"You can't ask for a better builder the . He's honest. But most importantly, he has a great eye for detail and treats the finished" product as if it were his own home. I've done remodeling/building many times, but never have I come across a contractor like .

"We moved into Country Club- in January. We bought the home knowing it needed some serious updates. Our goal was to" first remodel the Master Bathroom, Paint the interior walls, and put hardwood in the Master Bathroom We had a budget in mind and did not want to go above that. So we went on Angies list to get five quotes. Some of quotes that we received were ridiculously high. Based on the fact that , owner, at Home Choice was so quick to respond...as he did throughout the project. not only came in a great price but He shared with us ideas on how we can save money. WOW...Finally an honest contractor!!! I had people with bids 300% higher than Home Choice. When we met we were very pleased how experienced he and his crew were. always respected our budget and our ideas. I work quite a bit but my wife stays at home during the day. Since 's crew would be in and out of my house without me there, I was nervous about a crew of guys i never met and hoped my Wife felt comfortable around them. To answer, crew was the best. They were the most respectful and professional and I have ever worked with. , the Floorman, was incredible and build a house from scratch. What nice guy! and were super as well. Great things is doesn't use subcontractors...THEY DO IT ALL! Our Master Bathroom came out beautiful. It is amazing how they transformed it into an oasis. Our cabinets are awesome. His quality of paint work made the inside of our house look new. and his crew could not have been better. If we saw something we didn't like, would be at our house to correct within a week. We are excited to do more projects in our new house! with will be the only on we call!!!

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

?

You gave a good description, but without seeing some photos and maybe even the space itself it would still just be a guess.

A few years ago we replaced a significant load bearing beam to raise it up a foot in the new kitchen.  It was nearly 17' long with a new LVL beam.  For us this was pretty reasonable.  The LVL was about $250.  And maybe 12-15 2x6s, to temporarily support the ceiling joists, were probably like another $75.  The labor was $800.  There was also some finish work done afterward, but that was worked into a much bigger job for the entire floor.

Technically speaking, it is likely that you need to have something spec'd out by an engineer or architect, to calculate load, etc.  I don't know your area but in most places "a mere contractor, GC, or carpenter" is probably not allowed to just rip out a load-bearing wall without someone who is qualified to do the load calculations (which will be VERY conservative.  A brand new LVL will be VASTLY stronger than it really needs to be, but it won't be expensive.  The typical contractor will be like "hey we'll sister up two 2x12s", and not really know if that'll do the trick or not.  I'm not saying that all guys are like that, but ... it is what it is.

What you are talking about is probably at least a bit more involved and I'd love to give a good estimate but it's hard to say without a better understanding of the space.

You may be looking at $1500 - $3500?  It depends on too many specifics that we just can't know without a bunch of photos, and maybe even opening up a wall or ceiling to see exactly how temporary supports could be installed, and where the permanent beam/header could be placed and properly supported.  Your span isn't all that big so if at all possible I would do it without columns - it'll be much nicer.

If I were you I would first have a quick consultation with a "professional engineer".  They are qualified to calculate load etc - and cost a lot less than a full architect.  In my experience, an engineer just wants to provide a quick, proper solution without a lot of extra BS.  My experience with architects has been less than favorable.  Too much drama and expense and he actually spec'd things wrong and my carpenter had to pick up on it.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  Good luck!!!

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

The project exceeded our expectations.

Over the last number of years, we have done many projects to repair and upgrade our 40-year old house. This was our last big project, and we have been putting it off because of how difficult and invasive we thought it would be. Since we thought there could be a considerable amount of plumbing ...More involved, we asked our plumber for a recommendation of someone he knew in the remodeling field that he thought would be good for the job. He recommended Brown, owner of . During our first meeting with , it was clear he was professional and would be good to work with. His detailed discussion on scope and what we wanted us to believe that we would have a detailed and clear understanding of what would be done, and that he was like us and did not want to leave anything to "guesswork.

The work involved an entire removal of all fixtures (including bath tub), down to studs and subfloor. Even the demo was the cleanest we have experienced. All work was done carefully, neatly and of high quality. One thing that really impressed us was 's project management. Subs were scheduled promptly, and we always were aware of when someone was coming to do work. They in return, were always met by , or briefed beforehand and knew what they were to do and what was the expectations. There were no "surprises" or unexpected items along the way. The early planning really paid off.

We highly recommend to anyone undertaking a remodeling project and wanting to ensure everything goes well and on budget.

I had just bought a condo and wanted to get some laminate flooring installed. I saw 's deal on Angie's List and that was the best price I had seen anywhere. I called first before buying the coupon to get all the details and he responded very quickly and was professional. I had a small time frame ...More between when I called him and when I was planning on moving in and he was able to accomodate me. There was an issue with areas of my floor being uneven that he took the time to inform, explain, and let me see before he did anything. Even with that he was still able to finish in the time frame that I needed.

really screwed up my weekend! I called him during the week to schedule an appointment to get an estimate to have a carport, shed, and kitchen remodel done. We set an appt for Friday afternoon and I drove back to town from (where I am working) to be home to meet with him. He never showed up. I called ...More him twice, leaving a message each time, to him to see if he was still coming. He finally called back 45 minutes later and said that he had a headache and that's why he didn't come. We rescheduled the appt for Sunday at noon and I waited until 2 pm before I finally had to leave. Even if he had shown up, late for our scheduled second appointment, I would have told him "no thank you". I need someone whom I can rely on. is obviously not that person.

