This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

?
Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Your basic rights and protections under law are probably outlined by your state and city's laws. In most states, the easiest way to look up your basic rights and privelges as a consumer would be to visit your state's attorney general website - you can usually find lots of great tips to protect yourself as a consumer there, too. Here's the National Association of Attorneys General's national listing, which includes a link to each state's attorney general website: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Beyond those basic rights under the law, your expectations of a contractor during, on and after the completion of a job should be explicitly outlined in the estimate and contract. Although it can be a pain in the butt, ALWAYS read the estimate and/or contract before sign it! I cannot stress this enough - frequently the cause of someone's negative experiences with a contractor can be traced back to too few details in the contract.

We've covered contracts, and what you should expect to see in them, here: http://www.angieslist.com/contractor/signing-a-contract.htm

Good luck!

Three years ago we engaged a well-known design-build firm from the Chicago suburbs to do a major kitchen and butler pantry renovation for our 1914 house in Chicago. While the design work was good, we were very disappointed with the construction:
both the quality of the materials and the quality of workmanship were mediocre at best, and some aspects were clearly sub-standard. Overall the quality of the construction for our kitchen project was not in line with the high-end price. Thus when we decided to do a major renovation of our two second-floor bathrooms and main floor powder room, I knew we needed to look elsewhere in order to obtain satisfactory results.
After interviewing several design companies, I hired Habitar Design for the initial design phases of the project, and then decided to engage the related company,
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
, to do the actual renovation work. While there were a few minor bumps in the road – not surprisingly, since the project was both extensive and complicated, and our house is almost 100 years old – in all we were extremely pleased with the quality of work provided by
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
. The company owner,
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
, served as project manager for much of our project. His expertise, persistence, patience, and strategic advice all served to ensure a positive outcome.
Our bathroom renovation project was extensive: it started with asbestos abatement from the old water pipes and heating pipes in the basement, continued with replacement the old galvanized water lines with new copper pipes throughout, and involved the moving of piping and fixtures in one upstairs bathroom as well as the complete gutting of all three spaces. One of the bathrooms still had the original 1914 fixtures, as well as the original tile floor that was embedded in cement: so even the demolition was
complicated. The project necessitated a fair number of sub-contractors to do some of the specialized work, but much of the project was completed by a regular crew of workers from
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
. In all, the workers from Stratagem were meticulous about planning, measuring, and executing every aspect of the construction and installation, and their results were excellent. They were also pleasant, neat, and conscientious. It was clear that Stratagem’s construction crew have high standards, and take pride in their work.
Of particular merit were several aspects of the renovation: the installation of tile (both ceramic and marble), the construction of a
furniture-quality vanity and additional cabinetry, and the installation of trim in both bathrooms. The tiling was particularly complicated: diamond-shaped tiles in the bathtub surround of one bathroom; tiled ceiling arches above the bathtub and above a walk-in shower in the other bathroom; marble tile, marble accent pieces, baseboard, and wainscot trim in one room; and patterned marble floor with outline trim in both bathrooms. In all cases, the installation of tile was excellent: carefully planned, carefully balanced, and meticulously installed. Both upstairs bathrooms feature stained glass windows, and the tiling had to be
placed to harmonize symmetrically with the window openings (as well as with the proportions of the room). We are very pleased with the results.
In addition, the cabinetry work that
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
provides is outstanding. They build cabinets in their own dedicated shop: thus the sizes, designs, and materials are all custom. They use high quality wood for the cabinet boxes, doors, and shelves, and the craftsmanship is excellent. The installation of the cabinetry, both in the bathrooms and in the related upstairs laundry room, was likewise excellent, as was the installation of trim around ceilings, doorways, and wainscot panels.
Our bathroom project extended into renovation of some portions of the first floor of our house, and thus involved additional subcontractors: for ceiling replacement, floor sanding and refinishing, electrical installation, and so forth. (One of the best
finds was faux painter
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
Minnihan – Minnihan Painting – who does beautiful work!) Stratagem coordinated all of these aspects – as well as the moving and temporary storage of our first floor furniture so the project could be accomplished. While overall the project took considerably longer than had originally been estimated, everything was ultimately accomplished, and most
aspects of the work meet or exceed my own high expectations.
One more plus: when unexpected problems cropped up – such as when the workers encountered a cast iron pipe in the wall that they didn’t anticipate, or when the marble tile that was shipped didn’t remotely match the approved sample –
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
was willing and able to find a solution. He was persistent, resourceful, and ultimately successful in solving the problem in a satisfactory way. In addition, he was thorough in his planning and pricing of the project, and fair in making any adjustments that were necessary.
I highly recommend
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and the related firm, Habitar Design, for those who want high-quality work.

