"I called Mr.
on Monday, he returned my call within a couple hours, and came to my house two days later on Wednesday. Mr.
arrived promptly" as scheduled. He was polite, diligent, did the work at my home, and left the area where he worked clean. He explained that he had previously had a career as an upholsterer working for several local companies and now, retired, he does repair work in customer homes. I failed to ask for an estimate before work began. Mr.
hand-stitched the four frayed areas. I feel like Mr.
did a professional job and I was pleased with the outcome. Obviously, since the furniture is a decade old and I had no replacement fabric, the process involved pulling together the frayed fabric so it could not be made to look exactly like the original the new corners are rounded and the old corners squared). I do feel that Mr.
made the best of the situation and I will no longer feel embarrassed or have to give an explanation as to why an inch of stuffing is poking out of my furniture corners when I have guests over. The repairs took Mr.
5 hours which means the charge breaks down to $70/hour. I did not get a price estimate from any alternate upholstery company. Therefore, I don't know what this would cost elsewhere. But since the only material provided was thread and Mr.
has no shop overhead, I did feel like a labor charge of $70/hours is pricey and therefore gave a lower rating in that category. It is possible that other companies have similar/higher labor charges and my Angie's List rating in the Price category is unjustified.

"I called first to make sure I could bring my own fabric, which was okay with them. I had a moving man take my two old chairs in to the shop on 5th Avenue. They called right away with" an estimate, which was quite reasonable. I met with them and consulted on the project, and they had good suggestions for the project. I visited the chairs during the process and the workmanship looked very very good. The process is not quick, but I have custom-made chairs with a fabric I choose.

"Someone suggested we go to Fabirc Farms when we wanted to put cushions on our wooden dining room chairs. When we met
and
we liked them" immediately. They spent a good deal of time with us finding the right fabric and they did a fantastic job! As we were remodeling our home we needed to have draperies made for our Great Room. We considered a few different places and went with
. Again, a fantastic job at a reasonable price. At that point we knew we wanted to continue working with them. When you find a provider who carries a great variety and quality of material and merchandise and who does outstanding custom work you stay with them. Plus, they're extremely pleasant to work with.
does a large percentage of the sewing and we were blown away with the work he did for us. Every project was given the foccus and attention it required until we were satisfied. They use an excellent installer for their window treatments, too. We can't say enough about these guys.

Should I hire an upholstery professional for my furniture?

Many people have no idea of the costs or benefits in reupholstering a piece of furniture. Learn how upholstering can benefit your current furniture.

An upholsterer can revitalize an older piece of furniture with new fabric and even restructuring. While the work can be costly, it can be worth it to preserve a well-made item. (Photo courtesy of Angie’s List member Catherine R.)

Upholstery

Upholstering is the process of covering a high-quality piece of furniture, antique or keepsake with materials such as fabric and padding. Freshen the look of a room by giving furniture a new look.

Angie's Answers

?
I second the original question (still unanswered). Speaking as someone who logged in today to try to find an attorney, I see this category as one that's exactly what I have my Angie's List membership for:

1. It's important that I find a good one
2. I'm not an expert enough to know myself who is a good one
3. The industry is full of advertisements and misinformation
4. I wish I knew what experiences other people have had

?
I don't care about lawns--I planted mine in clover and don't have to mow it. When I do need to mow I use a rotary Fiskars mower, which is great--or a scythe. That's right--a scythe (the European type, which is smaller, and it's very good exercise). Gas-powered mowers, chemical fertilizers and weed killers--all nasty stuff that gets into everyone's air, soil, and water. I'm sure my neighbor doesn't like my wildflowers, semi-wild pockets of fruit bushes, and unmown areas and yes, dandelions (I have 10 acres) but that's too bad. It's better habitat for wildlife, especially the pollinators on which our food supply depends. I think this obsession with the Great American Lawn is a waste of time and resources. Plant some food instead.

?
I'm not sure Angie et. al. want you to have a complete answer to this question. By re-subscribing at the Indiana State Fair in 2012, I think I paid $20.00 per year for a multi- year subscription. Maybe even less. At the other extreme--and I hope my memory isn't faulty about this--I think the price, for my area, for ONE year was an outrageous $70.00. And they debited me automatically without warning. I had to opt out of that automatic charge. I like Angie's List, but if some of the companies they monitor behaved the way they do in this respect, they'd be on some sort of Pages of Unhappiness. I'll be interested to see if this comment gets published or censored out of existence.

You have to put your self in the shoes of a business that is in business to turn a profit of some sort. All businesses have different overhead which in turn decides what their bottom line would be on their services. I personally would not go with an unlicensed professional for this type of install. You are messing with gas, venting issues, electrical wiring{electric water heater} and updated code issues such as a drain pan and tempature and relief drain lines for heaters that currently do not have them. I do agree that there are some companies that are way out of line for their installs but most of these companies are the really big companies that have very high overheads  I would assume. Tank type water heaters have changed over the last several years and with these safety changes come bigger prices. The price of steel thanks to China is skyrocketing and tank type water heaters are made of steel. Most wholesale plumbing supply companies cannot match what the big box stores are selling at retail to consumers. I happen to think from research that heaters such as Rheem, Bradford White and AOSmith who have been in business forever make a better product than what you can buy in the big box outlets. You also have to take in consideration the location of the water heater that is being replaced. Is it in the house, basement, garage or attic. Most 40 and 50 gallon water heaters that are purchased in a plumbing wholesale store in Texas cost between 300-340 for a 6 year warranty heater with 6 year on parts and tank. Speaking of warranty. Most big box companies will take a least 24 hours to a week to get your warranty problem taken care of. Most reputable plumbing companies will give same day service if they installed the heater.

