Pros and cons of concrete and asphalt driveways

What material is best for driveways? Why?

Scott: Concrete. It's maintenance-free and lasts longer than asphalt.

Sudlow: Concrete. It's more durable and requires less maintenance.

Stanley: Asphalt. If you have a bigger job, it's cheaper and it holds up as good as concrete if you put it down right.

How much does it cost?

Scott: Depending on site conditions and the preparation required, it's $4 to $8 a square foot.

Sudlow: There are a lot of different things that affect the price, but it's usually about $4 to $4.50 per square foot.

Stanley: We have a $750 minimum, and the average is $1 to $1.50 a square foot.

How long does it last?

Scott: Anywhere from 10 to 30 years, depending on what's driven on it.

Sudlow: It can last 40 years and longer under ideal conditions.

Stanley: Usually about 20 years.

How long before I can start using my new driveway?

Scott: You can walk on it after one day and drive on it after five.

Sudlow: Three days.

Stanley: You can use it the same day if it's not too hot.

Can you resurface my existing driveway?

Scott: We'd have to remove the existing. The new material won't adhere to the old.

Sudlow: Typically not, it doesn't perform well.

Stanley: If the existing base is solid, we can pave right over it.

Can you repair the driveway if it's cracked?

Scott: We recommend replacing the driveway because repairs are unsightly.

Sudlow: Replacing the driveway is the only way you won't see the repairs.

Stanley: You can put a sealer on them, but if it's too bad, you can just cut them out and replace that section.

What kind of maintenance is required?

Scott: You can pressure wash it every once in a while.

Sudlow: Just keep it clean.

Stanley: Get it resealed every three years.
