Vinyl siding maintenance tips for Chicago homeowners

Vinyl siding remains a versatile, durable and low-maintenance product that has been used for decades to cover blemishes, enhance curb appeal and protect homes from the elements.

With current applications, vinyl can be used both for historical preservation of older homes as well as in contemporary architecture. It can be purchased in a wide variety of colors and can even be manufactured to resemble painted wood to add additional style to a home.

Most vinyl siding manufacturers offer warranties with some lasting as long as 50 years. The Vinyl Siding Institute, a trade association that promotes the use of vinyl siding, recommends the following maintenance tips:

1. Cleaning. Vinyl siding can be washed with a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush, especially on textured surfaces. VSI recommends that cleaning should be performed from the bottom up and all bricks should be covered to avoid runoff. Some manufacturers permit the use of power washers, but may limit the amount of water pressure used and discourage certain cleaning agents.
2. Discoloration. Protect vinyl siding from staining by covering it when using sealants and certain insecticides and herbicides.
3. Painting. It may be tempting to change the color or try to freshen up the look of vinyl siding, but some manufacturers void their warranties if the original color has been altered.
4. Combustibles. Avoid close contact with heat sources, such as grills because vinyl siding is combustible and can ignite when brought in contact with existing flames.
