4 unusual pregnancy symptoms

We all know about missed periods, nausea and cravings, but there are some other symptoms that may distract you from the joy of your pregnancy. Fortunately, many of these conditions are relieved with the birth of the baby. Here are some pregnancy symptoms:

  • Abdominal cramping: You may experience some light cramping early in the pregnancy as the embryo implants itself into the lining of the uterus. This can be especially deceptive when it occurs close to the time a woman expects to menstruate. Though mild discomfort is normal, severe pain is not and can indicate a problem, warns the March of Dimes. If in doubt, consult your physician.
  • Spider veins: You may become aware of an increase in reddish blood vessels, especially on the face, neck, upper chest, and arms as your body adapts to the need for increased blood flow throughout the body. This may be hereditary, but for some, increased vitamin C may minimize this symptom, according to the American Pregnancy Association.
  • Nasal congestion or nosebleed: Higher levels of estrogen and progesterone lead to an increase in blood flow to mucous membranes, which soften membranes. The March of Dimes recommends reducing dryness with a humidifier, warm shower and warm compress.
  • Metallic taste: The change in hormones may lead to an unpleasant sensation also known as dysgeusia. Though it usually related to the change in hormones, it can be a sign of infection, so you should seek prompt medical attention.
  • Leg cramps: The pressure of a growing baby on nerves and blood vessels may lead to painful cramping. Redirection of calcium can also contribute to the discomfort. Your doctor may be able to prescribe or recommend a supplement to help.

Be sure to confirm your condition with your doctor, and consult your doctor to make sure your plan of action is safe for you and your baby.