After interviewing a considerable number of designers and design-build firms in the Chicago metropolitan area, I engaged
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
to plan the major renovation of two full bathrooms and a powder room in our 1914, mid-size house in
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
Park. From the beginning, I knew this would be a comprehensive project – i.e., a total gut rehab, including relocation of some fixtures – and that I wanted the two bathrooms to be period-appropriate and the powder room more eclectic.
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
assigned designer
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
Sponholtz, who had extensive experience working with older homes, to our project.
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
’s work was superb in every way. I was delighted both with the process and with the result.
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
himself has exquisite taste, a superb sense of proportion, an extensive knowledge of material / fixture options, and a true creative flair. He was able to re-think the layout of our one “problem bathroom” upstairs, and the resultant design made the small space both more functional and more attractive. He was able to incorporate a lot of my own requests for particular details: diamond-shaped ceramic tile on the bathtub surround in one bathroom; a walk-in shower as well as a built-in, furniture-style vanity (with side towers) in the other; ceiling arches above the bathtub and shower in both bathrooms; and my request for an eclectic “Asian feel” in the small, main floor powder room. In each of the designs,
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
demonstrated considerable skill for working out exacting proportions, so that everything both balances and fits in these comparatively small spaces (including wainscoting panels in one bathroom, marble tile and trim in the other). His choice of ceiling molding and trim molding was likewise “just right”, both within the bathrooms and to harmonize with the rest of our house. His design for our eclectic powder room was outstanding: he incorporated a
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
sink on a floating vanity shelf, a
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
screen on the window, and pebble tile on a central portion of the floor to create a powder room that is both stunning and distinctive.
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
also accompanied me on several shopping trips to select tile and fixtures for the project. He guided me on choices of materials and colors, while recognizing and respecting that I had fairly well-defined preferences already. He was patient throughout the (long) process, and was willing to
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
further when necessary – and to steer me away from any crazy ideas that popped up along the way. When the bathroom renovation project mushroomed into renovating the living room and front foyer as well,
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
was able to pick ceiling molding, baseboard, and mantel trim that enhances the proportions of the rooms, and that look beautiful.
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
also assigned a second designer to work out a new layout for our upstairs laundry room: another extension of the bathroom project, which seemed sensible to do at the same time. While this was a much simpler project than the bathroom renovation, designer
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
did an excellent job of working out the new layout for the room, as well as determining the proportions for the new cabinetry we decided to install. She also guided me in the choice of materials (floor tile, cabinet style, wood finish,
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
, and light fixtures), and created a space that is eminently functional as well as attractive.
In all, I was extremely pleased with the design services and recommendations of
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
. (I wish that I had engaged them three years earlier, when we did a major kitchen and butler pantry renovation with a well-known design-build firm from the Chicago suburbs.) Because I was so pleased with the design phase of the bathroom project, we decided to engage the related company, Stratagem Construction, to do the actual renovation work. I have provided a separate (and also favorable!) review for
that company.

Everything was positive at the start until later in the project. They had to start late because of a blizzard, but it still took upward to 3 months to finish everything. They weren't contacting me about finishing the job. I had to call them multiple times to get the job finished. They gave me a pretty good deal, but it was just a confusing experience. There was an overall lack of communication between me and the company and the company and the workers. The workers were good guys, it was just the communication.

The renovation ended with the contractor walking off the job. The initial time frame for completion was 8 - 10 weeks; and ended with the walk-out after 20 weeks. The cost for priming and painting 4 rooms, 2 bath and the kitchen, 1700 SF, was $5000.00. There were numerous errors and oversights (10+) due to the General Contractor's failure to retain details and specifics. In response, there was always someone or something or some product to blame; and any disputes were responded to with an excuse based on a poorly worded contract. Some examples: In the first month of renovation and demolition, the team and the General Contractor
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
disconnected the cable TV and internet access the entire side of the 39 floor condo by disconnecting it and never re-connecting it, for four days. I do not believe they ever took responsibility for that with the building management, but I can't be sure.
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
forced me to turn on telephone, internet and cable TV service "just to see if it works" and I had to pay for months of service I would never use. It was an unnecessary financial
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and request on me as the customer. He did not care. He wanted it. In the Master Bedroom, I was told I could provide a ceiling fan and light for installation. The General Contractor overlooked the fact that in that room, there is no electrical access in that ceiling AFTER I purchased the fan. His response was, "ooops....things always come up when you are renovating a condo!" The General Contractor transposed tiling dimensions for my showers, causing me to
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
the fixtures I had carefully chosen and losing function in one bathroom due to the change. His response was, "ooops...." His solution was for me to settle for the fixtures that were not even my second or third choices, but only satisfactory ones, or wait six+ weeks for new tiles. In the Master Bathroom, the contractor left the entire sink faucets and plumbing uninstalled saying, "It doesn't fit..." and blaming the countertop fabricator. They were installed without any problem at all the very next day. They fit. They work. They look great. The contractor didn't do it and gave a very poor excuse for not doing it as contracted. Another issue with the tile was in the Guest Bathroom, where I wanted a tile backsplash. Because the tile would not look good next to the cheap, 0.49 outlet cover,
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
refused to put the tiles in. When I suggested that I would simply swap the cheap cover for a nice one that goes with the tiles, he had no reply. The tiling was never done.

