Basement flooding causes calculation quarrel

COMPLAINT: Jeffrey Schrier, Riverside, Ill.

"I hired Procare Carpet and Air Duct Cleaning of Schaumburg to extract water and clean up a basement flood after my sump pump failed during a power outage. My insurance adjuster calculated the fair cost of service at about $1,200, but they charged $3,235.

"The actual area of the basement was 364 square feet, but they billed for 500 square feet. Procare sent someone out to re-evaluate the bill at my request, but he refused to grant any credits. He calculated square footage by estimating the number of steps across the room.

"I challenged him with the insurance report that calculated the area exactly to the inch, but he still refused to modify the bill."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I would like Procare to credit the $2,000 difference between the insurance report and the bill."

STATUS: Resolved

Editor's note: The member reported that Procare issued a $1,889.49 credit, and he considers the matter settled.
