Auction Service Reviews in Chicago

and her team at
were a lifeline when my father died unexpectedly, and I had to clear out and manage his house. The categories available on Angie’s List under which I’ve reviewed this company--auction services, organization—home and garage, home staging, and moving—do not come close to what this company does (which is why I’ve written such a detailed review). Although I did not need this service, they also offer downsizing and moving help for seniors.
is a national company, and
is the
manager. On her section of caringtransitions.net, she says, “We are passionate about serving our clients.” This is no marketing verbiage—she really cares.
My house was an especially challenging job for several reasons: 1) Because my father died intestate, I did not actually inherit the
house and have the legal right to work on it until a year and a half after his death, so it had been long unoccupied; 2) I live 300 miles away from the house and had to make several trips to work on it before I could even get
started; 3) My father was something of a hoarder; 4) There was no water service because the pipes had frozen and burst. There was not enough “good stuff” in the house for a conventional estate sale on location, so
arranged for online listings of the big-ticket items and successfully sold several of them. She donated what did not sell and what was usable from the rest of the contents, and
gave me a meticulously detailed receipt for my taxes. There was an enormous amount of sheer trash, and because the house was no longer occupied, there was no City trash service and it all had to be disposed of off-premises. Several times I had to arrange for repair people to come to the house, and
’s team always met them to give them access and to work with them. She periodically
sent a member of her team to check the exterior and make sure it was secure.
Finally, when my realtor advised me to sell the house as-is except for having all the ancient wall-to-wall carpeting removed,
’s team did this project. It turned out to be a ghastly mess, because the carpeting was so old that the padding underneath had rotted away and either disintegrated into powder or fused to the floor.
’s team was very careful, and the hardwood floors were revealed needing only sanding and refinishing to be beautiful. In order to do a final damp-mopping, the team brought in their own
water.
My realtor met with
to do a final walk-through to see if anything else should be done before the house was listed for sale (which
offered to do free of charge). The realtor didn’t see any other needs and told me the team had done “a magnificent job.” Originally worn and sad, the house was now a diamond in the rough. The punch line is that after the long and
difficult process of getting the house cleared out and ready to go, the house sold in just over 24 hours for 60% more than my asking price. (I also had an awesome realtor,
, whom I found on Angie’s List.)
supplied ongoing progress reports, detailed photos of the work in progress and of the final results, detailed descriptions, receipts for any supplies the team had to purchase, and any other documentation I needed. My only note about working with her is that she does not always answer emails immediately (though she does always answer), but if you need to contact her right away she always returns phone calls within a few hours.

, of Tinkerbells estate sale services was unprofessional and dishonest. At first, I thought she was just disorganized because she was late to both her meetings with me. Then she wanted to include some of the small collectible items of our estate in another estate sale at Christmas time, 2011. But, she cancelled because she "ran out of time". In January, she took those collectible items home with her to take pictures to start advertising for our estate sale which was planned for 3/10/12. Two weeks later, she called to change the date to 3/24/12 and said she had the pictures done. When I asked to see them, she made excuses as to why she couldn't just email them to me or send me the link to where they were. Two days later they appeared on her site. When I saw how sloppily our items had been pictured, I realized that she had lied when she said she had done them already. She must have realized she had been caught in a lie and then hurriedly put the pictures on her site, hoping to get them there before I looked. Why else would she have not just directed me to her site when I first asked to see them? It was at this point that I requested the cancellation of the estate sale, which was still 6 weeks in the future. I offered to pay her for the time she had spent thus far. I asked her for an invoice, a copy of the receipts for the items she claimed she'd sold, and the return of the items. We planned a final meeting. A half hour before our meeting time, she demanded I put, in a text on my phone, that I'd pay her $2000 cash or she would not meet with me to return the items. I told her I would pay her after I saw the invoice. She never came over because I wouldn't promise the cash payment. At this point in time, it has been 17 days since I cancelled the sale, and I have still not gotten our family collectibles back. I have retained a lawyer. This has been a fiasco.

They did not have their regular moving crew on that day and their substitutes were not very efficient. Three of us had to help to get the apartment cleared and it took about 5 hours. They have not had the success we hoped for in the auction, but we were happy to get rid of everything.

In preparation for sale they left minor damage that they did not acknowledge or take responsibility for. There was a major miscommunication on the part of
Chicago Auction Services Provider Name Locked
to the customer regarding the purchase of a bedroom set that resulted in a loss of that sale. She did not acknowledge or take responsibility for the mistake or offer to lower commission as a result of the lost revenue. I was deeply disappointed because I have attended her sales in the past & have admired her professionalism & people skills & thus my expectations were high. She no-showed for the final mtg. and sent the check UPS. She stated that the money she withheld ($1500) was the min. commission & explained that it was in the contract- even though it actually was not. When I told her that it was not in there, she became agitated, started insulting me, & then hung up on me.

Once we chose
Chicago Auction Services Provider Name Locked
, we executed a contract and gave
Chicago Auction Services Provider Name Locked
the keys to the house so she and her group could go in and sort through the unique. She did a great job in arranging and displaying items as well as categorizing items. She was able to tackle every problem right away (permit issues, moving items from the attic to the garage, etc.). She even let me sell quite a bit of jewelry from my mother's estate as part of the sale - she had to hire a security guard and have special display cases - but there is no way I could have made as much money on the jewelry if I were to go to a pawn shop, a local jeweler or even sell it in an on-line auction format.
Chicago Auction Services Provider Name Locked
promised to have the house cleaned out within 3 days of the sale and that she did - it is immaculate and ready to be put up on the

Big mistake. Buyer beware. Never order anything over $200 on EBAY. As far as I see it, I would never buy anything from EBAY. I won my bid and was instructed to pay for it right away, which I did with Pay
Chicago Auction Services Provider Name Locked
. The next day I received an email from EBAY saying they have taken my seller off their web site and I should cancel my payment. Well, it was too late. As soon as you pay, Pay
Chicago Auction Services Provider Name Locked
sends the money to the seller. Basically, there is very little buyer protection. Besides generic emails, there is no customer service either. They discourage phone calls. The bottom line is that they view themselves as a
Chicago Auction Services Provider Name Locked
place only. If you don't get your item, that is not their concern. Pay
Chicago Auction Services Provider Name Locked
did refund most of my money, except for a service fee (which is absurd). If they choose to deal with fraudulent sellers, they should take the hit not the buyer.

They did a nice job of photographing the items and setting up the auction pages. My only issue is I felt it took too long to get the items on eBay (about a week after I had dropped them off), and they never contacted me after the auctions were completed so I knew how much they had sold for (I had to initiate all contact with them). Overall, I was pleased with the auctioning services, and the commissions seemed reasonable, but once I dropped off the items, I had to initiate all contact to find out about payment, selling price, etc. They could have been more responsive and timely.

Very well.
Chicago Auction Services Provider Name Locked
was flexible and helpful in setting up a mutually-convenient appointment time.
They arrived exactly on-time for the scheduled appointment.
They were courteous and considerate inside the house.
After the appointment, they followed up with some very thorough questions by telephone. It was clear from these they understood my property well, and that they were seeking to prepare a highly accurate report.
The report was finished on-time - in fact, a few days early.
The estimated value was demonstrably reasonable in relation to other comparable sales.