So lets break down a typical install at cost to a licensed plumber in Texas

Heater: $315, water shut off $6.50, water flex lines or unions to code $20, gas flex line and cut off to code $12, misc fittings $15, Total $368.50 Lets add a 35% profit which is some what low  for a business $129, Total 497.50

This doesnt  include permits, pan and drain or any venting issues. The vent must go from the heater to the outside of roof using double wall vent.

Cost of permit on average $60

Most plumbing companies allow for 3 hours of time for a water heater. This includes picking the new one up. Delivering out to house. Draining and removing old water heater. Hauling off old heater. Installing new heater up to code. Going down to city and pulling permit.

Average Labor charges for heater installs $400

That would make this install run without extras on any code issues $957.50

I just had a 50 gallon gas water heater installed in my house for $1200 but I needed a pan installed. I used a licensed plumber.

That's very difficult to answer without seeing the house. As one poster said, the prep is the most important part. On newer homes that don't have a lot of peeling paint, the prep can be very minimal even as low as a couple or a few hundred dollars for the prep labor.

On a 100 year old home with 12 coats of peeling paint on it, then the prep costs can be very high and can easily exceed 50% of the job's labor cost.

A 2100 sq ft two story home could easily cost $1000 just for the labor to prep for the paint job. That number could climb too. Throw in lots of caullking  or window glazing, and you could be talking a couple or a few hundred dollars more for labor.

Painting that home with one coat of paint and a different color on the trim could run roughly $1000 or more just for labor. Add a second coat  and that could cost close to another $1000 for labor.

For paint, you may need 20 gallons of paint. You can pay from $30-$70 for a gallon of good quality exterior paint. The manufacturer of the paint should be specified in any painting contract. Otherwise, the contractor could bid at a Sherwin-Williams $60 per gallon paint and then paint the house with $35 Valspar and pocket the difference. $25 dollars per gallon times 20 gallons? That's a pretty penny too.

That was the long answer to your question. The short answer is $2000 to $4000 and up, depending upon the amount of prep, the number of coats, the amount of trim, and the paint used.

?
Todd said it best.

An itemized list / cost breakdown, more often than not is used against the contractor when it is shared with other builders who will then beat it.

Good contractors use good people, and good people cost more.  Just the cost of having the appropriate insurance / bond can be the difference between winning a job or losing it ot a 'lower bid'.

It is the rule of three; there is Good, Cheap and Fast.  You can have any two:  Good and Cheap, won't be Fast; Good and Fast, won't be Cheap;  Cheap and Fast, won't be Good!

When comparing bids, it isn't the cheapest or the 'nicest' person you should select.   You should understand why there is a large price difference (it shows there are gaps in your design program or what you have asked for specifically, which means there may be arguments later).  If most of the bids are in line, and one is way high or way low,  you want to know why before dismissing or selecting them.

A price-only decision almost always costs more in the long run.

Good luck!

Very smoothly. They picked up, did the work, delivered. It takes a little time with them, but the excellence of the finished product is worth it and dealing with them is a pleasure. I have lived with it now for a year and it is perfect in every way.

I visited the shop which is located in the neighborhood to inquire about service. Spoke with employee who passed my contact number to owner to schedule time for estimate of work. Owner called within hour and scheduled for later that day. He arrived promptly and answered all my questions about stain color. Had assistant with him and they were able to load table and chairs onto truck right then. Quoted 3 weeks to finish. Work was done within quoted time and delivered without incident. At that point gave owner the material for chairs and they were returned within 1 week as promised. Nice job on all work. Extra care to center large, flowing material pattern on each chair seat so all were uniformly done. Also, took great care in selection of stain color to give me the desired effect I was looking for. The owner,

Found
Columbus Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
's through Angie's List recommendation and they were just down the street from my brother! We each had a chair that's been in the family for some time, and they were desparately in need of updating.
Provided my own fabric for the smaller chair, and selected a fabric from
Columbus Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
for the wing chair. They added chrome hammer head nails, which really completed the look.
Very nice work.
Took a little longer than I planned, but I was not on any timeline to get the chairs, so it was not a big deal. Once I shared with them the date that I needed to pick them up, they were most accomodating to wrap things up quickly and have them ready.
Love the look of our "new" chairs! One turned out so nicely, that they had it displayed in their front window when we came to pick it up!! :)

I had a sun porch sofa in need of a makeover. The cushions were faded, worn and looked tired. I call
Columbus Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
to explain that I wanted new fabric on my same cushions. I was set me up with a store appointment within the week so I could bring in a few cushions and an armrest for
Columbus Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
to measure and suggest fabrics to be used. After I selected a possible fabric,
Columbus Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
estimated her bill, divided for labor and fabric cost. She informed me that she had no problem working with fabric from another store if I could find the yardage needed. Luckily,
Columbus Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
's was running a half price sale and had a design I really liked. Buying the fabric on sale at
Columbus Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
's allowed me to fall within a set budget and
Columbus Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
did the labor for ~$325 and I got the fabric for ~$125.
Columbus Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
had the cushions and arm rests completed before I expected, and her work was beautiful. She took care to wrap each cushion in plastic for clean transport. I couldn't be more pleased.
