"
is a super nice guy. He arrived on the dot. All his work was excellent. I bought a Big Deal for $89 for two hours. He gave me advice on other" things that I want to be done in the house: what he could on the next visit, what I could do easily myself, and what I need to have done by a specialist (window replacement). I will call him again in the spring for my next list of jobs. I would definitely recommend him to other people.

When you repair stucco, you'll often have to paint the affected side of the house. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Cory B. of Long Beach, California)
Stucco, Painting - Exterior, Handymen

It's not unusual for stucco exterior surfaces to develop cracks. Because stucco requires an individual approach, be careful about who you hire to work on it.

OK - terminology issue here. The "shower pan" is a collection liner than underlies the shower floor itself, and is designed (if built and plumbed right) to trap any leakage from the shower floor and route it to the same floor drain pipe. Example image here, copper in this case -

http://indigochreblog.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/img_0835.jpg

It sounds like your are saying the shower floor or base unit failed - likely a fiberglass or plastic shower, which commonly fail due to incomplete support under them. This can be repaired if fiberglass, but is not usually done unless just microcracking, as it is hard to find an expert - usually you have to have a car body fiberglass specialist or a surfboard repair expert do it, and the color will not match perfectly unless you get a new gelcoat over the entire base unit. Cost about $300-500, ASSUMING the material can be repaired - true fiberglass can, thermoplastic can sometimes be welded but anyone's guess how long it will last without cracking again, plastics like PVC can rarely be fixed so they will hold someone standing on them. Any sort of repair is likely to crack again, because you have done nothing to remove the cause of the cracking which is standing on a base that is not fully supported over its full extent. Some cheepo or desperate plumbers try injecting non-pressuring type expanding foam underneath to improve the support - this does a great job of supporting it but unfortunately supports mold, so starts stinking in short order as a rule.

The normal fix is to remove and replace it, because once it is out there is no sense in putting a damaged one back in for the small increment in cost. Removing it means taking the shower wall liners or the bottom row or two of tile out so you can get the new base unit into place (because they overlap it), then replacing them. So, the $3000 range indicated is indicative of this type of job, which typically runs from a very low of around $1500-2000 for an identical base unit, to more typically $3-5,000 depending on whether a shower enclosure or tile walls. Of course, when the new one is put in, it is CRITICAL that it be fully supported - this means rubbing plumbers rouge or similar marking substance on the bottom, test fitting it, and then lifting it out and checking that all the stiffener ribs and support pads made contact with the pan, and making adjusments as necessary until it has full contact, then standing in it and rocking back and forth to check for any points not making full contat and fixing them.

The $10,000 plus numbers you got must have been for entire shower replacement down to the joists and studs, and the $30,000 range number would be typical for a full bathroom remodel with new shower or shower/tub and doors and surround, wall finishes, vanity, sink, toilet, and flooring and door.

I am not sure a general handyman is the right person for the skylight.  We fix quite a few skylights that were installed by handymen and that could be the problem at its origination.  You will want a roofer for that.

As long as you are splitting the trades at that point, might as well get a flooring contractor to look at the floor once you have figured out the skylight repair/replacement equation.

I originally scheduled 4 hours of work (via a deal on angies list) to get some small tasks done around the house. Scheduling a time with them was painless.
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
called me 30 minutes before the arranged start time to tell me he would be 2 hours late due to all the snow (this is during the insane snowstorm), which is reasonable.
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
came with a helper
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
, so the 4 hour package I paid for ended up only being 2 hours with two people (they told me this ahead of time).
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
and
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
were diligent and fast, knocking out all the tasks very easily. They kept me in the loop the entire time of what they were doing and got my input at all the critical steps along the way, but not too overbearing. They had all the tools to handle the job, and provided me with better hardware to mount the TV than what the mounting kit came with.
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
is a licensed electrician, so I had him do a couple of extra tasks with identifying switches and outlets around the house, which was definitely nice.
I would definitely hire
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
and
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
again if I needed to work on small tasks around the house!

l am happy to be a repeat customer of
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
. He has a friendly, customer-oriented demeanor and approaches all projects with enthusiasm and hard work. He is glad to provide suggestions on home improvement or can follow whatever directions you give him. I particularly like his attention to detail and the reasonable rates he quotes. Would recommend to others looking for a generalist handyman. Previous projects include assembling my TV stand, wine case, mounting a bathroom cabinet, installing a coat rack, towel bar and a glass shelf.

did a great job and took the time to explain to me what he was going to do. I've had a hard time getting other contractors to come out for a small job and when they do, they try to sell me something much more expensive and complicated than what I want.
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
just did what I asked, charged much less than anyone else quoted, and seemed more than competent. It did take a little while for
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
to come out and do the work, but there wasn't much of a hurry, so I didn't mind.

and his associates were professional and intent on maintaining their quality of work in an old environment where the terrain was uneven and not square. They went out of their way to make sure that their components were balanced and true. Also, due to weather the project was delayed on a few occasions, but
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
was honest in what could and could not be done given the constraints, and was available for consultation throughout construction.
Now 6 weeks later and the door is a snug it that's well-insulated and the deck hasn't moved or shifted in rain or cold/warm weather fluctuations.
I plan on going back to
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
later in the Spring for some other work.

