arrived in his Lexus and began on a heavy sales spiel with particular overemphasis on the vacuum they use to minimize dust. We concluded the meeting and I got his high-gloss business card and another prompt for my wife and I to visit his showroom. He promptly sent the estimate the next evening but it was more than twice as much as the next highest bid (other bids were also from "A"-listers from the site) and lacked a lot of information. Although a description of the work to be performed was provided, it included unnecessary detail (like the type of concrete sealer and wood adhesive and the vacuum) but didn't include the correct strip dimensions or any cost itemization (even for the sealer and adhesive) such as whether shoe molding was already included in the quote or not. To give him the benefit of the doubt, I responded to his quote and pointed out that the estimate was significantly higher than others because it may have been for hand-scraped floors, which we had discussed, that can be labor-intensive and more expensive. I asked him to provide an estimate for unscraped floors with the correct thickness and include an itemization of the costs if the earlier estimate had been for hand-scraped floors, which he had said his company specializes in, and I haven't heard a peep since. I suspect they much prefer a clientele that isn't concerned with costs. Be sure to get other bids if you are.

What recourse does the tradesman take when problems occur with the job? Is he responsible? "The floors in our house are yellow pine; we had them refinished about ten years ago, except for the back bedroom, which was pretty worn-out. We moved the furniture out of the room ourselves before the work began.

showed up exactly on time each day. The first day was the longest -- it was all the sanding and the first coat of polyurethane. The next two days were the successive coats. We got oil-based poly, satin finish, no stain, to match the rest of the house, and it all looks fantastic now. Note that if you go with oil-base poly like we did, you cannot have any pilots or flame in the area. It will smell, but we have the windows open and it's gone already.
