Cover texture with siding, Cleveland contractor advises

"My 2,200-square-foot house has a horrible texture coat all over it (with vertical strips of wood throughout as part of the design). I had planned on stuccoing over it; however, the bids I've gotten so far are extremely high. So, now I'm thinking about trying to have the texture coat removed (and the vertical strips of wood removed) and then painting the house. However, I can't seem to find anyone to remove the texture coat. One contractor said it couldn't be sandblasted because that would damage the underlying wood. Help!" — Susan Riess

"She's got a lot of exterior work on her hands," says John Garrity, who co-owns highly Garrity Painting in Cleveland. "Heat will be a factor, as will the extensive labor and cleanup involved in such a job. Anytime you're going to remove a coating so you can have a nice smooth surface to start from, it will be very costly. You'll have to build the whole thing up again."

Jeff Desatnik, owner of Desatnik Decorating in Lakewood, Ohio, which also services Cleveland, says the best solution is to remove the wood panels and either put vinyl siding over it or a solid stained cedar wrap siding, which is more durable and requires less maintenance.

"This isn't your average handyman project," Desatnik says. "Her best bet is the cedar wrap, which looks more historic."

Homeowners should also be aware of the EPA's new federal regulations regarding contractor certification to work with lead-based paint on houses built before 1978. With Riess' home having been built in 1950, she should verify such certification online.
