Midwest Closets owner Rick Robertson may not have a skeleton in the closet, but he's met a young customer who had a few. Robertson says he found snakes, other reptiles and prairie dogs in one little boy's bedroom closet. Even with the occasional interesting job, Robertson's proud that his 22-year-old family business has repeat and referral customers. He says they hold on to their loyal customer base because they're flexible and genuinely care about helping clients meet their custom-closet needs.

What's the installation process like?

"I bring a computer with me when I go in and measure a customer's closet. The setup and design is simulated on the computer. I print it out for them, and I can easily make design adjustments with the software. The price for a normal walk-in closet ranges from about $600 to $1,500, and we offer free consultations, one-day installation and closet solutions for every room in your house."

What's the most common problem you see when organizing closets?

"People just don't have big enough closets for all their stuff. I can't grow their closet, but I can give them more hang space so they can do other things, such as add shelves. You can see your stuff a lot easier with the way we organize."

Do you ever tell customers they need to throw things away?

"We ask customers to go through their stuff before we come in. I design closets around their needs but don't help them put stuff back in there. Instead, I get a closet ready for customers to organize themselves. If they want, there are quite a few interior decorators who I recommend to help organize. I do help organize garages because I know what works best in there."

Can closet organization add value to your home?

"Custom closets are a big selling plus - the resale value is great. Once people get a custom closet, they never want to go back to life without them. We also have a lifetime warranty on our materials because we use only three-fourths-inch thermofused melamine on particleboard for our closets. It's the toughest, most durable engineered material you can buy."

What are current bedroom custom-closet trends?

"These days, people want his and her walk-in closets. Couples' bedrooms are now just a bed, chase chairs and a flat-screen TV without any chests or clothes drawers. We install the drawers inside the his and her closets, so you're basically getting completely dressed inside your own closet. The only difference between a man's and a woman's closet is that women want long hang space for their dresses. Otherwise, they normally require the same amount of space for their shoes, accessories and clothes."