When we began searching for a remodeler for our project, we knew that we wanted someone with a good reputation, a willingness to communicate openly with us, as well as recognize and respect our budget. Basically, we were looking for the right "fit" for us. We were trusting that was something we would know when we found it. We had been in ...More our house for 10 years prior to this remodel and knew exactly what we wanted to achieve in the space from a design perspective as well as materials used. We interviewed several well known remodeling companies as well as one known company. We presented each of them with our very detailed wish list as well as our ideal budget. Several companies blatantly disregarded our wish list and/or budget but not . We met with (Jr) and . They listened to all that we had to say, took notes and then asked us "What is most important to you?" We responded by telling them communication, first and foremost. We knew that when we opened up the walls to our 30+ year old home, we might discover some more work, we just wanted to know about it, all of it! We had a cabinet maker all lined up and they were willing to work with him because it was important to us. We felt extremely at ease with the meeting and quote we received from . Initially, we decided to go with a friend of our cabinet maker to do the job and informed that we would not be using them. As the start date of our project approached, we were growing very uneasy and realized that we had made a huge mistake not choosing . We called back and asked him to requote the job and he graciously agreed to (at this point, about 6 months had elapsed from our initial visit). We signed the contract and about 3 months later began the work. Every aspect of our experience with far exceeded all of our expectations, from their communication with us, to their respect for our home, to our lead carpenter , to helping us choose materials that kept us on budget not to mention the finished project! This was the first time we had ever dealt with a contractor at this level of involvement. All we had ever heard were horror stories. Nothing could be further from our experience. We won't be bothering with other quotes on our next project. will be the only call we make. The only delays we encountered in this project were from the two contractors that WE brought to the table (cabinets and granite). even helped get these issues resolved for us, when it wasn't there battle to fight. The only overages we experienced were from work that we asked them to do as "add ons" that weren't on the initial contract. They finished on time AND on budget! Amazing experience! Our new kitchen and laundry room are beautiful and are so much more user friendly! was the perfect fit for us and our project!

I first contacted over 3 years ago when I was considering a master bathroom remodel. I did not end up doing that project at all but was VERY impressed with from our meeting so I kept them in the file for ‘one day'. Well, that 'one day' arrived when we realized that we needed alternative ...More access to our home from the pool for our children and their friends. The kids were having to enter through the screened porch and go across the kitchen to get to the bathroom...all in their wet bathing suits. was the only company I contacted about this project because I just knew they were all that we would need to get the job done. and Almond worked for weeks coming up with design possibilities for our new space. They were always so helpful and worked with us at every turn to be sure that the design we came up with would satisfy all of our needs as well as keep within a budget. worked through many revisions with me to be sure we had just the right drawers, shelves and storage for our needs. She even measured my laundry detergent containers to be sure they'd fit on the shelves. She came with me to pick out tile and hardware. We exchanged many an email to be sure we got just the right sink and faucet for the new laundry room. Having walk me through all of the decisions that had to be made was invaluable. The work was outlined in a detailed plan which provided a time line for each phase of the project. My biggest concern was keeping my washer a dryer functioning during the project since I have 3 young children. I am happy to report, that I did not even a single day without my machines. The crew, which included a project coordinator, a lead carpenter, and two other carpenters were by far the most skilled and professional craftsman I have EVER had work in my home. In addition to the folks who work for , the subs that they use for electrical and plumbing are also the best I have ever experienced. The crew went above a beyond in every aspect of their work. Before they left each day, the work area was cleaned and made usable so that I could continue to do laundry. The also kept the outside of my home clean by sweeping and straightening up daily before they left. I could go on and on about the quality of these men…their work and their work ethic is beyond reproach. It was also very nice to know that was never more than a phone call away and he was always on the job site inspecting a couple of times per week. The job was done on time and we could not be more pleased with the results. During the design process, we also included a new design for our kitchen. When we are ready to do that project, there is no doubt in my mind that will be doing the job!

All work was done as quoted. Installer was very punctual and worked efficiently to complete project. Coverings were put down to protect other areas that were traveled over. Everything appears to be working well and we haven't experienced any problems.

Sr. was fantastic! We did a major remodel and actually moved out for 5 months. We gutted all the bathrooms, enlarged interior doorways, crown moulding installed all over the house, built a huge storage closet in bonus room, new hardwood floors almost everywhere. We took one of our downstairs bedrooms and built a beautiful ...More office with custom cabinets ,new floor in laundry room and redid our screened porch. I have nothing but fabulous things to say about this experience. His entire crew could not have been more talented, professional and we all got along so well. At the beginning , gives you a complete timeline of what should happen each week. It was updated usually about every 2 weeks and he literally met the timeline and was finished at least 1 or 2 weeks early. We didn't move back in for a couple of weeks so our floors could cure. The only problem we ran into was a support beam was missing and we got an engineer to look at it and we put in the new beam and things moved along. My husband and I and decided what needed to be done and we did it! I strongly recommend everyone talking to him if you are thinking of a remodel of any size. You absolutely cannot go wrong, Terrific people and we LOVE our house.
