Bicycle Buying And Repair Reviews in Chicago

I stopped in the service department to have a gear cable fixed (on a bike I bought there.) 3 guys in plain sight were working on bikes. We could all see each other & there weren't any other customers in the service area : Just me standing there with my bike.1 minute went by and nothing happened. 2 minutes went by. Still, none of the 3 acknowledged my presence, didn't say "we'll be with you in a minute" or anything like that. Then one of the 3 disappeared into the rear of the service area. Still nothing. So I left.I don't know if these guys had just gotten into a fight with each other before I got there, or maybe their boss just yelled at them or something else which might cause such odd/weird behavior. It's a problem though for the business.
I'm sorry I wasted my time by going in to
today. I will go to another bike repair place to have my bike fixed. And why would I want to go to
when it's time to get a new bike? I'll go somewhere else for that too.

I called on Monday and they told me I could just bring the bike's in that afternoon. We dropped the bike's off and talked to the repair person about what needed to be done. They said they would call if extra work needed to be done and that we could pick-up our bike's on Wednesday. We came back on Wednesday and the bike's were ready and wiped clean.

Bicycle Buying And Repair reviews in Chicago

This seems, on the outside, like a bike shop for the serious bicyclist, and surely it is to the Lycra set. But as ordinary commuter/older/get-around-town bike riders, we have been repeatedly delighted wtih their care, and lack of any if that elitist vibe found in some similar bike shops around town. Last year I had my ten-year old Specialzed partly "rebuilt" and new tires put on, and it has been like new ($258 with some serious rehab). We'd never consider going elsewhere. Thye don't try to sell you on anything, but have practical suggestions and a very customer-oriented way of going about their business.

We brought our tandem recumbent in on Monday 8/3 to replace a broken chain and get a tune up. We were told that the chain was a special order and that it would take about a week to come in and they would call us when it came in and the bike was ready to be picked up. We left the bike at the shop and waited for the call to come. On 8/13, more than a week later, we called to check on progress and the mechanic who answered the phone told us that nothing had been done to the bike, although he had noticed it hanging on the ceiling. He said the chain that needed to be replaced was not a special order, just 2 or 3 regular length chains linked together. He said that there was a note on the paperwork for our bike that said "call with quote for work." He also asked US what the mechanic who took in our bike looked like so he could find out what was going on because it was not clear on their documents or in their computer and there was no way to tell who had taken the order for the repair. We spoke with this mechanic for almost 10 minutes, again going over our request for a chain replacement AND a tune up, i.e., check the brakes, etc. When we came to pick up the bike today, the chain had been replaced, but another mechanic claimed no knowledge of our repeated requests for a full tune up. As long time

customers, we had bought several bikes from this shop and steered people in their direction. However with their very poor customer service, arrogant behavior and almost total lack of follow through, we are now looking for a reliable bike shop that is able to communicate clearly with their own staff and their customers AND do the work!

We dropped off two bikes for new tires and tubes and a tune-up on May 9, 2009. We also wanted to purchase a
Chicago Bicycle Repair Provider Name Locked
Cycle Rack for our Saturn SL2 but wanted to get one that would fit on a 2009/2010 Honda CRV, which we planned to buy in the Fall, 2009. We picked up both bikes on May 16, 2009 and the repairs were completed, averaging $120 for parts and labor, total $240. We also purchased the

personally installed the

801 Bones on our Saturn. (He had recommended a less expensive rack, primarily because it cost less.) When we left his shop we didn't know for sure whether the

would fit on a Honda CRV. That issue was resolved on Monday, May 18, 2009 when

personally called our home and left a message that the

's effort after he had already made the sale impressed us. His service was excellent and his staff were youthful friendly. We rode into the sunrise on Sunday May 17. The bikes worked very well. The repairs and tires were great.

I took my Trek 4300 mountain bike in for some repairs after putting about 600 miles on my bicycle over the past 9 months. Talk about wear and tear! My brakes didn't work anymore and my gear shifters were all messed up. So, I found this shop on Lincoln Avenue and walked in to explain what was going on. A friendly face greeted me; apparently this shop has been around for 20+ years in Lincoln Square. I asked for my bicycle back in 3 business days, and they happily obliged. I also asked for some new grips and a rear mud splash fender. They had those items in stock. In fact,

, the owner, offered me $5 off the cost of the mud splash fender because I was having my tuneup there. I came back in 3 business days and everything worked great. They even cleaned my chain, gears and replaced a brake cable. $65 for all the work, and they "threw in" the new grips. The shop is a bit dapper and seems really discombobulated, but the service here is outstanding.

. They kept my 15 year old

bike up and running and never ever tried to sell me a new one. In fact a couple of different employees talked about what a great bike it was. When it got stolen, and I took a new bike there to get some accessories added (Uptown doesn't have a large selection of new bikes for sale) the guy that helped me remembered me and my red

. They are knowledgeable, thorough, tell you what you need to do, what you could do, and what not to worry about which I find to be really helpful. Their prices are very reasonable, and they are so friendly and helpful I feel like I'm related---although I don't know many of their names. The bike shop is very invested in the neighborhood, and last I knew hired kids so they could learn the trade. You will not be disappointed.

We researched several brands and models of folding bike, and compared prices at several shops before going into
Chicago Bicycle Repair Provider Name Locked
for a test ride. We tried out a few models, and settled on one based on price and weight. We saw the same bike at other places, but
Chicago Bicycle Repair Provider Name Locked
had the best price we could find ($50 - $100 less than a couple of shops.) The people at
Chicago Bicycle Repair Provider Name Locked
were friendly, helpful and efficient, and appeared to enjoy what they do. The bike has been fantastic. It's incredibly easy to fold and take on the train. It's fun to ride, and will pay for itself in the gas money saved.

Sales people were very unhelpful. There was even a sales woman who had her dog at work. She was too busy paying attention to her dog to help me. This was very lame. I ended up getting a pair of Perlzumi's that cost over $100 that I found myself. The only reason that I did not walk out was because I was going for a 30 mile bike ride the next day and needed them. I did not buy a helmet from them since no one could help me find a ladies helmet that fit. I ended up getting one that I saw at Kozies at Sportmart for a lot less. I will definitely not go back there when I get a new bike.

I went to Licktons to have a set of wheels built. After some consultation we'd decided to have
Chicago Bicycle Repair Provider Name Locked
Wood hubs with Mavic rims built for my road bike. It's been over 15 years now and I still ride the same set of wheels. The wheels have lasted well over 4500 miles, four sets of tires and three different bikes. Simply some of the best wheels on the road and money well spent.
