"We had a misunderstanding about removing caulkin on one end of the base. I had two call backs. The first time the sliding doors were dragging. The second callback" was to fix the handles so the doors could bypass.

"I was looking to replace some older windows in my house and started my research to find the right window. The lead me to " as they were a reseller of one of the manufacturers I was interested in for replacement. I used Angie's List as a cross-reference to ensure they were a quality dealer. The reviews were positive, so I wanted to have them quote the job for my house. This was the first time I was let down by the Angie's List community as I was not impressed by . The sales rep ( ) was a nice guy but seemed really unorganized for the type of job he has. Examples: 1) Averaged around 30 minutes late to both appointments at my house 2) Emails (quotes) did not make it over to me because of email problems, had to follow up to find out what was happening 3) Quoted one price and had him make some adjustments (should have brought the cost down), but instead it went up The only reason I felt compelled to write a review is my experience was completely opposite of all the others I have read. I am sure they do quality work, but I did not trust them with the job due to the confusion the sales process seemed to be. I found a different contractor to do the same windows for much cheaper than , so I would recommend shopping around before making your choice (if you go only off reviews)

Window Repair and Restoration

When window replacement isn't an option due to cost or preservation concerns, repairing or restoring your home's windows can return them to their former glory.

Replacement Windows

Replacing your home's windows may require a large investment. Learn what types of materials are available and what those energy efficiency ratings mean.

Angie's List

This handy infographic provides tips on household tasks to do in autumn, including gutter cleaning, roof inspections, chimney cleaning and stopping drafts around windows and doors. How Angie's List can help.

If you're selling your Illinois home in 2015, make sure to check the condition of your window and doors. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Grace M. of Chicago)

Replacing double-hung wooden windows with newer vinyl windows may seem like an obvious choice, but it's not your only option.

Buyer beware: unscrupulous contractors and shady deals are everywhere.

Angie's List member Eric D. of Chicago had three storm windows installed during a larger window replacement project.

Adding storm windows can improve your home's energy efficiency.

Angie's Answers

?

Hello - I hope my answer will help point you in the right direction.

The reason you're having a hard time getting clear information is because there are hundreds of companies saying their window is the best. There are probably millions of different features you can choose to have for your windows and in price ranges from $169-$1200 (per double-hung window).

I've been in the business for 15 years and have seen many different window products from many different dealers and manufacturers. This all comes down to: "what's important for you and your home?" If you want a strong warranty from a company who has a full-time service department to give you piece of mind and service your windows should needs be, or are you looking at only those companies who offer true wood interior windows that you can paint or stain to match the home decor? Whatever is your hot-button, then that's where you want to start.

I would recommend you first choose how you want your new windows to look. Wood-interior with vinyl clad is only offered by certain companies, while there is a vinyl woodgrain finish to give you similar results without the maintenance. If you're only looking for a white interior and don't want the maintenance, a fiberglass or vinyl window would be the best choice from what is offered in the market today (vinyl will be less expensive - not necessarily cheaper quality). If you are going to change out a window to a french door and a door to a window, then you WILL NEED to find a contractor with some carpentry experience. Some companies will tell you upfront that they do not handle those sorts of remodeling projects due to the complexity and time it would take to get it complete.

Unfortunately, we won't be able to personally help you with your project as we work in the New England Area. However, if you wish to talk further, please feel free to email me at: sven@ritewindow.com and I'll be happy to let you know our prices for what we offer so you can compare and hopefully find a similar company to do the work for you near the Austin area.

Cheers!

?

Get your roofer back out there.  Course of shingles above the window need to be pulled, self sealing flashing, drip caps, and counter and step flashing are going to be required here.

This is a flashing issue as the window connects to the mansard roof surface.

Condensation and a leak are two different and very noticeably different (i.e. volume) things.

Flashing and roofing on Mansards can be tricky but is sounds very much like a roofing issue.

?

For a broken window (or leaking seal in multi-pane unit), for a standard roughly 2x3 foot window, can run from low of about $75-125 for single pane to more like $200-300 range for triple pane, depending on construction and any special ultraviolet or heat reflective coatings. If a removeable window unit, of course cheaper to remove it and take to replacement glass place then have them come out, measure glass size, order glass unit, then come back to install.

If taking in yourself, commonly they can do single-pane in an hour or two, but count on a week or so typically for sealed double or triple pane unit to come in, so you will have to seal the opening in the interim. That is an advantage of having them come out - they measure and determine type of unit on first visit and can seal with tape and plastic sheeting (if you have not already done that), then come back with new unit and install a week or two down the road - but you are not stuck with an opening in the wall for a long time.

?

+1

Much easier to scratch and typically not as good a finished quality as compared to glass.

Benefits are the resistance to breakage as mentioned by LCD.  Any glazing shop should be able to re-create that panel.

?

Thermal numbers look okay when looking at the NFRC.

