"First - the provider provided an estimate that ended was unclear. In retrospect, this was possibly done on purpose. When the work was estimated we talked about" the bathroom counter AND the sinks, as well as a tile tune-up to shower tiles. He stated he could do this and that "he could do the sinks so only I would know that there was a scratch." This was a high quote, and I had gotten some other quotes, so I sincerely believed this estimate was for the entire counter + sinks. (The counter is not very large) I also made a cardinal mistake of not re-confirming and assuming the work was for the bath counter and sinks. When arrived, the lead tech stood over me and said that the quote was only for the sinks. At this point I was on a timetable and had not engaged the alternate Company that I had also gotten (now - much better) quote from, and I reluctantly and now regret terribly - said to go ahead. They proceeded with the work but never communicated some key things. -They removed my drains by cutting them out and not enabling me to re-use them and never told me. -They also dislodged bathtub controls and I was unable to figure out how to re-assemble -- and never mentioned The lead tech called me in after the work was done, and I looked at both the sinks and the shower. I noticed air bubbles, holes, swirls/irregularities in the edging on the sink and pointed it out. The tech said that would "resolve itself after awhile. He has been doing this for 25 years." I accepted that - as I had no reason to not believe this. The shower had areas that were missing, some stains were not removed and a crack was not filled. Again, the tech said once I washed the shower it should all look fine. They had a special product that did not require sealing and the off color would wash away. He also said he could come back if it turned out to be a big issue for me. When I asked if he could caulk the bath counter (where sinks were 4 lines of caulk - nothing major here) the tech stated that he already packed away his caulking material and the shower installers would have caulk and they could do that for me. (I had just paid $95 extra to caulk less than 3 feet around the tub.) The next few days, I noticed the sink becoming dull and scratchy looking and the shower looked acceptable but not at all what I had hoped for. I began looking up care instructions since nothing had been left with me and called the business's main offices to ask for guidance. The phone rep sighed heavily and said she would send me some cleaner. Another few days went by and I finally called to see if I could get the tech to come back. Because of the Company's very inflexible scheduling, I had taken a vacation day to get the original work done (they arrived at 11:30 and left at 3pm) but could not another day waiting for them to show up. PLENTY of other businesses work with their consumers to accommodate schedules and I was not asking for anything outlandish - just a first call. I encountered a very rude phone person who complained that the highway prevents them from getting anyone out early in the morning. (A 9-10 window is not unreasonable. There are many ways this could have been handled.) I left the conversation furious b/c this business had wasted my time and my money and hurt my heart - I was so excited about getting this bathwork done and they just ruined the experience in every way. I then sent them pictures of the sinks and called back the next day. I spoke with someone else and asked her if she could share them with the tech and help me know what was possible so frankly - I do not wait in vain and work time for nothing. She worked to schedule an afternoon window of 1-4 and that they would call 30 minutes out. So, that Friday, at 12:30 the tech called and said he would be there in 30 minutes. I asked if he could give me an extra 15 minutes,as I had hoped the window would start at 1pm (I have a delicate schedule at work myself) He said he did not want to wait. I replied I was leaving and would do my best to get there. The office then called and said their tech called and stated that I would not be there and to reschedule. Again, I pleaded I'd be there shortly - but I wanted to manage expectations. I ended up being there before 1PM and called them to let them know I had arrived. The tech showed up at 1:30 (after putting me through this.) He sanded the areas that were scratched and added product to the holes -- and left in 30 minutes. This was an appointment that should have been scheduled more appropriately first in the AM or as a last stop. I have never encountered a or more inflexible business as long as I have been hiring folks for my home. Separately the shower enclosure and door I purchased to install after the "tile tune up" ended up being delayed. SO - I called the alternate Company who had also provided a quote. They had a cancellation and came out and did my shower and bath tile trim beautifully. There was also a staggering difference in cost. They explained that it would be too risky to try to do the counter now that the sinks were done because their product would likely cause the other to peel. I will rate that business separately and not tie them into this mess. My sincere belief is that you should actually WARN members to proceed with caution if they use . Thank you

"I found Encore on Angie's List and called on Monday about resurfacing two bathtubs. He was able to come out that Friday, and even though" I had inadvertently given him incorrect information about whether the tubs had previously been refinished (thus creating more work for him) and he had to deal with (what I didn't know was) a leaky bathtub faucet, he was flexible, upfront about the cost increase, and got the job done in one day, even though he had to stay late to do it. The tubs look brand new and was incredibly responsive and easy to work with. I can't recommend him highly enough.

bathtub refinishing

Bathtub Liners and Refinishing

Over time, the bathtub can begin to show signs of wear with stains, scratches, a dull finish or other ugly marks. Bathtub refinishing is an option that can return a bathtub or shower enclosure to like-new appearance.

Dear Angie: We're remodeling our bathroom. Which is better to help increase the resale value of our home: a tub, a shower and one sink; or a big shower and two sinks? – Cal Z., Lakewood, OH

OK - terminology issue here. The "shower pan" is a collection liner than underlies the shower floor itself, and is designed (if built and plumbed right) to trap any leakage from the shower floor and route it to the same floor drain pipe. Example image here, copper in this case -

http://indigochreblog.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/img_0835.jpg

It sounds like your are saying the shower floor or base unit failed - likely a fiberglass or plastic shower, which commonly fail due to incomplete support under them. This can be repaired if fiberglass, but is not usually done unless just microcracking, as it is hard to find an expert - usually you have to have a car body fiberglass specialist or a surfboard repair expert do it, and the color will not match perfectly unless you get a new gelcoat over the entire base unit. Cost about $300-500, ASSUMING the material can be repaired - true fiberglass can, thermoplastic can sometimes be welded but anyone's guess how long it will last without cracking again, plastics like PVC can rarely be fixed so they will hold someone standing on them. Any sort of repair is likely to crack again, because you have done nothing to remove the cause of the cracking which is standing on a base that is not fully supported over its full extent. Some cheepo or desperate plumbers try injecting non-pressuring type expanding foam underneath to improve the support - this does a great job of supporting it but unfortunately supports mold, so starts stinking in short order as a rule.

