"S & I Construction did an outstanding job for a great price. Before starting Ayal gave me a very detailed explanation of what he thought the scope of work would" need to include in order to achieve the results I wanted, and he quoted very reasonable pricing. Mid-way through the project I was so pleased with how things were going that I asked him to stay on and do more than I had previously planned. He and his team arrived extremely early and incredibly promptly each morning and worked tirelessly until very late each evening, and they were extremely professional and pleasant to be around throughout the week-long job. At the end of the job there was no hassle about the bill - he stuck to the exact quote he had given me. He and his team went above and beyond to provide me with the highest quality service and outcome. I was thoroughly impressed with their work ethic, skill set and pricing, and as a result I highly recommend Ayal and S & I Construction. Next time I need home repair or construction help I will certainly use them again.

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Your basic rights and protections under law are probably outlined by your state and city's laws. In most states, the easiest way to look up your basic rights and privelges as a consumer would be to visit your state's attorney general website - you can usually find lots of great tips to protect yourself as a consumer there, too. Here's the National Association of Attorneys General's national listing, which includes a link to each state's attorney general website: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Beyond those basic rights under the law, your expectations of a contractor during, on and after the completion of a job should be explicitly outlined in the estimate and contract. Although it can be a pain in the butt, ALWAYS read the estimate and/or contract before sign it! I cannot stress this enough - frequently the cause of someone's negative experiences with a contractor can be traced back to too few details in the contract.

We've covered contracts, and what you should expect to see in them, here: http://www.angieslist.com/contractor/signing-a-contract.htm

Good luck!

We live in a long, narrow brownstone in Boston. Typical of other small brownstones, our kitchen has been carved out of a hallway creating a galley type space. When we moved in, the cabinets were a white laminate, the refrigerator had been placed close to the living room and storage was limited. From the first minute I met
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
, I liked her style which is warm and friendly yet very professional. After coming to view our space,
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
began to work with me on a redesign for the kitchen. We both felt moving the refrigerator to the far end of the space, not readily viewed from the living room was preferable. She suggested a long (84 inch), series of cabinets with a granite counter top on the wall opposite the sink and appliances. This had three functions: 1) seating for two; 2) a food prep counter top; and, 3)additional storage. It has proven to be a stroke of genius!
I had definite ideas for the kitchen and when
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
disagreed with my ideas, she tactfully voiced her opinion but let me decide. I opted for a built-in oven for more elegance while she suggested a slide in unit. I insisted on a narrow pull-out high "pantry" unit to take advantage of the space between a refrigerator door and a fixed wall.
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
worked to find a perfect unit for that space.
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
suggested open display niches for some of our bowls and pitchers and suggested off setting the glass front cabinets over the sink for more visual interest. Many friends have commented on how much they like both of these touches.
The cabinets were installed by a general contractor but needed a little fine tuning after installation.
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
, the owner of Prestige, detailed a fabulous carpenter to provide this service.
All in all, working with Prestige was wonderful. We have a stunning kitchen with more storage than we ever dreamed possible.

Everything went well until I had a problem with my cabinets and
dishwasher. I had to reschedule the countertop installation at the last
minute, adjust my cabinets, get a new template made and have them cut
an extension piece. This was certainly not their fault (someone
improperly installed an appliance and we had to adjust the cabinets to
fix it) and they were very friendly and worked with me on this. However,
they weren't clear about the cost of the extension piece and sent me a
last minute bill (not even an invoice, just an informal email asking for
an extra $280), urging me to confirm quickly otherwise the installation
would be further delayed. I had already paid an extra $260 for the
second template and felt surprised by this additional cost, which was
for a 1" thick piece of granite to extend the counter and fill a gap.
After trying to contact them twice, with no success, I replied to the
email expressing my dismay at the surprise and lack of professionalism
in their customer service. I felt that they should have a) prepared me
for additional expenses at the beginning and included an invoice and b)
called me rather than emailed if it was urgent. I explained that I
would pay the money but felt "backed into a corner" as it was all so
last minute, and that I would not want to use them for another unit as I
had planned. Their response was a phone call from the shop manager who
insulted me over the phone, told me I was treating my order like
"ordering a pizza" and proceeded to shout at me that this was all my
fault because of the cabinet issue and I had no right to be upset. I
have never been treated with such disrespect by any company where I have
been a customer. After, complaining about the shop managers behavior, I
was given a discount of $130 and an apology. I felt somewhat satisfied
with this and moved forward, even considering giving them another
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
for another apartment I was renovating.
I also apologized to
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
(who was very nice about the whole thing) for reacting so quickly to the
billing issue, as I don't like being a customer who is unwilling to
empathize with the stress of running a business and the subsequent possibility for
mistakes. That said, when they
finally installed the countertop it looked great... BUT, the installer damaged my sink by
attempting to make it fit into a hole that was cut too small (it was the same sink that was installed during the original template and I did not change sinks in the interim). In the
end, I had to buy a new sink (with same dimensions) and have my contractor enlarge the hole
with a grinder by 1/2" on two sides to make it fit. That was the last
straw for me and I decided not to use them again. After my experience
speaking with the shop manager on the phone, I decided it was best to
leave it be and not complain about the undersized sink opening. Damage
done, it looks and works fine now, moving on.

