"I went to the website and completed all of their information to indicate that I wanted to have an evaluation to have a deck built. I never" heard anything back from them again.

"Working with and was a pleasure. My wife and I contracted with them to install a roof deck on our rowhome in Canton," Baltimore. She and I both work in the design/build industry, so our project was not going to be your run-of-the-mill deck. We knew exactly what we wanted from the start, and we know just enough about construction to be dangerous, and that means we can be a major pain-in-the-butt for any contractor. was super friendly and open to working with our particular and unique design ideas throughout the whole process. He is a genuinely warm individual and his attitude and vast experience in his trade instilled confidence in us from the get-go. We interviewed and received quotes from 4 or 5 contractors before signing on with and RCDA, and almost all of those other quotes came in significantly higher than ’s bid. Not to mention, was able to start and finish our project very quickly - within a few months of our initial quote. He manages different crews on different projects simultaneously so you’re paying for his detail work, oversight and management of the project, but not for his expertise onsite all-day-every-day when the bulk of that time would be unnecessary. Some contractors we spoke to in the past were opposed to the idea of tailoring the design to our wishes. We felt like they wanted to build their deck on our house, not our deck on our house. and RCDA not once balked at the choosy specifics of our material choices, our particular layout and designs, or the custom-built details of our project. He instead was particularly excited to work with us to build a unique end product. Also, at no time did we feel like he was trying to pull a fast one on us, which I understand is a big fear for most homeowners. It was almost a bonus that he and the crew were very courteous and exceptionally clean during the interior work of our house. Each day they worked we had one foreman and about two laborers at the house. seemed to stop in once every few days or so to address detail issues, to make sure things were going as planned, and to fill the foreman in on the next steps in the project. On occasion, we would come home from work to find that the crew had progressed with construction in a way that was contrary to our original discussions. We would then shoot a text about the issue (in many cases he already knew), and he would be there early the next day to straighten things out. As I stated before, my wife and I had very strong opinions on the project and wanted to see our design carried out to the fullest extent. I imagine we were more involved than the typical homeowner would have been. It was stressful for my wife and I in the few instances when the crew had progressed in error; however, was always a phone call away and would set the matter straight, even if it meant additional material and labor costs on his end. We have lived with the deck for about a month now and are still happy with the results. We’ve found a few issues and he has come back to take care of them. There are a few details we’ll take care of on our own, since we know he’s gone above and beyond in every other respect. In the end, everything worked out great and we are happy with the overall experience. If you are picky, know that is very available and seems happy to please. He is very responsive via call or text, but occasionally needs reminders of particular details (understandable for someone managing multiple projects). If you’re planning on a standard deck and ’t want to be heavily involved, I believe and RCDA would provide a quality and safe product. If we had to do it again, we would choose and .

I agree with Jim Casper - after about 50 years of dealing with weathered wood finishing both in my homes and in the construction business, it comes down to about 90% preparation, 10% the finishing. If you do not prep the wood right, any moisture, mold, etc in the wood will destroy whatever you put over it.

High-build finishes like paint and epoxies and, from reading the Rustoleum flyer on this new product that too, work by trying to make an impenetrable surface and depend on a very good bond with the surface, AND no water getting under them. Because they are thick and are designed to provide a waterproof surface, unfortunately where water gets under them they are just as good or better at keeping it from evaporating, so you get fungal growth, blistering, and peeling.

Unfortunately, on deck and most outdoor applications except siding the surface will get nicked, scratched and otherwise develop leaks in short order. Water will therefore get into the underlying wood, and because it entered through small cracks and scratches, does not have any airflow to make it evaporate, so it sits there and breaks the finish bond to the wood (causing peeling and blisters), and promotes decay. That is why new deck boards and siding and trim that have been heavily or multi-coat painted on all 4 sides, thinking that will give the best protection, only last a few years versus the usual 10-20 years or so for boards that are painted top and sides only.

