We had the PREVIOUS GROUT & CAULK job in our master shower/tub walls DONE BY ANOTHER CONTRACTOR who did the remodeling of our master bathroom shower/tub OVER 10 YEARS AGO, including at that time, new tile, concrete board and shower door.
When
Bass (
) came to our home late last year for the estimate of the service, he stated that the previous grout/caulk (over 10 years old) was still in good condition,
except for a small area where the caulk and grout was starting to
deteriorate in just a few spots (in the very lower couple of tile rows
near the tub) and was the reason why we wanted to have it re-grouted and
re-caulked.
offered us 2 estimates: #1 re-do only the very lower
part (2 rows of tile only); #2 do a complete & more expensive job
($375.00) to re-do the caulk and the whole grout in the white tile walls
(up to & including some decorative beige tiles – about two feet
from the ceiling).
Since we had read good reviews of
’s work online, he
presented very polite, and he stated he had been doing this for several
years, we decided to start fresh and re-do the complete & more
expensive job, trusting that it would last about the same (10 years) that the previous job had lasted.
When
came to do the job, we asked several times in
various ways for an estimate of the expected lifetime of his work (i.e.
average of how long a grout/caulk job would last) considering that we
use it daily but keep it well maintained and clean.
gave evasive
answers every time we asked and never mentioned any specific amount of
time, which we found very peculiar, but trusted he would do a good job.
WHAT WE HAVE NOW IS WORSE THAN WHAT WE STARTED WITH:
arrived on a Saturday morning (01/18/2014) to do the
service and when he finished the job, we immediately spotted the first
problem: when
removed the old grout, he scratched the surface and
scraped the corners of about 4 or 5 beige tiles with his tool (SEE
SAMPLE PICTURE ATTACHED). Some other white tiles were also
damaged (however the damage in the white tile is not as noticeable as in
the colored ones). We were very disappointed that he never brought the
fact to our attention and we only noticed it upon inspecting his job
when he was finished and ready to receive his payment. He suggested that
we use a product to fix it, which did not help at all.
Also, upon our inspection, we noticed several bubbles
(small holes in the grout) and asked him to fix that, which he did that
same day.
He stated that things like the bubbles and the scratched
tile were due to his eyesight – that he needed glasses, but did not wear
them.
Furthermore, we wanted to use the same kind of caulk that
the previous contractor had used in the previous job and had lasted
several years –
advised that he had used a different kind of caulk
in his jobs that was, according to him, supposed to be "better".
Therefore, we took his advice – which later proved to be the wrong way
to go.
After
left, we noticed additional problems with the
grout & caulk finish: more bubbles in the grout, unfinished caulk in
sections of the shower door frame (including some sections where the
old caulk had not been removed), underneath the soap dish, and the
vertical caulk on the corner of the walls was so thin we could see the
concave
in the gap between the walls.
Before we started using the shower, we contacted him via email and he came a second time to fix the work.
We have followed all
's instructions re: maintenance & cleaning.
About 2 months after the service, the grout started to peel off (detach) and crack in several spots (SEE SAMPLE PICTURE ATTACHED).
About 1 month later (3 months after the initial service) the grout started to crack and fall off in some spots (SEE SAMPLE PICTURE ATTACHED).
NOTE THAT: The areas where the grout is cracking and falling off
now, are areas where the grout was perfect and smooth PRIOR to
's
work.
My husband contacted
again via email, listing all the
problems, since the beginning and explaining the situation re: the new
problems. Per
's request, we attached the 3 pictures mentioned above.
In one of
's reply via email, he included some thoughts
re: moisture as cause for the failing work – to which we replied that
the moisture was the same as for the last 10 years. Also in that email,
for the 1st time, he volunteered to give us a time frame of the lifetime
of his work – “2 to 3 years”. If the previous job (done by
another contractor) had lasted 10 years in good condition, there should
be absolutely no reason for
’s work to last 2 to 3 years and even worse, to start deteriorating in 2 months. We agreed that he would come over to see the problems for himself.
At that point, faced with the horizontal caulk near the tub
cracking in many spots and peeling off in a large section; and the grout
gaps, breaking and falling off in quite a few sections as well, we
realized that to fix the problem,
would have to remove and replace
the grout and caulk in all those sections, which would mean: using his
scraping tool again.
Besides the fact that we had already given
a 2nd

to fix the caulk and grout, a week after the initial job, we did not
feel comfortable allowing him to work on our bathroom any longer because
we were concerned that by using his tool to remove the caulk and grout
he would do yet more damage.
Therefore, we decided that we would allow him to come to our
home and see the problem first hand, since through the sample pictures
one cannot see the extent of the poor work. Our intention was to explain
to
that because of the damage he did to our tiles, we felt more
comfortable hiring another grout/caulk person to re-do the service he
had done and replace the tiles he had damaged, which we still have
left-over stored from our remodeling 10 years ago.
In consideration for the amount that we are going to spend
to re-do
’s grout/caulk job which started deteriorating after only 2
to 3 months, in addition to replacing the tiles
damaged, we
requested that he refund to us the amount we had paid him, which we feel
is fair (not even counting that we certainly will spend even more than
that amount because we will have to pay to have the damaged tiles
repaired).
Upon examining the grout & caulk on 06/14/2014,