In the kitchen, a backsplash was put up prior to installing
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
lights, causing the worker to punch a hole in the tile, then cover it up with a cheap, 0.39 cover. The
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
lights were never put in and the backsplash was ruined in my opinion. I was also left with a switch and outlet that leads to NOTHING. His excuse was, "well it's not in the contract........" There was a delay of over 5 weeks for delivery of a standard 4" x 4" cobalt blue tile due to the General Contractor's poor communication and follow up with his "connection" for tiles. This caused a delay in completion of the renovation of over 6 weeks. The general Contractor and his team were unable produce any wood work or carpentry that was of furniture grade; for example, a cabinet requiring staining and veneer was ignored and overlooked for the entire project. It was never done by the team. Another example was stating they could build a closet organizer. When the time came, what was offered was laminate and paint; low-grade, industrial work more suitable for a dormitory or office than a luxury home. I chose not to have them build it. Another example was the team's inability to build cabinets for a "built-in" wall unit in the living room. Cabinets had to be ordered at the last possible moment, causing additional delays in completing the work. A prime example of their inability to do carpentry or wood work is an issue we had over a
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
Bed building and installation. After promising for months to add it to the contract, the General Contractor chose not to attempt this DIY project that required no special wood working tools or skills. It was explained to me that the team did not have the tools or skill to complete the
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
Bed. This is despite them having the kit and Step-By-Step instructions and telephone support if they needed it. The kit for the
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
Bed also came with a DVD that the General Contractor never reviewed. It was unclear why they chose not to even try. The boundaries I set for communication to allow me to work without interruptions and trouble-shooting issues with
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
were NEVER respected. I was called, texted and repeatedly e mailed incessantly during my work hours throughout the entire project. His disrespect for my boundaries was very challenging. I set aside one entire work day each week for four months, not working, to be available, and this was still not enough, and I feel my efforts felt like a waste. In the final month of the renovation prior to the contractor walking off the job, the General Contractor and the customer (me) did not communicate directly due to multiple, unresolved issues that arose during installation of various products. The final payment had to be reduced by the cost required for professional cleaning. Upon walking out and stating, "This place is clean.", a professional, post-renovation cleaning team had to be hired, using special cleaning equipment for industrial debris and dirt.

We are renting out our condo and needed what
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
calls a bathroom tuneup. The grout and caulking was in bad shape with mold that we and professional cleaners couldn't remove, plus it needed to be redone. He and his team did an amazing job. All the mold is gone and he re-did the caulk which really needed it. At some point we will try to sell the condo and will ask him back to redo the grout for the bathroom and kitchen tile flooring. They were professional and able to work around the fact that the bathroom walls had just been repainted, it's not a large bathroom so was also impressed they didn't smudge the new paint.

This is the second time we've used
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
since finding him on Angie's List, and he's great. The first time he removed my pedestal sinks and a tall cabinet and installed a double vanity in my upstairs bathroom, and everything went really perfectly. I had bought his $199 deal and he worked with us to stay within the 6 hours on the deal, which was really nice of him considering he could have made more money if he had gone over the 6 hours. He also gave me some good advice and hung around to chat about other remodeling questions I had, and he gave me enough confidence to ask him back for some more work.
This time, he had to move a little bit of plumbing to get the new, larger disposal in and he even pointed out how a previous plumber had done something really dumb when re-plumbing in the past.
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
fixed it "the right way", which is always a relief when you're dealing with water.
I'll be having
Chicago Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
back to do some major kitchen cabinet work soon, and I feel like at this point he's my go-to kitchen and bath guy. It's a real comfort to have had multiple good experiences with someone. He's great!