Do you have any other data on them?  Air infiltration, Design Pressure, Visible Transmittance, and Condensation Resistance are all good evaluators.

http://www.mercuryexcelum.com/images/customer-files/Advantage.pdf

Air infiltration rate is way high at 0.21.

It may look nice in person but the performance numbers are below average.

If you are being sued and/or counter suing, then you should hire a lawyer.  While you can do small claims court and sue without a lawyer, the Contractor's insurance will provide him a lawyer to defeat you.  Plus, odds are good the Contractor has more court experience than the average Home Owner, especially if this is his standard opperating procedure.  If you go against a lawyer, you will lose, even if you are right (Saying the right thing at the wrong time is very bad in court rooms.  Get a lawyer who knows the processes).

Once you decide you are suing, there should be no further contact or access to the property with the contractor.  If you have already been told you are suing, you should stop all access to your property (you are allowing them to gather evidence AGAINST you.  Your lawyer may be able to reach an agreement outside of court to allow the contractor to fix the work within a specific time period, but even then make sure you are not in contact with the contractor.  Anything you say, will be turned against you ("The Home Owner said it was okay.")

A building official has no legal obligation in court; his job is safety and minimum construction requirements as allowed per Code.  He has no say over materials and methods, and cannot assess damage. (IRC doesn't have a requirement that the door you mention exceed 35", so he won't care it isn't 36" as an example).  What he CAN do is state if the work is unsafe or causing other conditions which are unsafe.  Let your lawyer decide; but it is not in your best interest to have the Building Offical inspect with the contractor.

To sue you need to show damages.  Get another contractor (get some references or hire an architect to help ensure you get what you need) to inspect the work and give an estimate to repair.  The amount the contractor(s) estimates becomes what you seek in court (plus court fees) from the contractor.  If his work caused problems, you should be suing, not sued.

Also, be aware that no door manufacturer makes an actual 36" door (as an example).  They each have their own frame sizes, so a "36 door" in reality will be 35 7/8" to 35 3/8".  Each door maker has slightly different sizes (go online, you can see Pella, Anderson, Kolbe-Kolbe, etc. have their actual sizes available for PDF downloads).  If you replace a Pella 36" with an Anderson's 36" they won't fit perfectly.  In fact, the different styles within the same manufacturer are sometimes even different.  The purpose of trim is to hide the gap between the wall and door frame, so your door may be perfectly fine in size and method of installation.

When you have this work corrected (and for any future work) utilize the services of a lisenced Architect.  They will oversee the work, review requests for payments and document existing conditions and conditions found during construction to prevent the situation you are now in.  They will also ensure the proper permits are filed and the inspections called for.  Because they are a third party to the agreement, they can be the 'bad guy' and make the contractor perform, where you just have to pay the invoices they approve.  The contractor deals with the Architect (and vice versa) and you get the project you wanted. The cost of the architect would have been around $3,200 and is minimal compared to what you are dealing with now, the peace of mind is worth it and architects often find cost savings that go directly back to the Home Owner.  When you account for time alone, you will have spent more than this on just preparing and attending the court case.

Because this is headed to court, stop all communication with the contractor and get yourself counsel.  Good luck.

I contacted to get an opinion of what the problem may be and to get a quote to fix the issue. came out, looked at the laundry room floor/kitchen ceiling and provided some possibilities of problems and solutions but did let me know that the true problem couldn't be diagnosed until the floor was opened ...More up. This meant a true final estimate couldn't be provided but he was able to give me a ballpark number. After meeting with other contractors and receiving other estimates I made the decision to go with and his team. Once the day came to start work, the team came out opened the floor and immediately was able to address all the problems. stayed on the jobsite until the issues were discovered and explained/showed me each one and what would need to be done to fix the issue then his team went to work. Everyone at has been friendly, professional, and has demonstrated that they care about their clients and want them to be happy with the work that is done. I couldn't be happier with the repairs and the new laundry room floor. I even added in replacing my lighting in the kitchen while they were at it and I have already contracted for my next project. Thank you for a job well done to , , , and the rest of the team!

Installation went extremely well. The guys did a fabulous job. The windows are beautiful. , the salesman, stopped by on installation day to be sure all was going well.
A month or so after the install I called to tell him that there was a small hole in one of the screens. He came over that ...More same day to pick up the old screen. Talk about responsive!!

