Raise the garage roof for extra storage

What trends in exterior storage structures have you encountered recently?

Beard: We are seeing a considerable demand for new garages that complement the neighborhood architecturally and are built with a nod to sustainability.

Segesdy: Flat roof garages deteriorate over time, so we have seen many homeowners wanting to build bigger garages with attics or extra storage capabilities.

Zwick: Homeowners want extra storage, so we build higher-pitched roofs. With the economy as it is, prices have come down drastically, so now is the best time to build.

When's the best time for such building?

Beard: Early spring or fall is a good time to break ground. This minimizes disruption to the use of the yard during peak weather.

Segesdy: We do most of our work March through early December, weather permitting. Plan early to get things done early.

Zwick: April through early November. In the winter, newly poured concrete will crack if it gets too cold.

What kind of light source will work best?

Beard: We can now use switches to control different zones of light. This offers the homeowner flexibility in turning on/off lights.

Segesdy: Most people want garage door openers, so we install standard electrical outlets for power and lighting.

Zwick: Nothing much has changed as far as lighting options go. We haven't seen many people using skylights.

How can I maintain the life of the building?

Beard: Clean the gutters three times a year. Failure to manage water will accelerate the decay of any structure. It starts at the top!

Segesdy: Use fiber cement siding, which resembles wood, because it requires less maintenance and is almost impervious to insects.

Zwick: If you keep it clean and seal your concrete floor every few years, your garage should last up to 60 years.

What other advice can you share?

Beard: Avoid cheap construction. A well-built garage can add to the value of a home.

Segesdy: Installing garages with a higher pitched roof will allow room for a storage area.