The full sun and hot conditions will, of course, cause more thann normal heating of dark colored painted decking. I had one instance where I was doing an independent appraisal of a very large commercial deck at a government facility, and in 85-90 degree daytime temps, in the sushine the chocolate brown deck surface temp was 150 degrees, and the paint was softening so much it stuck to the bottom of your shoes a couple of months after application.

As Jim said, the studies pretty clearly show that a breathable penetrating stain gives the best life, after plain ACA/CCA (copper chromium variations - the green stuff) treated wood. Penetrating stains, properly applied, do NOT seal in the moisture, they inhibit its entry and (when dark colored) help protect against sun damage to the wood and finish, but still breathe enough to let moisture escape on dry days. For my money, I will only use petroleum distillate (paint thinner cleanup) products, as they penetrate into the wood much better. Water based ones immediately start swelling the wood pores, so it blocks further penetration of the stain, which while cleanup is a bit easier, totally defeats the purpose of a PENETRATING stain or sealer.

I would recommend against any sort of waterproofing sealer, as they trap the water just like paint, and I have never seen one that is effective for 2 years.

My personal preference, though it limits the architectural coloration possibilities, is ground-contact rated copper compound treated wood (NOT the Wolmanized brown product), which comes green initially but can be retreated with either green or brown solution or can be liquid colorized darker (though not easily to a specific tone) using either of those as a base. My practice is to redo the treatment before installation to ensure thorough treatment, as from the mill it commonly has skips where boards contacted each other or where stacking seperators laid on it, and the ends are commonly very poorly done. This is done after cutting to length, as cut ends have to be retreated anyway.  A simple short deck cleaner soak followed by a light pressure washing and brush or roller re-treating of ONLY the TOP surface every 10 years or so has, for me, reduced visible weathering of the boards and beams to negligible.

As stated by others: You get what you pay for.  Many contractors no longer use employees.  The cost/benefit ratio is gone by the time worker's comp. insurance, unemplyment and other taxes are paid.  Especially with the high turnover in our industry.  Many, myself included, have our guys set up as sub-contractors.  That means even if the job is only for a day the duties have been outlined and a set pay to complete those duties has been established from the onset.  It's a better way to manage costs once I got used to it.  Also, it means I can operate cheaper and not have to charge as much to the customer.  My agreements with my guys, which they sign, make it clear that I nor the homeowner are responsible for their safety and medical care should a problem arise and that all parties are relieved of any such obligation.  If you hire a contractor who follows this growing practice ask to see a copy of his sub-contractor agreement.

That being said, a legitimate contractor still has operating cost which vary by area and how they run their business.  I break even at $150/day not including labor and materials so I've got to charge more than that to make money.  To keep the math simple, if I'm paying $250 for a pne day job in labor plus another $300 in materials and $150 operating costs I've got to charge $700 to the customer to break even.  That's if I'm only doing one job a day which is why most of us manage several at a time.  The point I'm trying to make is that someone with the necessary knowledge and experience to build you a safe deck is not going to be cheap.  Knowledge accompanies success which costs money.

I've repaired or restructured several decks built by handymen who should find another profession.  Ask yourself this question when hiring someone for this project: Would I trust this person to build my house?  If the answer is no you need to find someone else.  The deck is just as important.  It's where your family, friends, kids are going to gather and interact.  If it isn't structurally sound it can collapse causing injury or even death.  One last word on decks: Always screw a deck together, don't nail it.

Assuming you buy the right size door to fit the rough opening, and that your old door is not a size that is no longer made, and that you get the correct depth and transition adapters and sills and flashing and trim and seals and such, and that you transport it home without distorting and damaging it, then removal and disposal of old one and install new one probably about $250-400 depending on how well it fits, number of transition and similar pieces that have to be assembled (from 1 or 2 for some doors to as many as 30 on others).

The laundry list of things at the start WAS intended to intimidate you - I would say not 1 in 25 homeowners who buy a new patio door have bought it the right size for the rough opening and have everything needed to install it - the contractor almost invariably has to go get materials or parts to complete the installation - sometimes waiting weeks for factory adapters that are needed or missing parts AFTER the original door has already been taken out.

