COMPLAINT: Richard Jackson, Delaware
"ProCheck Engineering Inc. inspected a home in Columbus I was considering buying. My decision was based heavily on the inspection, since I lived in Florida.

I've since had issues with several portions of the home that passed the inspection. The roof had a permanent patch and received their highest rating.

The inspector listed it with a possible age of 13 years and a possible lifetime of 25 years. I've since had to replace it due to leaks that have caused mold in my home.

The floor also passed inspection even though the installation wasn't complete.

They also told me the basement was dry, but it looks as though I have an indoor pool in the basement.

I've also had issues with the septic lines that the prior owner has made good on."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want the cost of the roof: $5,279."

RESPONSE: Steve Schira, president, ProCheck Engineering Inc.
"The issues with the roof weren't brought to our attention until 18 months after the inspection.

Since the member replaced the roof without allowing us to investigate the alleged problems, we can't honor his claim.

The member was aware of the partially unfinished floor when he entered into the purchase contract. To cover his claims, he's already received additional compensation from the seller of the property as well as from ProCheck.

In return, the member signed a release of all future claims resulting from the inspection which precludes any further demands."

COMPLAINT: Patricia Smith, Pickerington

"I bought 20 new windows from Home Town Improvements. Due to the weather, they didn't get the job started right away, but I wrote a check because the office manager promised to hold it until they finished the work.

They cashed the check soon thereafter, and the job still isn't completed.

The first day they came and installed a few windows. They took two and a half hours for lunch the next two days.

They promised to complete the job within a week, and now I can't get them to install the white strips around the windows.

The office manager keeps giving me the runaround - every time I call, she tells me they'll be out the next day.

The job was paid in full a few months ago. I just want my windows finished so I can get the house painted."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like to have the white strips put around the outsides of my new windows."

COMPLAINT: Mark Williams, Columbus
"I contracted with Tom Itsell [the founder and president] and That Blind Guy. I selected products manufactured by another company and ordered six blinds for a total of $1,642.

The selected products were specified to operate in both top-down and bottom-up configurations. When they arrived, it was apparent the factory had mistakenly fabricated blinds that operated top-down only.

Itsell proposed to install the defective blinds while I waited for the replacements. I noticed they were too long, but I agreed to allow them to remain in place until the replacement blinds [were ready], as long as they corrected the length.

Itsell said he'd take care of it. When the replacement blinds arrived and they installed them, the length was the same as before.

Itsell called the factory, then recommended a repair that involved folding up the bottom of the blind and applying hot glue. This wasn't a permanent solution.

I contracted for blinds that fit. That Blind Guy was paid in full. Itsell has refused to correct the problem and has moved to Springfield, Mo."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like them to replace the blinds, or I'd like a full refund."
