Catalyst does a nice job of keeping in touch, scheduling, etc. Their project team is really open to helping you with choices, etc., and were accommodating to schedules (this just happened to be over a holiday weekend and they were open to delaying moving appliances and such so that my kitchen would stay functional). I love that they stick to the schedule and communicate regularly throughout.
Our condo building and individual owners have used them for a few things now and they've pretty much been spot-on.

is very nice. He is very responsive and was easy to work with. My old gutters were just not getting the job done and had caused some interior damage in one of the bedrooms. Also, the downspout of the original gutter was located right next to the back steps, so every winter we got an ice slick. All the contractors I received an estimate from suggested oversized gutters and
had the lowest quote and and also was the only one to offer to repair the interior damage. The work was done quickly, within three days, and with no mess or difficulties. The men who came to do the work were nice and professional. I got exactly what I wanted. The gutters now drain all the water out into the front yard. They look nice and do the job. My wall was repaired and repainted and they did a good job with that as well.

In the beginning work progressed very well. These were two big projects, with two units needing work. Work began last
Chicago Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
, and is "completed" just last month. For a list of 4 items - oven range hood installation, kitchen window installation, trim, grout touch up, trash removal, it took him 4 months to complete, costing me potential rental income. There were things I had to compromise on, such as having a regular non-privacy window in the kitchen, because the window he special ordered in february was returned due to not being picked up in time. A big unfortunate occurrence is electrical work. Somehow, the power supply to the adjacent room that his electrician did work in, lost power. When asked, he said it may be the switches. I had to get another electrician, and pay $380 for repair, as I waited 4 weeks for his electrician to come out the first time and give the answer that it may be the switches.
Chicago Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
grew irate with me as I kept inquiring when the electrician is coming out, waiting 4 weeks, and words were exchanged. I didn't want to run the risk of poor electrical work, and risk of fire. What it ultimately was, was the power in the adjacent room was tied to the room where the work was performed, and a connection was lost in a buried junction box. Had to tie in the power to an adjacent switch, and repair holes made for this fix. While I understand it was not intentional, there was no coordination to resolve the problem.
If you do have work performed, no matter how minimal work there is left to do, do not pay in full, until everything, to the T, is finished, otherwise you will wait months for it to be completed. His employees are very pleasant, wonderful to work with, and their work is amazing. There is no supervision, no time management, and loss of communication if you inquire every day about someone coming to fix something that shouldn't have been broken in the first place. As unfortunate it is to pay another electrician several hundreds of dollars to fix something that wasn't broken before

got there, I can be assured it was done properly, and nothing malicious was done to compromise my safety.

I sent a request via the company's website to request an appointment for an estimate on some projects, which included:
1. Update 2 bathrooms (tile, paint, new fans)
2. Tile floors in basement
3. Replace/repair drywall
4. Replace stairs and door
Unfortunately, I never got a response from the company. Even if they were not interested in the job, I would have appreciated communication stating so. Lack of communication is a lack of professionalism for me.

It went very good. Christian and his worker that he had working with him were very professional. They were very clean and punctual. They stained our new oak doors and replaced our trim throughout the house.

Against our better judgment, my fiancee (now wife) and I decided to tackle a kitchen remodel project the spring before our summer wedding. Thus, going into this project, we stressed to all of our bidding contractors our timetable and were reassured by all that we would be done well before the June wedding - we started planning in the winter and were quoted by all bidders a timeframe of 4 weeks or so for the project - therefore, we anticipated about 6 weeks, knowing that things always happen in projects like this.
In the end, the project came out well - there were some minor design flaws and issues along the way, but when picking a contractor for a project like this, the process can be just as important as the final project.
Not all was bad: I'll start with the pros:
Pros:
-Nick - our initial project consultant was fantastic and essentially sold us on Design First - he came out to look at the space, came out with a number of different layouts, and we felt he really listened to us. He presented us with nice computerized 3-d renderings of what the space would look like and a very detailed line item quote for the project.
-Worked with city well to get our permits through in a timely fashion
-Very efficient with demolition process
-Good overall design process, good variety of cabinet and countertop choices at what seemed like a wide range of price points (note, though, products are significantly marked up - probably not unique to this design-build firm)
-actual final result of remodel turned out pretty well and so far, no major issues since using the kitchen (minor issues only - sink had a small leak at the time of install, appliance install fine and cabinetry solid
-Have a cooking school at their design center with free access to their classes.
-when issues came up, they were fairly responsive; however, I felt like these were issues that should not have come up in the first place....
-nice online dashboard that tracks project schedule, fixture selections, etc. (see caveat below)
Cons:
-project communication - had a plethora of communication and planning issues:
-our designer
Chicago Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
, we felt like didn't really communicate well with us - this resulted in delaying the start of our project by a week
or two, she cancelled a meeting with minimal notice, and also in the end designed an L-shaped kitchen counter where the corner of the "L" was designed to be completely unsuable storage space (eventually sort of fixed) without really informing us.
-our initial project manager
Chicago Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
decided to tell us he was going on vacation *2 days* before he left for a week. Ultimately, the
handoff to the new project manager was *AWFUL* and I ended up having to leave work early multiple days just to get the new
team up to speed. We found out much later that
Chicago Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
was in fact, let go from the company.
-Despite their well designed online schedule, there were numerous times were scheduled events didn't happen as planned - electrician didn't show up one day, flooring didn't get done, no one was on site when deliveries were supposed to be made (twice) appliance install kept getting pushed back, etc. Explanations eventually happened with various reasons ranging from reasonable (design process) to absurd (electrician was found sleeping on another job so they had to let him go and scramble to find other electricians) Of note, it seems like they do subcontract most of the labor, which I think is probably the norm for a design-build firm like this
-Tried to coordinate the project with a flooring contractor to get flooring done as part of the project (at about 1/2 of the cost that D1 was charging) - despite my best multiple attempts to get D1 and the flooring guys to coordinate with each other, D1 did not keep up to schedule to work with them to get the flooring done, also resulting in numerous lengthy delays for us (and essentially wasting days with the other contractors
In the end, the project, which at the beginning was supposed to start in late February/early March and take 4 weeks, ended up starting in mid-to late March and took over 10 weeks to complete, despite our constant pleas to get the project moving ahead (I think without our pleading, the project would have taken over 3 months). I'm not saying they were completely unresponsive, but it also sounded like they had a number of projects going on at the same time, and just didn't have the manpower to respond to a lot of the issues that came up in a timely fashion, particularly at the time in our project when our PM took off for Mexico. I had numerous contacts with
Chicago Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
, the firm's owner, who was appropriately empathetic, but it did not seem too much was done to really push the project forward and not a whole lot was done to compensate us financially.

Found
Chicago Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
on Angie's List and was overall very satisfied with his quality of work. We needed a general office re-model which included moving several walls / doors and re-wiring our electrical.
He answered and returned phone calls when needed and got the job done in the time frame that was originally quoted.
I would recommend him to others needing similar service.

Overall it went very well.
Chicago Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
was responsible, easy to communicate with, and professional. His team was highly skilled and worked in a timely manner. The cost was quite reasonable. There was a lot done in the beginning, and towards the end it slowed down a little. Keeping communication open helped with this, and in the end everything was completed with quality. The major renovations were done within the estimated timeline, and the smaller odds and ends were done within a few weeks after the expected finish. Working with everyone from
Chicago Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
was the best part of the entire renovation process.