offered to re-do the job yet one more time, however when we explained
the reasons above to him and requested the refund and that we part ways,
he refused and stated that (to quote) “if you felt that your shower
was in better condition prior to the service I did, it was your fault
that you chose the complete service instead of just the small repair”.
He also began to become confrontational & we felt
uncomfortable with him in our home. He left stating that he would NOT
give us the refund. When we mentioned reporting our dissatisfaction to
Angie’s list, he said we were threatening him.
A FEW FINAL NOTES:
This past weekend after
left our home, upon logging
in to another website, we read a recent review posted on 02/23/2014
where again,
did the same damage he did to our shower tiles at
someone else’s home – In that review, he scratched only 1 tile and upon
the customer’s complaint (and request for a discount) he gave her credit
for the day of service “at no charge” (per
’s reply at the website).
In our situation, we trusted him when in January he suggested that we
use a product to fix the damage (which ended up not helping at all).
Then in addition to the fact that he scraped the corners and scratched 4
to 5 beige tiles (NOT including the white ones), and the whole service
he did was worthless, we certainly were extremely disappointed that he
did not agree to refund the amount we had paid which was a service of
only half day (3 to 4 hours) and certainly will not be enough to fix the
damage he did.
Since January 2014, until prior to his last visit to our
home this past weekend, we exchanged some emails with
re: all the
problems we had with his job and most of the information we are
submitting in this review was discussed in the email tracked
conversations that we are ATTACHING TO THIS REVIEW.
We wrote the review above having in mind that the
previous job/remodeling of our master shower/tub DONE BY ANOTHER
CONTRACTOR was over 10 years ago, and after checking our files last
night we found out it was in March 2002 (12 years ago) – even longer
than we had thought and as
had said when he came over for the
estimate – “it was still in good condition” – Certainly it was
better than what it is now – In summary the experience was unsettling,
and to reiterate we ended up with worse than what we started with.

and
Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked

Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked
called me the same day as I sent my email inquiry and promptly arrived a few days later as planned. Within a day I had my estimate.
He was able to start earlier than I had thought he would, and his crew dealt with the fact that I had moved NOTHING to allow them to begin their work. They were thoughtful and made sure that there were paths to shimmy through so we could get from room to room.
Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked
's right hand man
Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked
was there every day. He was polite and informed me about every step. The job was complicated by the fact that my floors were far from even and the tiles I had chosen were 36" long. The crew made sure that everything would be done to my liking and at the end of the day, I now have lovely floors and not a stitch of wall to wall carpeting left in my home.
I would use
Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked
in the future and we made some plans already for some work I would like done when I have the time and money to complete the jobs.

This job went smoothly throughout. Mr. Ski inspected the old floor and told me why the cracks probably had occurred and explained what he would do. Since we were not replacing all the tile in the rooms, he explained the few minor issues we might face with trim work. The price estimate he gave was in line with expectations and he explained exactly when he would do the work.

Mr. Ski showed up at the appointed time and removed the old tile with a minimum of dust. Each day, he would explain the next steps in the process as the project progressed with installation of new tile. He was courteous and he cleaned up the job site each day.The final job was excellent and we were happy that he was able to work around some of the trim problems he had mentioned earlier.

This is virtually a one-man company. With the exception of an assistant during the demolition phase, he was the only person with whom we had contact. No subcontracting, no finger-pointing, no hassle. Just quality work at a reasonable price.

We had two leaky shower stalls that were getting progressively worse over time. We called
Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked
and learned that the leaks were due to the builder's improper installation of the shower door frames, which pierced the underlying shower
Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked
and created the
Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked
leaks. As a result, the shower pans had to be torn out and completely replaced. This also meant that the job would involve matching the existing tile as it was a partial tear out, which added some complexity to the work.
Overall, we were very placed with the value we received from
Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked
and team. The quality of their work was excellent and
Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked
prices were competitive. They attempted to accomidate our work schedules to meet with us at different points throughout the project.
In fact, we liked
Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked
shower work so much, we also hired him to 1) tear out a fireplace mantel with a raised brick hearth and replace it with a tile front and 2) Install additional tile to match and expand a kitchen bar back spash. Both projects were purely cosmetic and we were thrilled with the outcome of the work.
The only slight issue was that the fireplace tile installer (who was different from the shower
Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked
installer) had not worked with the type of tile we selected. Specifically, it was a stacked stone like product that was fairly new on the
Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked
and had an "A" and "B" installation pattern that the tile shop had neglected to explain to us. It took some time but we figured it out with the tile store and the installer could not have been any more patient and accomidating as we worked through designing the correct pattern. In the end, we love the work and I have recommended
Atlanta Tiling Experts Provider Name Locked
to a co-worker.
