is good to deal with. He was the low bidder. It was a significant job that involved 25%+ of a very old house. He specializes in older homes and has done a lot of them. There were certain elements that required field changes and they did a good job taking care of them - structural work. The workmanship was a B, as some of the detailed finish work could have been better (trim, molding, painting - some areas could have had better finish carpentry). We were surprised that in a vintage

home, which we were restoring to a "period" level, that he did not plan on matching the custom trim, but cobbling conventional pieces together - he also asked for a change order for making custom molding, an we paid it to keep a positive working relationship (I would make sure you go through things like this in detail during the bid, because it is likely that the other bidders included such costs). There was some small damage to newly installed materials by his crews, like the stair case and cabinets that they attempted to fix and now stick-out like a sore thumb. We expressed we were unhappy with certain small items which he should have fixed (i.e., a big one for me was that he put a "replacement" back door in an opening, rather than replacing it in kind as the drawings showed - now too small to walk through!). For the nominal cost of such things, it left us with a bad taste - and to this day we think of him everyday for that reason when we walk through it. In hindsight, I might not have gone with the low biddder and perhaps worked with their competitors, Hudephol Construction Company or

Remodeling, for 10-20% more cost. But, he finished the job on time. He was a nice person to deal with. Everything is functional and the house turned out well, despite some small issues."

. Our house has an extremely steep roof and is three stories high, making it a difficult roof to work on. It is evident that he and his entire crew are very knowledgable about their craft.

and his crew are very good at exterior work- masonry, roofing, trim, siding, gutter repair, and rough carpentry etc. (I have hired them since, and two of my other neighbors have also now hired him for work after seeing what they did for us.) He recreated the front chimney to exactly match the customized diamond pattern of our back chimney, ran a chimney liner down the flu to help reactivate a fireplace on the front of the house, and mounted three chimney pots on the top of it to match the architectural detail of the rest of our house and the neighborhood. The bricks that he used are an exact match to the brick on the back of the house. He has a crew of a couple of other guys that help him, but is on every project the whole time. His setup is bare bones which helps him to keep his costs down, but he takes a great deal of pride in his work. I had other estimates on this work, and his cost was by leaps and bounds the least expensive. I typically don't just take the lowest bid on a project, but I felt comfortable with him (and had a good recommendation for him from another friend he did work for) and I'm glad I did. I have used him for other work since, and he has stayed consistent with his level of quality and cost. we've had a lot of contractors work on our home in various capacities, but I'm telling people about