I would question why you are going to probably spend as much installing a door that may not do the job for you as the cost of the door. I would hazard at least half of people who go buy a $250-400 cheap door at a box store are sorely disappointed within months - due to poorly fitted parts, bad or non-existent seals causing drafts or water leaks, fogging or breaking glass, etc.

I would recommend you assess your needs, in conjunction with your installer find a decent and reputable brand unit to fit that need and that fits the loction right, and probably pay 50% more installed but have something that you might actually be happy with. Oh - BTW - your best installers generally will not install the cheapest box store units because they do not want the callbacks, so many times the quality of the installer who will actually do the job for you at a price you are willing to pay gives you a job that is - you guessed it, worth what you paid for it.

?

The product has evolved considerably since the lawsuit.

I would still do your own research and give you contractor your feedback.  At the end of the day, the cost for whatever board you want will be similar.

I will start with the bottomline -- "Spectacular". We had no clue that the deck would look this good. We spoke with who came out to our home promptly. Very professionally and courteously spoke to us, and understood what we wanted. He then proceeded to walk out back with us, described in detail what he could do and made ...More some recommendations. Then he surprised us by drawing out a rough sketch of the deck and offering us a firm estimate Right On The Spot. He was so confident about the product he was offering and the quality of workmanship that he gave us time to think about it if we wanted...no pressure at all. Now this was the fourth estimate that we got in the space of a month, and we were already well versed in the technical details of a Fiberon deck and we knew what was offering us, was more than fair. Still we decided to take a day to think about it, and then decided that since could give us the deck in time to enjoy some of summer, we would go with them.
Note: All the other deck estimates we had requested, took at least 10 days to come in, and even with that, there were qualifiers...if the soil was an issue, the cost would increase, our gas meter line needed to be removed...etc. simply said -- "No issue" we will work around these...they also assured us that if there was an issue that they found later, the estimate would not change!
Being that this was a large deck, and that they had to cut through an asphalt driveway that ran around our home, we thought that this would take a few weeks. Well we reckoned without knowing how efficient and his crew (totally 3) were. The deck was essentially completed within 5 days -- this is with delays due to the torrential downpours that resulted in them having to work shorter hours on two days. I truly have never seen people work so hard (physically), and so efficiently. Everything was so neat, they were courteous and polite (and frankly they did not even need to ask us any questions). They came in, made quick progress but were still very detail oriented. They cleaned up the workplace every day when they were done and honestly worked like machines, taking just about an hour for a lunch break.
When they were done, we did a walk around with and everything was so well done. We got a gorgeous deck and also now have a lovely place below the deck. called today to see how things went, and will be dropping by for another walk through just to ensure that we are totally happy.
My wife was the one who found on Angies list and she decided to follow up and at least get a quote from them before we went with someone else (who would put us on their list and get this done a few months from now). I am so glad that she did. We were (and are) impressed with the fact that , and his crew are just regular folk, no nonsense and no unnecessary flair. They are honest people who tell you exactly what they can do, and then deliver more than you would expect.
We highly recommend if you are planning to get a deck done - in our opinion, you cannot go wrong. Thanks , (and crew), and Angies list!

