Tips for hiring a Chicago landscaper

Landscaping is a big part of owning a home. However, many projects require specific permission from local and state authorities before ground can be broken. It’s important to follow these tips when planning a new project to spruce up your yard.

Get permission. For many homeowners, including those living in housing communities, it may be necessary to receive permission prior to starting a new project. Many homeowner associations have strict guidelines on what residents can do to change their property. If those rules are violated, homeowners might find themselves embroiled in a lengthy dispute. To avoid potential conflicts, make sure your project is approved by the association board beforehand.

Ask about certification. Illinois landscapers do not need to be licensed but a landscape architect does. Smaller projects like mulching and planting are perfect for a general landscaper, but larger, more complex jobs that require designs should be handled by a landscape architect. Homeowners who hire a licensed landscape architect also have the added recourse of filing a complaint with the state if things don’t go to plan. Licensing information can be found on Angie’s List or by checking the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

Be mindful of permits. Landscapers should be able to present various permits, depending upon the scope of the project. Steer clear of penalties and fines by checking with the local buildings department before starting a project, such as the construction of a patio with a fire pit. Large landscaping projects usually require a permit. The City of Chicago’s Buildings Department can guide homeowners in securing approval and understanding application fees.

Check referrals and reviews. It is always advisable to check references or reviews before hiring a contractor for a job. Make sure the prospective landscaper has completed a project with a similar design to the one you envision.