Update:
I would have given them a B for the problem with the sink opening alone or a B or C for the shop manager's behavior alone, but the combined issues were a lot to deal with. I would like to think that my experience was unusual and will give them a C, only because I want to ensure that I'm being fair.

Excellent work, Great pricing & Extremely professional.... I've used Junior and his team on multiple projects that included; complete remodels, kitchens, baths, painting, flooring etc (my own home & income properties). Basically I've gotten to the point where if I need anything I give Junior a call to do the work. It's not always the biggest jobs (sometimes it is!) but if I give him a call he's always right there. Before I started working with him, I was always concerned about how responsive/trustworthy a contractor would be. After working with these guys for a few years I don't have that concern anymore. Junior is my go to guy.
My last project was a complete gut and refinish a decent size kitchen. As usual the work was completed on time, on budget and the fit & finish was great. They really walk you through what is going to happen and what you should expect. If something does come up they're very proactive/straight forward about what the issue is and give you a few ways to fix it. They definitely give you the feeling that you are part of a team and everyone is going in the same direction.
I don't have enough good things to say about Junior and the team. I look forward to working with these guys in the future and highly recommend them to anyone!!!!

We (my fiancé and I) hired
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
(BBC) to complete a kitchen island and small remodel project in our Boston condo. We consulted with several contractors and ultimately settled on BBC due to the competitive price, references, and availability. We worked with
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and his team throughout the duration of the project. We are very happy with the outcome.

The Quote & Final Price. Of those we contacted, BBC took the least amount of time to get us a quote. The quote was also the most detailed of the ones we received.
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
included renderings of the island remodel and surrounding space as well as a detailed breakdown of materials and labor. The quoted price was very competitive — it was among the lowest. BBC completed the project for the quoted price in spite of a few unexpected complications we encountered along the way.

Quality of work. We are extremely happy with the quality of the work performed. We were very up front about certain key requirements going into the project and
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
did a very good job making sure to adhere to them. For example, we wanted to make sure the island cabinetry matched our older, discontinued, cabinetry.
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
was able to match our own cabinets very closely without impacting the price. We also had a number of other very specific requirements regarding cabinetry arrangement and
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
stuck to it perfectly. We got what we asked for.

Communication and experience.
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and his crew kept the dialogue going throughout the project. We spoke regularly via telephone, email, and text message. They listened to our questions and concerns along the way and made adjustments based on our input. They were very good at explaining when certain things made sense and when they didn’t.
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and his team were not afraid to speak up when they thought their input would lead to a better result. For example,
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and one of his team members (
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
) had some suggestions about how to cut the granite to wrap around some steam pipes adjacent to the island. This resulted in a much better finished appearance and the additional cost was negligible. We are glad we listened to their suggestions as the final result is better than we had expected.

We had a great experience with BBC and would use them again. We recommend them for anyone considering any type of project for their home.

Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
's estimate was higher than others', and the reviews we read here and on Yelp indicated that
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
can be easily insulted and quirky, but we picked them anyway because their schedule met our needs,
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
seemed to have a good eye for design, and because the carpenter (
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
) and plasterer (
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
) got good reviews for quality. I can confirm that
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
does have an eye for design and project planning, and that
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
's rough carpentry and
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
's plastering work is very good. However, I would strongly caution anyone against hiring this company for crown molding, or probably any other kind of finish carpentry, and I would generally caution anyone against working with
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
unless you get all of your expectations about the quality of the work committed to on paper. Ask lots of questions about the specific skill set of the crew for each bit of work, and exactly what the finished results will look like, and what they will do if things don't end up that way. Buyer beware.

