"I called because my 20-year-old furnace's standing pilot light would not stay lit. I thought the thermocouple was bad. The service technician showed up 40 minutes early for a 9am appointment. Good thing I was ready for him. Within 5 minutes he had removed and replaced the thermocouple. He did not check the problem for himself first though. ...more The problem was not the thermocouple. The technician troubleshooted and determined that the gas valve was not working. He called the office and they no longer had one in stock so the repairman went to get one at a supply house. After a nearly hour long wait, the technician returned and informed me that the first supply house actually did not have the valve so he had to go to another one. The technician then replaced the valve in about an hour and also cleaned the furnace since it would be no added cost. He also did not charge for the thermocouple since it wasn't the cause of the problem. The technician was very friendly and professional. I enjoyed talking with him. However, I was surprised by the price. The service call was $78 but the gas valve parts and labor was $395. I should have asked before he went to get it. I have since found this valve online for $120 to $195. Maybe $100 per hour is typical for this

task and I know people need to make a living but I should have bought this valve and replaced it myself. Lesson learned."

"I called to schedule to have them come out and look at my AC that was running, but not cooling. The owner was in the area, so he was able to stop by a few hours later. Turns out that my 17 year old AC unit had rusted a good bit, and one of the wires burned/melted. He priced out a few different units, and only charged 65$ due to the problem not being resolved (he spent well over 90min). He even offered to cap a few gas lines that I had asked about that were near the cooling lines. After talking to my wife I called him back and agreed to purchase an upper range unit. He called me back the following day, and asked if he could come out and check 2 things that had occurred to him. He came out, and within 15 min had the AC working. He then spent the following hour capping the gas lines anyway. When everything was done he charged me an additional 100$ for the time and parts used the day before, as well as the hardware to cap the pipes, and a small amount of the labor. That is right, he passed up a $2,600 sale to do the right thing, and did the odd extra work even though he wasn't going to be replacing cooling lines in the area.
