"Received quotes for 2 non-tankless water heaters. Found a coupon on Angie's List for water heater replacement, that turned out to be vaguely worded, and caused me to be unhappy. The coupon states "Angie's List members will receive 15% off up to $500. Not valid with tankless water heaters and not valid with any other offer". We were thinking $330 off ($2200 x 15%), and since that total was <$500 maximum coupon amount, we were good. But when we presented the coupon, and in subsequent phone conversation, were were told that the value of the coupon was a

. of $75 ($500 x 15%). We were given $75 off, but the situation left a bad taste in my mouth. Aside from the coupon issue, the work was done very well, promptly, professionally.

"They did a great job and finished sooner than expected. Also, while they were there, the plumber noticed that the toilet had some mineral build up that was causing it to not flush as well and fixed that at no charge. Also discounted the charge for clearing the bathtub drain."

Does a leaking water heater violate code?

Anytime a contractor tells you that you have a code violation, seek the opinion of at least two more reputable professionals in your area to help make sure what you’re being told is legitimate. When in doubt, contact your local code enforcement agency. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Michael K.)

Dear Angie: My water heater is leaking. The plumber I hired said it would cost $150 for a water heater code violation. Do you know what he is talking about? Is there such a thing? – G.C., Columbia, S.C.

Temperature relief valves critical to water heater safety

A T&P relief valve is a two-in-one safety device, which, as its name implies, responds to both excessive temperature and to excessive pressure in a water heater. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Robert B.)

Water heaters have many critical components, but none are more critical than the temperature relief valve. Learn how to make sure that your both T&P valve and thermal expansion tank are both working properly

"Initially the company did not have someone call me within 15 minutes like they said. I had to call back and speak to another rep who helped me. Within 5 minutes I got a call.

was very knowledgeable and professional. I tried to fix myself but am very happy with the service provided. Fix was completed in 40 min from the time

got to my house. Other company wanted $229 for the first hour + $170 for each additional hour, def glad I called ecoplumbers. Service was on a sunday evening."

"They were very prompt in their response. They were good with finding out what the problem was and what it would require to replace the old until with what I would be satisfied with. They were pretty fast about getting the job done, it was completed in less than 10 days. They did a really nice job."

"These guys are incredibly good. They are unbelievably good. We normally have them out at least two times a year for general plumbing. We like these people. We are impressed because he came in and had extra time and was going to charge for the half hour or hour anyway. What impresses us is that we know every time they come in it is going to be $80 and we know that they will get the problem solved and they are there to fix anything else and will let us know. We will absolutely use them again; they are the best."

"Called for an estimate to replace our water heater(too small for 4 girls taking showers). Had to call twice as the first time we never got a call back. They came out the next day and looked over our set up. Recommended we add a 40

tank to our existing tank as it isn't that old. We discussed the additional plumbing work that would be needed. He said he would get back to us with a quote..to date..nothing. He did say he had more business than he knew what to do with....which is good for him...but I'd rather be told that before he came out. Disappointing, since they also serviced our furnace and do good work. I will be taking my business elsewhere since they have no time for past customers."

"They did a great job. The previous water heater company came out and said that we could not install the new kind of hybrid hot water heater in our basement.

was able to do it perfectly fine. We would use them again in the future if we needed to. "

"After 6 weeks of emails and phone calls, I could not ONCE get them to return my call. This is Home Depot's contractor. I wanted a Rheem, so I purchased it from HD and was connected to this company for install. They quoted me $360 for all permits/parts/install/removal. HD has special orange phone at their store that you use to be connected to their contractors to arrange install. I was connected to

at WatHePlus. He was nice, but there was some confusion as to how the heater vented, so I had to take a photo and email it to him, which I did the next day. By the end of the next week I hadn't heard back, so I resent the email, with a clearer subject line. No response. I called and left a message with a woman who answered the phone, explained I had emailed it twice, confirmed email address, and asked for him to return my call. No response. I emailed again. Nothing. I called again. No response. Finally got name of president,
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
, called and left message for him. No response. This was over 6 weeks. Because they were the HD installer, it was easiest for me to use them, but since they can't be bothered to respond to email or phone calls before they have my money, what can I expect once they've got it??? I have since called someone else and they are only charging me $275, so in the end, it's going to save me money to use someone else. Plus they returned my phone call the same day! (