I went to the project site several times to inspect progress. The rough carpentry and plastering were done nicely. On my third trip, to see the freshly installed crown molding, I could see that it had not been mitered at the correct
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
in several corners, such that the edges lined up unevenly. This left a "lip" in some cases where one
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
extended past another, and a "gap" in other cases where some or all of the
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
didn't meet the
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
of the neighboring piece. In still other cases where the crown molding was just supposed to stop rather than wrap around a corner, there was a gap between the "return" piece and the wall. Finally, along the length of the crown molding, there was a clearly visible gap where the crown molding meets the wall, in some places as much as 1/8"-1/4" wide, which was very visible from most vantage points.

I called
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
as soon as I saw these issues and he assured me that this was just the roughing-in step, and that they had a whole second day reserved to fix up everything with caulk (tubes of DAP). I expressed concern that some of the gaps seemed rather large to fix with caulk, and that I didn't understand how mismatched edges (particularly protruding corners) were going to be fixed with caulk and leave a smooth, paintable surface. He assured me it would produce a good result. That evening after work I researched crown molding installation issues and learned that caulk is indeed a standard solution to very small cracks, but that professional-grade work doesn't require a lot of caulk, especially not in corners, where the two mitered edges are supposed to line up without a big gap or a lip. I wrote
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
an email explaining my concerns, and in the morning we talked on the phone and agreed to meet at the project site.

This is the point in our project where
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
started to exhibit seriously unprofessional behavior. When I got there, he was removing masking tape from the floor and first just ignored me while I crouched next to him saying hello. (Update 11/24 - the tape appears to have permanently marred the floor in that one location, which I didn't notice until two days later.) I started walking around the rooms inspecting the crown molding and
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
joined me after a few minutes. We agreed to walk the whole apartment together. Many of the small gaps between the lower
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
of the crown molding and the wall had been effectively sealed with caulk, but there were still small gaps along some of the seams, one whole room hadn't been addressed at all, and the largest gap (a 1/4" gap about 2 feet long) was still just as wide. I mentioned that my online research said that for gaps this large, one needs to use plaster to re-grade the wall to meet the molding.
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
didn't respond. As we walked through the apartment, he trailed sullenly behind me by several feet, sometimes looking at his feet or out the window as I pointed at various spots, calmly pointing out mismatched edges. I said some were so mismatched that they might need to be recut if it's not possible to make the mismatch disappear with caulking and patching.
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
said nothing. We got done walking the whole apartment and then we were interrupted by a phone call I'd been waiting on. When I tried to resume the conversation,
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
said they all needed to get to work, and didn't I have to get to work, too? I told him yes, but that I wanted to know what his thoughts were on the various issues I'd pointed out. He said curtly that they would spend some time that day fixing those spots as I wanted, in addition to re-placing the doorbell ringer back where it goes (which had left an exposed hole in the wall), and cleaning up the project site. Then he opened the door for me to leave. Seriously unprofessional. Later in the day he called and said they were done, that the only thing left for them to do was to install some folding closet doors that hadn't arrived yet.

The next morning I went to the project site again, and noticed a few improvements, several remaining deficiencies, and a few ADDITIONAL issues. Along the length of the crown molding, most of the thin gaps had been effectively filled with smooth caulk, with no leakage onto the adjacent wall. The 1/4" gap was filled with caulk, too, and it didn't look good. A couple of the corners looked better, but many did not. He said they had used plaster and sanding to re-work the mis-matched corners, but I saw no evidence of this, just caulking and clear glue. Indeed, several corners looked WORSE than the day before because there were now big globs of plasticky caulking on the surface of the crown molding, and even smeared on the walls below in several spots. The doorbell ringer had not been moved back into place, so there was a clearly visible hole in the wall above my front door.

I also noticed two things that had escaped my attention previously: some newly installed baseboards produced very poorly matched edges, such that both have a very visible "lip" of wood protruding past the adjacent piece; and a bit of trim that was supposed to be installed around the top of a support column was missing. So I called
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
again, and told him that some things definitely looked better, but also explained the issues I was still seeing. I started talking about the crown molding, and he flatly stated that they are "DONE dealing with the crown molding." I said it's not done, though. He said they're "DONE with it!" and that I'll "have to hire someone else" if I want it fixed any further. I told him I can't pay him his last installment if the work isn't done, and he said fine, and that he would return the spare keys he still had. I sent him a follow-up email with photos showing examples of the problems I was still seeing with the crown molding, and also detailed the other few items that still needed to be done (the folding closet doors, the doorbell, the column trim, and removal of a small pile of construction debris from my back porch) and said that, independent ofthe crown molding issue, these items needed to be done or I would consider him in breach of contract. I also wrote and posted the first version of this review, ending with "I hope to update this later with a more positive outcome."

