Historic Columbus building is now a cafe

Jolly Gargoyle

19 Pearl Alley N., Columbus, Ohio

In 1910, owner E. Mithoff Nicholas hired architect Carl E. Howell to build this diminutive building, which features Belgian stained-glass windows, an ornately carved stone entrance, a hand-carved bar and an oak back bar and paneling.

Originally called the Rathskeller, it was renamed the Jolly Gargoyle Art Shop and Tea Room during Prohibition. With its antique books, stationery and novelties, it was a hangout for students and artistic types. After the Repeal, the Jolly Gargoyle was sold to Al Haft, a wrestler-turned-promoter who renamed it "Ringside." It's been known as the Ringside Cafe ever since. — Shirley Hyatt
