had given us an estimate in mid December for both replacement of the back door and a new deck. We had decided to put off building the deck until it was a little warmer weather. But, we really wanted the old back door removed and replaced with a safer and better option.

is very professional and came back to do another estimate closer to the date of the work and then a third time to make sure of the dimensions. We have a VERY old townhouse (built in 1900) and this back door was extremely old. It hadn't originally been framed properly and the deadbolt went into the trim. So, we were extremely happy to have a new door framed and put in correctly.

and his team (

and another younger worker) were excellent. They showed up on time and worked diligently throughout the day. What we thought would take 2-4 hours actually ended up taking almost 8 hours since they had found that they needed to do more work (chipping the brick and shaving some of the drywall) to make the door fit. They hung new trim and spackled the drywall, repainted the outside/inside, and caulked everything so it was sealed. I would HIGHLY recommend this company to anyone doing work to their home. We are actually having them come this morning to finish up the sanding and painted the interior of the door (they needed to let it dry) so I can't wait to see the finished product. They were excellent and we are looking forward to working with them in the spring on our deck.

"There were a couple instances that we had to reschedule parts of the job, but these were few and far between. For a large part of the job his team was comfortable working on the roof by accessing it from the street 4 stories below. They were always very kind, courteous, and appreciative that I picked them for the job. Coming from the midwest, I expect that at home but rarely find it on the east coast."

Should I paint or stain my deck?

Angie's List member Larry J. of Yakima, Wash., submitted this photo of what he called an "excellent" deck-staining experience. "They successfully navigated weather complications and then made the deck staining process look easy while doing a beautiful, professional job."

Dear Angie: Our deck has been previously stained, but it has worn off. The deck is not covered, so I want something durable. Would I be better off staining it again or painting it?

"I got about three quotes for painting the wood trim on my house and garage. They were not that far apart, but

gave me the most confidence. As a bonus, his fiancee is an interior designer and helped me pick a color. She and a helper also helped with the painting. They were very meticulous and neat.

was very willing to work within my schedule constraints. When I decided I wanted the whole fence power washed, instead of just the steps, it was no problem to add that work in. The quote included painting the shutters, but ultimately

advised against this because he saw that they needed to be replaced. The job took about four days.

"A salesman visited my house to provide an estimate for replacing my roof, including decking and gutters. Prior to leaving, he told me I could expect the estimate in my email inbox by a certain date. However, I didn't receive the estimate as promised. I contacted him after the agreed date, and only then did he provide it. When I looked at the document, I was highly disappointed. The only information contained in it was a price (which was astronomical) and the overall objectives of what a roof is supposed to do (i.e., basically provide shelter). It was only after asking in a reply email that I found out what type of materials were included, the warranty of the shingle, and all other important information that should have been included initially in the estimate. High levels of ambiguity or vagueness typically indicate shadiness to me, but maybe I'm overly paranoid. I will credit them in their company follow-up. About one week after receiving the estimate, a woman called from Brothers to query my experience. She seemed interested - whether they implement any improvement is another story. Unfortunately, I won't contact them again."

"The father-son team arrived a few minutes early for our appointment. The father especially is very experienced and knowledgeable about building to code. I have no doubt that they would have done a good job. They do all the work themselves and came highly recommended. The downside was that they seemed eager to take down the deck and start from scratch. This was not an option we were at all prepared for. Our house was inspected before we bought it, and the inspector never suggested that the deck would need replacing. Royal did give us an estimate in a timely fashion for the

job of replacing the posts and the balustrade. We did not hire them because their estimate was beyond our budget. We were able to better evaluate our situation based on their expert opinion.

"We have a slate roof and copper gutters that were damaged badly in February. The slate tiles had snowguards attached, which were dragged down by the 38" of snow, taking over 80 tiles and the gutters down with them. We were away for much of March so we waited awhile to file a claim.

came out last month and gave us a prompt estimate which was significantly more than the insurance company first estimated. As it turns out, the insurance company came out in the rain and didn't get a good look at the damage.

dealt directly with the insurance company, who quickly agreed to his price. After they agreed he ordered the parts and was out within a couple weeks working on the roof. I can't say enough good things about
Baltimore Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
. He does beautiful work - the roof and gutters look better than ever. He really went over and above the call of duty. For example, he moved existing tiles around to make the color pattern seem more uniform. He repaired a long length of rotted fascia board for free. He went back and rewelded a piece of the copper gutter because he didn't like the color of the original weld! I never would have noticed that - not in a million years. He treats the house as if its his own. In fact, the work spanned a weekend so he came over early Sunday morning and took down the ladders and scaffolding so we wouldn't have to look at it all day. Wow. I was so happy I've already arranged for him to build a deck on the back of the house this summer.

"This project was surprisingly easy. I had interviewed several contractors, one of which never got back to me and others who I was afraid would cut corners.
Baltimore Deck Builders Provider Name Locked
wanted to do the work and wanted to work with me on the design. I asked for a very architectural design and he prepared drawings exactly to my specifications. This meant some of the work would have to be hand crafted. He is extremely creative when it comes to problem solving. I have an art gallery and good design is very important to me. He called me every morning to tell me he was about to enter the back garden which I think is so thoughtful. The crew was prompt, friendly and willing to work through some of the damp and rainy weather to complete the job in a timely manner. They came to work. Just wonderful. I would feel extremely confident recommending

to do this type work for anyone

"I contacted Horizons and Bill Gmeinwieser came to the house within a day to survey the project and prepare a quote. When he called back later the same day with the quote, I told him that I had also meant to ask him for a quote to replace the wood trim around the garage door. He told me he'd arrive with the work crew and provide a quote for that work then. A 2-man crew arrived on time to repair the portico. I asked them about the garage but they told me they had nothing to do with quotes, and that I should contact Bill. They did walk over to the garage and pull a piece of the wood off. That did not make me happy. The repair to the portico took most of the day, including what seemed to be a rather long absence mid-day. In the men's defense, it was a cold, drizzly day. At the end of the day, the one workman informed me that the flashing could not be installed when the brick is wet and that they would be back another day to finish the job. I had my doubts, but the men returned within a couple days. Since it had just stopped raining, I was a bit doubtful that it was the best time to put on the flashing. I was assured it was fine and they quickly finished the job. My one big disappointment with the work is partly my fault. When Bill told me what type of columns he would be using I didn't quite understand him other than his point that this was the best type to use. They are PVC. The portico is wood, the steps are brick and the railing is wrought iron. Adding shiny PVC to the mix would not have been my first choice. It has been a year and the portico is solid. Bill never showed up as promised when the work was being done to provide a quote on the garage trim."

"It went very well. We contacted the representative, he came out, took measurements, designed the deck, gave me a price and we negotiated. We then came up with a final design, I signed the contract and things got underway."

"It was great. They gave me an estimate. The work was nicely done. They were on time. Everything was done well. They checked to make sure that everything was done correctly. They came out as soon as I emailed them to come and give me an estimate."