The products are fine (with the exception of the storm door, see below) and the installers and salesman were all professional, compenent, and friendly. The issue is with , the Service Manager.
Here is my history with and service visits from :
1. Not long after the ...More storm door was installed, one of the pins used to move the glass panels up and down broke, so I called to come out and fix it. It took several lengthy phone calls with in order to get her to understand what the problem was and once she finally did, it was a painful process to get a service scheduled. Ultimately the problem did get fixed, but not after a painful ordeal. A few weeks later the pin on the other side of the door broke, and I did not feel it was worth it to go through the frustration of working with again, so I just left it. It remains broken to this day.
2. When the entry door was installed, it didn't come with the right knob - we were told that could order knobs and deadbolts with locks that match our existing keys/locks for the other doors in the house. We have Schlage locks in the other doors and provided the salesman our key code, assuming this would be all we needed to do. Well, the day the door was installed the installers did not have the right knobs, with the correct key code. They installed another knob and I was told it was only temporary and they would come out with the correct knob with matching locks. I tried to call to schedule this visit and yet again it was a very painful process with multiple phone calls involved. Finally someone came out and still did not have the correct knob. He left and we had to schedule another visit - with more phone calls with . On the third visit he came out, still with the incorrect knob, and this was when I was told that they couldn't actually match the locks like I was told they could. The service tech, our frustration, promptly removed the knob and deadbolt, and took it to the local hardware store to get the locks matched.
3. Fast forward to August 2015 - one of the windows that was added last year as part of the addition must have been hit by a rock or something, as it has about a pea sized hole in it (just the outer pane, not all the way through). I am grateful that has an excellent warranty program and will replace the pane for free, however, this means more phone calls with . I called to tell her the problem, explain which window it was, etc. I called her from work since that is where I am during the time they were open to call. was very unwilling to order the pane of glass without me at home to "look at it" while I was talking with her. Even though I was able to answer all of her questions, including the side of the casement window where the hole is, the exact window that it happened to (even matched it up to the original work order), she still made me call her back the next day when I was actually at home because she was too nervous to order the pane without that confirmation.
The replacement pane came in and while it was in the warehouse waiting for my appointment, it was accidentally broken. This means they had to order a new pane, and then wait until it came in (2 weeks) before would schedule my install. This set me back another month, so in all it took over two months to get a window pane replaced.
A summary of my experience with :
- Windows are excellent quality and warranty is great
- Doors not so much. I would not recommend buying doors of any kind from this company.
- , the Service Manager, is unhelpful, un-knowledgable about the Company's products and processes, incometent, and condescending. Every time I ask a question or try to get an explanation for something she tells me, she just responds back in a condescending voice as if she's reading from a script, and doesn't actually know what she is talking about.

I was referred to by a friend who had contracted with them and had all good things to say about them. From the moment came out and chatted with me about the windows and their warranty (which is amazing!) until the completed installation Friday, I received nothing but the best service from ...More -- the best service I've had in a long time. The pricing was highly competitive, the windows were ordered when said they would be, and they were delivered and installed exactly when he said they would be. The windows were delivered Friday late morning and they were done by mid-afternoon. The installer was polite, friendly and cleaned up after himself. After he left, there was no evidence he'd even been there except for our beautiful new windows! The quality of the windows is outstanding. They made an immediate difference in both the sound and the temperature in my home. The master bedroom and nursery were both so much quieter and not breezy at all - problems we had with the previous windows. Additionally, I received a follow-up call from this morning asking how everything went and if there was anything else they could do for me. It's great to finally work with a company that values its customer service and delivers when they say they will. Since I did not have all my windows replaced this time, I will definitely be calling back to replace the rest of my windows. Hands down one of the best companies I've ever worked with.

While I was cleaning the top window (which was tilted inward so that I could clean it), the bottom window fell out. I called they were here in about an hour! He did the repair expertly and explained a few things to me. What great responsiveness and work! I will definitely call them again if I have another problem. I highly recommend them!

They didn?t seal around the window and I had a water leak. They repaired it after I got a hold of them but they didn?t do a great job with repair either. Will not use them again.

This company is a complete s***-show. I ordered $12,000 worth of windows and after 3 months, 7 home visits, 3 broken windows, 4 times window parts were made incorrectly, 2 times that service appointments were called off, I STILL HAVE TWO FAULTY WINDOWS! I was "assured" the last time that the parts would come in correct and "QC" would ...More double check before sending them out. Of course I get a call today about an appointment (that no one told me I had) being canceled because once AGAIN, the parts came in wrong. They offered me a 5% discount but after all this, I wouldn't have paid them a dime for this type of service and product. I would NEVER recommend any one to use this company and anyone who is thinking about using them, don't unless you like to be ripped off and jerked around for months on end.

We are very satisfied with our new triple pane windows. The folks were accurate, friendly, and efficient throughout the whole process.
The product representative really worked with us in scheduling our initial appointment. He was courteous and well informed about the product. There was no pressure ...More or "sales pitch" type feeling during the window estimate. Rather, he concisely explained the product and answered all our questions very well.
Once we had decided to get windows, the follow up from the office was prompt. They contacted us and kept us up to date through the window building and installation scheduling process.
The installation folks were punctual on the install date. They were efficient and they finished right on time.
The windows themselves look great! There were a variety of colors for the outside and inside trim so that they matched both the exterior and interior of our house. They look like they've been in our house all along. They are very solidly built. They close tight yet they are easy to open. They also work great to decrease outside noise and insulate the house.
All in all, this was a great effortless experience from start to finish. I would highly recommend windows for both the quality of the product and the great customer experience.
