). In this process, he gave us a couple of tips on the design that really helped out and gave our kitchen a custom design look/feel. Plus, his knowledge of remodeling and kitchen cabinets was crucial in getting our parts order right with Home Depot.
With the demolition, we knew there would be problems due to age of house. carefully worked through all of those issues as we redid electrical wiring and new lighting for the kitchen (can lights in ceiling, undercounter lights for cabinets, etc.). He was meticulous in assuring walls were built back to square with durawall, plaster and feathering in preparation for new cabinets. Once installed, he received compliments from the countertop installer regarding leveling across all lower cabinets. And during installation of the upper cabinets, he identified cabinet production flaws that we took back to HD to remedy. (I doubt a HD installer would have spotted, or would have tried to finagle if pointed out.) He interfaced his work with other contractors easily (including electrical, marble countertop, tile backsplash, wood floor refinishing, etc.), almost acting as a general contractor in terms of coordinating work flow and scheduling.
During all this work, there were several difficult situations that arose which handled with upmost professionalism. His knowledge of the building crafts and associated trades came into play repeatedly. He did plumbing, electrical work, rough-in carpentry, detailed finish work. He made numerous trips into the attic, crawled into cramped spaces under sinks, figured out the many puzzles presented by our house. Lastly, because of the care of his workmanship and his work ethic, we had work on other projects around our house -- crown molding installed the master bedroom, new utility sink installed in basement, new bathroom sink and countertop.
was also patient with me as I occasionally helped with some of the grunt work. He's a capable teacher as well, sharing tips on painting, drywall work, plumbing, etc. Although my efforts to "lend a hand" may not have saved a lot of money, it did keep me aware of all the work, toil, effort and thought that was putting into this project.
The outcome? Superb! We have a beautiful new kitchen, thanks to 's detailed craftsmanship. I recommend him with absolutely no reservations.

My experience with was great! (the owner) was very fast to answer and respond to my phone calls. I got an estimate just a few days after he came by and saw my old kitchen. His ideas were great and really got me excited to get the project going. As soon as i signed the contract, he sent me to his design ...More center where i picked out the tile floors, granite for the counters, and tile for the back splash. After a day of guys coming to measure for granite, tile, appliances etc. work was underway. I was worried about being inconvenienced by the mess and not having a kitchen for some time, but and his crew were very clean, prompt and did not waste anytime. They worked well around my busy family and dogs, and aside from the occasional bang, were almost unnoticeable. The installment payments were very manageable (3 payments, 1 upon start, 2 after cabinets were hung, and the third when my kitchen was done and I was happy. was around for the entire project making sure everyone including me and my family knew what was going on and when things would be getting done. At the end of each day cleaned up the mess from that day, as well as gave me progress reports. The quality of the work is amazing, and it is hard to believe that it is already done, and was so reasonably priced!!!

Just ok. We wanted to talk design as in aesthetics, and he was all about the floor plan. He seemed to think very inside the box. What he proposed was very basic, and thus things we had already thought of. We were hoping someone who came to help design a master bathroom would come up with some more interesting ideas.

and were fantastic!!! We would definitely hire them again. , the carpenter, was awesome- a great communicator with exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship. , the tile-guy, also did a phenomenal job. We love our new mantle and fireplace, and ...More have received many compliments.
When problems or challenges to implementing our vision for the fireplace/mantle arose, these guys were great in helping us figure out solutions. They were on time and efficient. I can't rave enough about them, and recommend them enthusiastically!

All I can say is buyer beware. We used them to renovate our Condo and to say we were disappointed in them is a serious
understatement. I chose them, so I must own that mistake.
They were months late. We had repeated problems getting straight answers. The individual in charge of the project was horrendously unorganized. One, comical ...More example: they started installing our bathroom tile in our hall/kitchen because the project manager did not pay attention to written instructions. All that work was ripped out and re-done. Tile work in one bathroom and in the kitchen still have some problems.
Material selections had to be changed because they did not order items on a timely basis even though the items had been selected sometimes months in advance (e.g., doors).
Other problems just arose from a lack of thought--like they installed the new doors that had nickel door handles but left in the old brass hinges and latch plates.
Sadly we even had problems with their core HVAC and plumbing services. For instance, they installed a thermostat that people who came in later said was wrong. Then we discovered that they failed to reconnect the house humidifier (the copper line was just hanging unconnected) so we are having someone else reconnect it. Finally, we discovered that (or at least it appears through the hole in my wall that) the water pipe leading to the old wet bar was completely removed; yet apparently they gave no thought to how we would connect to the ice maker/water dispenser in the refrigerator which was right next to the old wet bar.
No single item was critical and in the end we have a home we really like, but we went through a lot of unnecessary grief in the process and there is no way we will work with these people again.

did all work as stated in the "big deal" which included a floorplan of the proposed new bathroom. I found the owner to be extremely knowledgeable as well as approachable. I received the plan the next day and the owner even stated we could call him with any questions (which he did not have to do since he would not get ...More paid for such).

I contracted with in August to tear out the original shower and install a new shower enclosure in my in-law's 60 year old home. The work was to start in September, but due to other committments we both had, we postponed it until October 15th.
and arrived at the scheduled ...More time and we reviewed the work to be done once more. They went to work tearing out the old shower stall down to the concrete wall and inside studs. They hauled it all away that afternoon. Over the next several days I met them at my in-law's house and they arrived as scheduled each day.
The entire project took several days because of the nature of the work, they could only get to a certain point before having to wait for something to dry or set. For example, they had to rent a hammer (noted as a potential issue in the contract) to remove the concrete around the shower drain, install new plumbing to code, and pour new concrete. They also poured concrete for a new shower which was a couple day process. and always cleaned up after they finished each day and explained what they were doing each step of the way. They made several suggestions which we agreed were the right choice in the remodel process.
They tiled the entire wall to wall shower enclosure (5' wide, small bathroom!) including the floor, walls, window opening, ceiling and existing shelf. They installed a wall to wall shower door and the bathroom is so much brighter now, my in-laws were extremely pleased with the results.
's work ethic excellent, he unclogged a slow drain, added a second overhead light in the shower, filled in the space in the wall (outside of the shower) where the wall was way out of plumb, at no additional cost over the original estimate. and were very pleasant and fun to work with, good sense of humor yet very professional. I highly recommend them to anyone doing kitchen or bathroom remodeling.