The next day I'd arranged to start painting with two friends - I planned to start with the ceilings in the hope that the crown molding issue might yet be resolved.
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
emailed and called to say that
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
would be back to deal with the four items I'd emailed him about. I said fine.
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
showed up and started working on those items and our little painting crew stayed out of his way. An hour or so later,
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
showed up and was suddenly civil, even cordial, asking if we might talk privately somewhere. He asked if he might hear my concerns again. This time he listened. He asked clarifying questions. He got up on a step ladder to look closely at what I was talking about. Ultimately he decided to send
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
on to the next job while he,
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
, stayed behind to give it a last shot with the crown molding, using caulk and Patch-n-Paint. It was like talking to a completely different person.

Admittedly, at that point I was so concerned that I'd be left with crappy crown molding that I ratcheted down my expectations. I didn't bring up the two-foot-long, 1/4" gap between one wall and the crown molding above it, which
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
had stuffed with a thick bead of caulking and which is still clearly visible as a cheap fix. I gave up the idea that anyone was going to recut the two bits of baseboard that meet very poorly at two corners. And I was willing to accept any amount of improvement in the worst of the mismatched crown corners. To
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
's credit, he did a good job fixing almost every problematic corner, spending several hours sanding, patching, caulking, smoothing, and removing most of the glops that had been messily smeared on neighboring surfaces. (The next day I did a few more touch-ups to the crown, and still need to revisit the baseboards to see if additional patching and sanding will bring them in line, but it's WAY less work left for me to deal with than before.)

So then I had to wonder why this was all so contentious and difficult in the first place. I never raised my voice or was nasty in any way that might warrant such unprofessional behavior. It was confusing when he suddenly switched 180 back to the civil, agreeable person I'd met on day one, offering me a handshake and asking "Are we OK?" It reminded me of the time I lived with a manic depressive roommate for a year - you just never knew which person was going to be there when you got home.

I had talked to two other contractors and they were way off the hook with their pricing.
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
came in and said it was no problem and he could get that done for me. After he decided to do the work for me, I had a leak come through a skylight. I was about to leave town and I told him about it to see if he could check it out for me. He showed up the very next morning and went right up on the roof and fixed it. He said I could pay him along with my other contract later but I decided I had to pay him for it then. I'm later having him replace my kitchen cabinets because he's done such a great job. As for my back wall, he tore it down and made sure it was insulated properly and then plastered it. He even replaced my backdoor. I'm already saving as there are no drafts coming through. He also re-tiled my kitchen floor with porcelain tiles and did a beautiful job. I had a marble floor installed 8 years ago which had totally cracked up due to the wrong sub-floor. He tore it all out and put in a new sub-floor and this new tile looks absolutely beautiful. One thing about

is if he says he's going to be here, he will be here. If he can't make it then he will call ahead. He really cared for me which was incredible. I've never had a contractor who cared so much that as little mess as possible was left. We're getting together towards the end of November to discuss more work because of course he is busy. I felt so good about him being here when I wasn't here. I work evenings and he works mornings. When I would get up in the morning to run errands I would have to come back and get a few hours of sleep later and he made sure that their radios were always off when I went to sleep.

Constructions is the best and I've had my place for 18 years now. I've had three contractors in the past and I would never call them again. The gentleman

had sent to do my painting was named
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
. I had picked an outrageous orange for my accent wall. As I was leaving I wasn't sure about the color. When I got home, the color was all wrong and I had made a huge mistake. We discussed what could be done with the wall. About 5 days later
Boston Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
asked me if I had decided on the color I wanted. I said just stick with the original color. He laughed and assured me that he wanted it to be something I would like. He gave me the time to get the right color that I really wanted before he put on the second or third coat. Even when it came to the electrician everything was perfect. I decided I would have the thermostat changed in the kitchen area. When it got colder and I turned it on there was no heat. As soon as I called him and told him it wasn't working he emailed me back immediately telling me he would be contacting the electrician. He showed up quickly and fixed the problem. It was such a pleasant experience. He gets the job done and he gets it done in a timely fashion.