The normal fix is to remove and replace it, because once it is out there is no sense in putting a damaged one back in for the small increment in cost. Removing it means taking the shower wall liners or the bottom row or two of tile out so you can get the new base unit into place (because they overlap it), then replacing them. So, the $3000 range indicated is indicative of this type of job, which typically runs from a very low of around $1500-2000 for an identical base unit, to more typically $3-5,000 depending on whether a shower enclosure or tile walls. Of course, when the new one is put in, it is CRITICAL that it be fully supported - this means rubbing plumbers rouge or similar marking substance on the bottom, test fitting it, and then lifting it out and checking that all the stiffener ribs and support pads made contact with the pan, and making adjusments as necessary until it has full contact, then standing in it and rocking back and forth to check for any points not making full contat and fixing them.

The $10,000 plus numbers you got must have been for entire shower replacement down to the joists and studs, and the $30,000 range number would be typical for a full bathroom remodel with new shower or shower/tub and doors and surround, wall finishes, vanity, sink, toilet, and flooring and door.

Great overall! He had an list discount and that was the deciding factor for me to go with him. is a very professional and trustworthy guy. I left him alone in the house doing the service and he said I could pay him in the evening, after I come back home at the end of the day. Better price and he even had ...More good referrals from his competitor. His resurfacing has a 5-year warranty and he only uses quality materials and techniques. I would hire his services again!

Mr. arrived, got right down to work and performed the job quickly. The smell was channeled out of the condo through a window in the den (no window in the bathroom). He gave good directions on care and warranty on the invoice. I was very happy with the service and results. I had a tub resurfaced in my home a year ago and it was ...More not done by Mr. . It cost $220 more than this service for a similarly sized tub. Results were not perfect (drips, sharp points on seat of tub). I am very happy with what he did and would use him again.

at Encore Resurfacing was recommended to me by a neighbor. When I called his cell phone, he answered the call, gave me a quote over the phone, and even scheduled the appointment. No back and forth with multiple phone calls. He showed up on time with everything he needed to complete the work in the time alloted. He was very careful ...More not to damage anything in our bathroom. He was extremely detail-oriented and knowledgable. Our tub looks fantastic.

came in and determined that the tub just needed a really good cleaning and not resurfacing. I appreciate his honesty! he also gave me some tips on how to keep the tub clean and recommended some products that he had used. He also re-caulked a couple of areas that needed it. He charged me $175 less the 5% Angie's List ...More discount. I found to be extremely pleasant and nice and performed exceptional work. I will definitely use him again if needed.

The tile in the shower had previously been painted (by a painter, not a tile expert), and the paintjob had quickly peeled and in general the shower looked terrible. We wanted a good solution to that problem without demolition. The Unique assessor arrived promptly when scheduled and immediately explained how much it would cost and what they could offer, ...More and that the possibilities would be that the tile was damaged underneath and would need refinishing or that it would simply need cleaning and fixing the grout.
On the appointed date, and his assistants, and , started by explaining exactly what was going to happen and what would work best, especially in terms of setting up the fan to ensure that the fumes of the paint removers would not . Unlike many contractors, there was no drama around parking which can sometimes be a hassle between Midtown and coordinating with the concierges, and they simply figured it all out and showed up where they were supposed to be when they were supposed to be there.
While the job took the full allotted time of two 4 hour sessions on subsequent days, they adjusted readily to problems as they came up and always kept me in the loop. In the end, it turned out the tile was going to be fine on its own and they resisted the urge to "add value" by painting it, and the shower looks fantastic now. Throughout, and his associates were on-task and professional.
I was very pleased with the value of the work, which cost half to a third as much as the lowest estimates for demolition work, and I was very happy not to have to deal with the chemicals and the grueling labor myself. One typically can't blanket endorse a large company with many different subcontractors working for them like Unique, but in this experience I was very impressed with the work done and the manner in which they did it, and the cost was reasonable.

The technician was on time and done in less than a day. The tub now looks wonderful - shiny and just like new. The technician cleaned up after himself. He kept the disruption to a minimum, covering our rugs by the bathroom and closing the bathroom door and opening the window to let the fumes out. The company followed up with detailed instructions on ...More how to care for the tub. Their price matched the lowest estimate we got and they stuck to it. the owner was a pleasure to deal with on the phone.

That evening went by and no e-mailed estimate. Several days went by and no e-mailed estimate. After a week, I called and left a message with both my phone number and e-mail address (just in case he'd gotten it wrong) and still no response. It's been almost two weeks now. During the appointment I had asked ...More if the job looked doable and he said "yes", and that there were many other bathrooms he'd seen that were in much worse shape, so I don't think it was a matter of them not being able to do the job. However, even if that were the case, the least he could have done would have been to tell me so. Very unprofessional. I took off and missed work just to make the appointment.

Excellent.
Be aware the glaze stuff really smells for a day or so until it dries.
But it's worth the smell to have beautiful, shiny tub and new-looking counter/sink, both of which were in very bad condition.