I was looking to have a new dryer vent installed several floors up my building, in a narrow
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
. I provided extensive detail to Dermot over the phone and in email, explaining the height of the installation (30') and providing photos of the location. I offered to have him come by and look at the installation, which he said was unnecessary. He told me he could do the work by mid-December at the latest. On December 20th, he came by to do the work.
When he arrived, he was dubious whether he could get up to the installation height, claiming "you said it was 20 feet." Looking at my original email, I very clearly said 30 feet. Eventually, he said he would give it a try.
Then he suggested that we take the existing, temporary flexible foil dryer vent and run it through the walls to get to the exterior of the house. Foil dryer venting is completely inappropriate material for permanent, through-wall vent installation. It poses a significant fire safety hazard and is quite fragile. When I expressed concern about this, I got an exasperated "what ever you want to do" from Dermot.
At this point, I told him I'd find someone else to do the job. The selection of unsafe material, the lack of preparation, and the attitude that suggested he was doing me a big favor made me uncomfortable with him working on my house.

's estimate was higher than others', and the reviews we read here and on Yelp indicated that
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
can be easily insulted and quirky, but we picked them anyway because their schedule met our needs,
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
seemed to have a good eye for design, and because the carpenter (
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
) and plasterer (
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
) got good reviews for quality. I can confirm that
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
does have an eye for design and project planning, and that
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
's rough carpentry and
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
's plastering work is very good. However, I would strongly caution anyone against hiring this company for crown molding, or probably any other kind of finish carpentry, and I would generally caution anyone against working with
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
unless you get all of your expectations about the quality of the work committed to on paper. Ask lots of questions about the specific skill set of the crew for each bit of work, and exactly what the finished results will look like, and what they will do if things don't end up that way. Buyer beware.

I went to the project site several times to inspect progress. The rough carpentry and plastering were done nicely. On my third trip, to see the freshly installed crown molding, I could see that it had not been mitered at the correct
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
in several corners, such that the edges lined up unevenly. This left a "lip" in some cases where one
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
extended past another, and a "gap" in other cases where some or all of the
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
didn't meet the
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
of the neighboring piece. In still other cases where the crown molding was just supposed to stop rather than wrap around a corner, there was a gap between the "return" piece and the wall. Finally, along the length of the crown molding, there was a clearly visible gap where the crown molding meets the wall, in some places as much as 1/8"-1/4" wide, which was very visible from most vantage points.

I called
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
as soon as I saw these issues and he assured me that this was just the roughing-in step, and that they had a whole second day reserved to fix up everything with caulk (tubes of DAP). I expressed concern that some of the gaps seemed rather large to fix with caulk, and that I didn't understand how mismatched edges (particularly protruding corners) were going to be fixed with caulk and leave a smooth, paintable surface. He assured me it would produce a good result. That evening after work I researched crown molding installation issues and learned that caulk is indeed a standard solution to very small cracks, but that professional-grade work doesn't require a lot of caulk, especially not in corners, where the two mitered edges are supposed to line up without a big gap or a lip. I wrote
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
an email explaining my concerns, and in the morning we talked on the phone and agreed to meet at the project site.

This is the point in our project where
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
started to exhibit seriously unprofessional behavior. When I got there, he was removing masking tape from the floor and first just ignored me while I crouched next to him saying hello. (Update 11/24 - the tape appears to have permanently marred the floor in that one location, which I didn't notice until two days later.) I started walking around the rooms inspecting the crown molding and
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
joined me after a few minutes. We agreed to walk the whole apartment together. Many of the small gaps between the lower
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
of the crown molding and the wall had been effectively sealed with caulk, but there were still small gaps along some of the seams, one whole room hadn't been addressed at all, and the largest gap (a 1/4" gap about 2 feet long) was still just as wide. I mentioned that my online research said that for gaps this large, one needs to use plaster to re-grade the wall to meet the molding.
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
didn't respond. As we walked through the apartment, he trailed sullenly behind me by several feet, sometimes looking at his feet or out the window as I pointed at various spots, calmly pointing out mismatched edges. I said some were so mismatched that they might need to be recut if it's not possible to make the mismatch disappear with caulking and patching.
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
said nothing. We got done walking the whole apartment and then we were interrupted by a phone call I'd been waiting on. When I tried to resume the conversation,
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
said they all needed to get to work, and didn't I have to get to work, too? I told him yes, but that I wanted to know what his thoughts were on the various issues I'd pointed out. He said curtly that they would spend some time that day fixing those spots as I wanted, in addition to re-placing the doorbell ringer back where it goes (which had left an exposed hole in the wall), and cleaning up the project site. Then he opened the door for me to leave. Seriously unprofessional. Later in the day he called and said they were done, that the only thing left for them to do was to install some folding closet doors that hadn't arrived yet.

