Furniture restoration continues a family tradition

A lot of these pieces are family heirlooms, and we really do take that seriously.”

"It's extremely rewarding when we do a project like refinishing someone's family heirloom and bringing it back to its original state or better," says Nathan Williams, president and second-generation owner of Williams Furniture Repair Inc. in Tucker [Ga.]. "It's why I've been doing it for 27 years."

Nathan, 46, took over the business after his father and mother, founders Bill and Thelma Williams, retired in 2001. The business began in 1964 at the same location it resides today. Nathan's sister, Valerie Melton, is vice president and his brother, Niles, is a repairman.

Nathan said there was no doubt he was going into the family trade. "I knew when I started in this full-time that there was a niche for really good quality repair," he says. "We've just expanded what our parents built and took it to the next level."

Instead of fixing furniture stemming from moving-related damage as his late father did, Nathan's six-person business emphasizes repairing, restoring or refinishing fine antique furniture. Among his favorite projects was restoring an 18th-century English case clock damaged from flooding during Hurricane Katrina.

They also refinished several pieces for the Historic Barrington Hall, an Antebellum plantation in Roswell. "We did about half of the work in that house," he says. "That was a feather in my cap."

Much of their work comes from repeat and referral business, and Nathan says that's the reason is they treat every piece of furniture as if it was their own. "My dad told me, 'If you're happy with it, the customer is going to happy with it,'" he says.

Angie's List member Vicki Benefield of Tucker experienced Williams' commitment to quality work firsthand when they restored a set of 1920s twin beds owned by her late mother. "I have never seen such a beautiful job, and my uncle restored furniture as I was growing up," she says. "The experience was absolutely perfect."
