Replacements recommended for fogged windows

"My front windows face southwest. I have no shade trees in the front yard, so I'm expecting my front rooms to get hot this summer. I also have condensation between the panes. I plan to replace the windows but am getting conflicting advice. Should I get low-e (low-emissivity) glass and rely on it to block infrared heat waves, or get clear glass and have an infrared-reflective film applied? Which will give me the best results?" — Angie's List member Roger Linville

First, Linville should replace his windows to get rid of the condensation that's built up, says Dan Schelkopf, owner of highly rated Solar Solutions in Westerville, Ohio, which also services Columbus, Ohio.

He can replace them with LoE3 glass, which is very effective, but also very pricey. Instead, he suggests installing clear glass windows with aftermarket window film to block about 99 percent of UV rays, at a much lower cost.

Mike Van Gundy, owner of highly rated Empire Window Co. LLC in Delaware, Ohio, also licensed to service Columbus, Ohio, says the low-e coated glass products that use an Argon gas package (the insulating barrier used instead of air between two panes of glass) are the best option. He specifically recommends buying a quality vinyl window with Solar ban 70 XL low-e coating with Argon gas.

On the other hand, Mark Repucci, owner of highly rated Sun Block Window Film in Columbus, believes there are advantages to both LoE3 glass and film. "However, film tends to give higher performance and allows you to choose the look and feel you want," Repucci says.
