Detailed inspection helps clients land a good home

Edge is a certified member of the Georgia Association of Home Inspectors and is code certified in all four discplines — mechanical, plumbing, electrical and structural. Edge says he takes nothing for granted while inspecting. “There may be a space I don’t want to crawl in, but Murphy’s Law, if I don’t, there’s inevitably going to be something wrong there,” he says.

For more than 25 years, Gary Edge wandered the globe as an air traffic controller, ensuring safe takeoffs and landings at airports in Australia, Atlanta, Oman and Hong Kong. After he retired in 2001, he yearned to return stateside permanently. "I didn't want to be nomadic anymore," Edge says. "I have a 5-year-old and a 14-year-old, so it's important to have some stability."

An admitted "fix-it guy," Edge developed his electrical background serving in the Marine Corps and also briefly worked as a real estate agent. After he settled in Atlanta, he stumbled upon a career path that combined those skills. "My sister had just had a home inspection done, and it looked like something I could do well," Edge says.

But Angie's List members say his work goes beyond well.

"He sets the standard for home inspection," says Michael Calderon. "He takes the time to answer questions, he's very detailed and a very nice guy."

Edge cites attention to detail as the main reason for his success. "As an air traffic controller, you have to pay attention to what's going on and stay up on the rules and regulations," he says. "Home inspection is the same way, with building codes changing every few years."

Susan Brinkley of Atlanta says Edge missed nothing in inspecting her potential home. "AccuSpect lived up to its excellent reviews," she says. "Nothing escaped Gary's notice."

Though retired from the stressful world of air traffic control, Edge realizes the stakes are high in home inspections, too. "It's too important a job not to do the very best you can," he says. "This is one of the most important purchases people make in their lives; you can't just do a drive-by."