Plumbing) In response to provider's response below it was a straight replacement and removal of an old water heater. I have documented names of who I spoke with and I have the quote written down. It says $75 permit/$250 install/$45 materials for total of $370 (I wrote $360 above but I see added wrong). And as I explained above but the owner apparently didn't understand, this was in addition to the cost of the water heater itself which was purchased at HD (the brand they have there is manufactured by Rheem). And like I said I made multiple phone calls and after talking to
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
that first time from the HD store orange phone that directly connected me with him, I never got any return calls or emails. I also have copies of the emails I sent. It seems the owner below is just grasping at
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
to explain what I wanted although it was clearly explained above. Regardless of what I wanted tho, it does not excuse their complete lack of response and professionalism.

plumbing did a great job for $275, were extremely helpful and promptly returned my calls. I just wished I had called them right away than ever trying to go through HD.

"I had
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
(the owner) come out to evaluate a forced vent water heater that was having issues. It was determined that upgrading to a tankless system would be the best course of action based on the replacement cost and combined with the federal tax credits.
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
represents both of the major US tankless manufactures(Rinnai and Noritz) and explained the benefits and issues of both.
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
is a Rinnai ASP(Authorized Service Provider) Platinum level installer. There are only 2 Platinum installers in the Columbus area!
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
explained what work would need to be completed (remove old unit, install larger gas line, mount unit, etc) and worked to find a location for mounting the unit that was agreeable to me. I also had him estimate some miscellaneous plumbing work while he was going to be on site. I selected the Rinnai 94LSi, the largest unit that qualifies for the federal tax credits. The quote I received was in-line with several others and wasn't the lowest or highest.
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
and his assistant arrived on time to complete the work. Overall work took just about 5 hours from start to finish (including the additional work I had requested). They kept the area neat while working and cleaned up the area prior to leaving. After
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
left, I noticed that the system exhibited some strange issues when using cold facets. The issue didn't impact functionality but I had concerns regarding future warranty coverage. The issue wasn't related to the installation that
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
did, but rather the overall house plumbing and city water supply.
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
was prompt to return my phone calls and worked with the manufacture rep to get the problem resolved.
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
worked very hard to solve the problem and didn't give up when I feel most other plumbers would have, since the system was "technically" working, but didn't fully meet my expectations. All issues were resolved and I appreciate that
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
worked very hard to ensure that I was 100% satisfied with the unit and work he completed. It was apparent that
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
stands behind his work and products and ensures that you are happy before the job is considered done. I would recommend
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
and if I need plumbing work done, I will have him back out. I'm loving my new unit. 3 people can take hot showers back to back, which we could never do before. 3 people can also shower at the same time for as long as they want! I have an 80
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
garden tub and it is great to fill it up with hot water all the way to the top. My gas usage also dropped by about 1/3. It's great not having a pilot burn gas 24x7. In the summer, my gas bill is so low, I pay more in the basic charges (meter reading, service etc) than I do for gas. Summer bills are all under $20 with 2-3 showers daily, dishwasher 3 times a week and 6 loads of laundry.

"This turned out to be a good experience after some minor communication issues. Found pricing/basic info on their web page on Tues. eve; no phone number listed. Their prices were comparable to what I found at local hardware/appliance stores for similar products. I opted for a second anode rod, longer tank warranty for approx. $120 more. Called a number listed on Angie's on a Wednesday <8am to ask questions about potential installation issues with narrow space/no drain. I wanted installation before Sat.
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
answered and relieved my concerns about the installation location and date, and that a damaging tank rupture with my small leak and bad valve was unlikely; not pushy at all. He needed to confirm the tank size for my space and was to call me back. When I didn't hear back later that morning, I called a few times to no avail. Just as I was ready to try another company,
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
called back at the end of the day. Here I hadn't been calling the main office, but an installer's work phone. I had choice of installation windows on Friday. I did not get the 30-minute advance call; though not big issue since company close to my home. The installer showed up 10 minutes after I got home late for the start of the installation window. Installer Tord was pleasant and got the work done quickly -- in a little over an hour. He answered my questions/concerns calmly and logically; showed me how to turn off/on the pilot. Some clean up afterwards might be an issue for some. Approx. week later I called office (at correct number this time) and got immediate answer from a courteous
Columbus Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
on my warranty form questions. I'd recommend them.
