Repair went ok. I was told I needed a new system and I agreed. Got an estimate. When I asked about the price and if there was a less costly system, I was told "we do not sell any cheap stuff" rather abruptly. I was not asking for "cheap" but for perhaps a
priced unit. I was not provided with a written description of what the estimate entailed nor were my specific needs and circumstances addressed. I have used this company for over 20 years but they have recently merged with two other companies. Since that time, their services have been much less personal and less efficient, i.e., I now have to call to an out of state scheduler who is not familiar with me or my needs despite the fact that their local office is very close to me and I previously was familiar to those with whom I spoke and did not have to review my systems with them each time I called.

I saw the $59 tune-up deal offered by
on Angie's List, and I thought that it would be a good time to do some preventive maintenance. I purchased my home in 2012 and had not checked the A/C unit in the 2.5+ years since I moved in. It is important to note that I never had any issues with it; it worked well for nearly 3 years. However, I subscribe to the adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And, 30 months is a long time to go without servicing.
The company scheduled my service almost immediately. I believe I bought it on Angie's List on a Thursday afternoon, and the service was scheduled for the next Tuesday morning early.
The first technician (
) arrived on time and performed the tune-up. To my relief, everything was fine, and the unit did not need any repairs (major or minor). The technician added a negligible amount of coolant (approx. 4 ounces) since my Angie's List "Big Deal" included up to 16
. of coolant. I was quite happy with the service when he left.
Unfortunately, almost immediately after the tune-up, I couldn't get the A/C to turn back on. In response to this problem, I called back to arrange a follow-up service call. The company was very responsive to my concerns. A second technician (
) arrived when he said he would.
Ultimately, It turned out, that in performing the tune-up, the first technician stirred up an ant bed near the unit. The ants, therefore, made their way into the unit and had overrun the electrical contacts. I was happy for the quick diagnosis and that
was able to replace the part so quickly. I also took the opportunity to replace my old thermostat with a newer and better model. I can't complain about the quality of the work. I think it was done well.
My issues are twofold:
(1.) I do not think that I would have had this problem had I never done the preventive tune-up in the first place. I firmly believe that opening up the unit while simultaneously stirring up the ant bed was the direct cause of the second service call. Thus, had I never done the preventive tune-up, I never would have needed a second service call. The second technician dismissed this concern out of hand. And, while I am aware that ants cause many electrical shorts, I do not believe it to be coincidental that my unit worked without issue for as long as it did and then fail on the same day as the first service call !!!
(2.) I take an issue with the overall value. While the quality is good, the price was excessive, even usury. The wholesale price of the single pole electrical contactor needed to complete the repair is less than $10. It took less than 10 minutes to install. With parts and labor, the price was $250. For me, it made sense in the moment to pay it. However, I cannot in good conscience recommend this company. With prices like that for what is relatively
maintenance, I'd hate to see their quote for a major repair !!
In summary: I paid just shy of $471 for two service calls, a system inspection, a quarter pound of coolant, and to replace two components, one of which failed (at least in part) as a direct result of the first service call.

This is the third year we have used Freedom to check our AC systems, and again, we were very pleased with their service. We have had some problems with attempted theft of the AC units (now locked behind a fence) and some other random issues which were recently diagnosed by another AC/heat/plumbing service company as needing a new $5,000 unit. We let the other folks (whom we'd used previously mostly for plumbing) get the AC running and cooling, and then had Freedom back out a couple of months later to check everything out & recommend any needed repairs. Surprise! All we needed was some cleaning, coolant, and a small electrical part replaced (taken care of in a second appointment outside the Angie's List special, very reasonably priced).
Oh - when they showed up RIGHT ON TIME, our power was out! One of those freak, brief inner city power blips that happened between the time the dispatcher called to say the truck was en route, and 15 minutes later when he showed up. They very kindly re-worked our appointment into the afternoon after the power came back on. Very much appreciated! Freedom is definitely now our go-to service company for any AC issues.

I bought a $29 HVAC inspection from

& Air. Setting the appointment was easy, and I was told the technician would be arriving at my house between 11-1. When no one showed up by 1:00, I had to call and ask where the service person was and when he would arrive. He was about 15 minutes late past the 11-1 arrival window. The experience only goes downhill from there. The person who came to my house said he was a supervisor, and all first time customers are assigned supervisors. My upstairs unit had just cut off a few days before, so he went upstairs to check. Right away he began talking about how this looked really bad (just from looking at the temperature air setting mount on the wall), which didn't make sense considering he hadn't actually gone in the attic or looked outside. The unit is only 7 years old. When he did go to the attic, he saw the drain

was full, but that can happen when the drain line out is clogged. Once that happens, the unit automatically turns off. After 10 minutes of him looking at things in the attic and then going outside, he proceeded to tell me that the a/c wasn't installed properly, there is no drain for the water to go outside, the lines were either leaking or frozen and that I need a new unit because so much damage would occur if this continued to run it it's current state. He said it wouldn't do any good to inspect and clean the unit ($29 coupon I bought) and to call him to set up a day for him to come and replace the whole thing. After that, he left without having done any work. So, I got a second opinion the same day from a contractor who does large cooling and heating projects on businesses. Lucky for me I did because the second guy cleared out the drain

Additionally, he said the valve appeared to have been loosened intentionally because the unit is only a few years old and working fine. My a/c is working fine now! There is a leak somewhere in the system. They have been back 5 times and it still does not work properly. Will not cool (hold a charge) for more than about 10 hrs.
Upon replacing the original, they wanted a $400.00 disposal charge (not paid by warranty). This is a component that will sell at scrap yard for more than $100.00.

They checked on finding replacement parts for the 19 year old unit, and were willing to order them, however we did not wish to wait for 30 business days without AC. We opted to go with a new unit, which they said they would install that very evening (by now almost 7pm), however the storms were starting in the area, and it was too dangerous. They came the next morning and replaced the unit within a couple of hours. They were respectful and accommodating.