The next morning I went to the project site again, and noticed a few improvements, several remaining deficiencies, and a few ADDITIONAL issues. Along the length of the crown molding, most of the thin gaps had been effectively filled with smooth caulk, with no leakage onto the adjacent wall. The 1/4" gap was filled with caulk, too, and it didn't look good. A couple of the corners looked better, but many did not. He said they had used plaster and sanding to re-work the mis-matched corners, but I saw no evidence of this, just caulking and clear glue. Indeed, several corners looked WORSE than the day before because there were now big globs of plasticky caulking on the surface of the crown molding, and even smeared on the walls below in several spots. The doorbell ringer had not been moved back into place, so there was a clearly visible hole in the wall above my front door.

I also noticed two things that had escaped my attention previously: some newly installed baseboards produced very poorly matched edges, such that both have a very visible "lip" of wood protruding past the adjacent piece; and a bit of trim that was supposed to be installed around the top of a support column was missing. So I called
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
again, and told him that some things definitely looked better, but also explained the issues I was still seeing. I started talking about the crown molding, and he flatly stated that they are "DONE dealing with the crown molding." I said it's not done, though. He said they're "DONE with it!" and that I'll "have to hire someone else" if I want it fixed any further. I told him I can't pay him his last installment if the work isn't done, and he said fine, and that he would return the spare keys he still had. I sent him a follow-up email with photos showing examples of the problems I was still seeing with the crown molding, and also detailed the other few items that still needed to be done (the folding closet doors, the doorbell, the column trim, and removal of a small pile of construction debris from my back porch) and said that, independent ofthe crown molding issue, these items needed to be done or I would consider him in breach of contract. I also wrote and posted the first version of this review, ending with "I hope to update this later with a more positive outcome."

The next day I'd arranged to start painting with two friends - I planned to start with the ceilings in the hope that the crown molding issue might yet be resolved.
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
emailed and called to say that
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
would be back to deal with the four items I'd emailed him about. I said fine.
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
showed up and started working on those items and our little painting crew stayed out of his way. An hour or so later,
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
showed up and was suddenly civil, even cordial, asking if we might talk privately somewhere. He asked if he might hear my concerns again. This time he listened. He asked clarifying questions. He got up on a step ladder to look closely at what I was talking about. Ultimately he decided to send
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
on to the next job while he,
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
, stayed behind to give it a last shot with the crown molding, using caulk and Patch-n-Paint. It was like talking to a completely different person.

Admittedly, at that point I was so concerned that I'd be left with crappy crown molding that I ratcheted down my expectations. I didn't bring up the two-foot-long, 1/4" gap between one wall and the crown molding above it, which
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
had stuffed with a thick bead of caulking and which is still clearly visible as a cheap fix. I gave up the idea that anyone was going to recut the two bits of baseboard that meet very poorly at two corners. And I was willing to accept any amount of improvement in the worst of the mismatched crown corners. To
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
's credit, he did a good job fixing almost every problematic corner, spending several hours sanding, patching, caulking, smoothing, and removing most of the glops that had been messily smeared on neighboring surfaces. (The next day I did a few more touch-ups to the crown, and still need to revisit the baseboards to see if additional patching and sanding will bring them in line, but it's WAY less work left for me to deal with than before.)

So then I had to wonder why this was all so contentious and difficult in the first place. I never raised my voice or was nasty in any way that might warrant such unprofessional behavior. It was confusing when he suddenly switched 180 back to the civil, agreeable person I'd met on day one, offering me a handshake and asking "Are we OK?" It reminded me of the time I lived with a manic depressive roommate for a year - you just never knew which person was going to be there when you got home.

Very Well.
Boston Handyman Services Provider Name Locked
gave me a fair price for the project and was very helpful in taking care of little things as the project went along without charging me extra. He works by the job with quotes for labor and materials. This allows him to work at his own pace and hours to coordinate with his other jobs. But his work came in right on time. Very nice person to work with and eager to please and do a good job. No problems at all and I would definitely hire him again.