This process started when I was planning to have my yard landscaped. When the landscaper showed me a photo she had taken of my flower bed at the base of my porch, it was like I saw the porch for the first time. It was concrete block, cracked, stained, and very dated. It had been installed in the early 1950s, when it replaced the original old wooden ...More porch. I searched the list, and was impressed with the reviews for , and liked that it was family owned and operated. I called for an estimate, and his uncle, made an appointment for the next day. is a knowledgable and pleasant person with whom to work. I felt comfortable immediately, and decided not to get additional opinions. suggested a 10 x 16 foot deck of composite, trouble-free material. We worked together on where to place the steps, and I selected the decking materials, with Horizon Ipe as the deck color, and white trim and latice. The railings are white with black spindles.
The work started on the agreed-upon date, with two men who demolished the old porch in a matter of hours. They worked without a break, even when it rained. Unfortunately, pulling down the old porch revealed a total mess of the masonry, created, apparently, when the original porch was pulled down. There were exposed wooden slats stuffed with newspapers, and a deep crack down to the ground. I told that I definitely wanted that repaired before any other work could be done, and he certainly agreed. The two men who built the deck, and , knew exactly what needed to be done to repair the masonry, and they did a beautiful job repairing it. The house is stucco, built in 1929, so the repairs were even more extensive than it originally appeared. could just pull chunks of old masonry off the house. He cleared away everything that needed to be removed, and did a tremendous job repairing and painting. There was always water damaging the basement wall at that spot, and now I certainly know the cause. This should make a big difference. The masonry work, supplies and labor, cost an additional $600, which was very reasonable. I also asked to level the concrete pad that was under the old porch, to prevent water from pooling there, and he made repairs to that as well.
and worked long, hard hours building the deck, It is more beautiful than I could have imagined. It goes so well with the while stucco house that to me and to several of my neighbors, it's like it's always been there.
Never having had a deck before, I was unaware of just how hot the deck could become. I noticed my dog lifting his paws while he was standing on it. I put him in the house, and then touched the deck, and it was burning hot. A birds egg had been dropped and broken on the deck, and the egg yolk was cooked!

This was a difficult review to grade, as you will see below. Overall, I gave a D because it was B work, done quickly, but incomplete.
I was trying to repair a few rotten spots on my deck by myself last summer(2014). I found that almost all of the 4x4 posts were rotten and knew I was over my head. Called and Shed, who we ...More had used the previous year on stairs.
They came out the next day, since out deck had no rails, and cut and constructed the posts and handrails. As they were packing up, I noticed a small mistake on the East side of the deck. They quickly fixed the problem.
We were told not to stain the new wood until it dried. When we were staining the old wood about a month later, we noticed that they had not correctly removed the 1x10 on the West Side of the deck, next to the house and over the basement door. It looked like a complicated job, so I called them in August to ask them to come out to complete the job. I heard back from our salesman, who said he would take care of it. I didn't hear from him again.
I called two or three more times, and complained about the incomplete job. I got a call back from the Owner of the company in the Fall. He said he hadn't heard about this and was argumentative, at first. I was a little argumentative as well. We both calmed down and he said that he would look into this.
I have not heard back from them. Over a year later, I can only assume that the company is not going to complete the job as promised. I am disappointed because they had been attentive and helpful in their customer service until this. I hope that it was a blip, and I hope that I hear from them. If I do, I will update the review.

The bow window that they installed has been very drafty. The gutters clearly leaked. I took video of the leaking during rainstorms and sent them the video of the leaking. After weeks of repeated calls, the owner stopped by and agreed to fix the gutters. Not all of the leaks were fixed. I sent more video and left repeated messages. The foreman ...More told me that he had come to the house and saw no problem. This could not have been true. After a couple of years, I paid someone else to do the repair and have had no leaks since then.

Provider did a good job. I have used them in the past so I was happy to give them the business. My deck was larger than the deal specified so I had to pay a little more money but it was worth it. My deck is 20 years old so the treatment was needed. The deck looks great and i am pleased with the job done. Worker was polite and courteous.

came to the house to discuss what I wanted. At the time I thought I wanted a gray composite deck floor to match my house's siding, but he suggested the Ipe color which turned out to be just wonderful, matching the color of the vinyl "stone" tile in my kitchen, from which the deck opens. I knew TREX would be expensive, ...More but it's guaranteed for 25 years and all you have to do is wash it off. He gave me a professional estimate, and answered the remaining questions I had.
The original deck was dismantled and the new deck built in five-six working days by his partner. I gave them access to the house but didn't have to be there. The deck boards themselves are on the diagonal, which is part of 's signature style, and makes the deck look larger. The other element of his signature is that the corners of the deck are not 90-degree , but instead use two posts to "cut across" the corner.
I am very happy with the deck. I paid high end, but I have rarely been more satisfied with an outlay of money. I think my return on investment, whenever I come to sell this house in the future, will be at least double or perhaps triple.
