" and his team did a great job on this challenging project. As is often the case when dealing with a house in really bad shape the full extent" of the repairs is often not known until the work begins. was terrfic at communicating throughout the job and giving multiple solutions for me to choose from for each job that came up. I feel like I recieved value and great work for the money and would definitely use him again and recommend to anyone.

-Brian E.

"It is a very dirty process of routing out old cracks, filling those cracks, putting adhesive on the walls, mesh in the adhesive and then coming back and putting" plaster over that. It was all very messy and dirty but in the end their work was very good.

-Christine L.

drywall installation and repair

Many homes today have walls made of drywall. Learn drywall basics, drywall alternatives and get tips for maintaining and repairing drywall.

Dear Angie: How important is it to repair plaster before repainting? Our ceilings have peeling paint that we’re pretty sure was caused by past water damage. Since the water problem is no longer an issue, can we simply repaint the ceilings or should we first repair any underlying plaster damage? – Sara S., Elgin, Illinois

My sister-in-law uses brite white toothpaste and rubs it into those small holes. No prep, no sanding.

I've used wall liner (it applies like wallpaper only thicker) to cover a multitude of "wall sins" over the years. In my opinion it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. It doesn't look cheap or tacky, it's inexpensive, non-labor intensive and not messy to install.

I used it for the first time about 15 years ago to cover a faux brick tile on my lower kitchen walls that couldn't be removed. It was either tear the wall down or take a chance on $40 worth of wall liner. It did the job beautifully and lasted. Since then I've used it to cover paneling, a badly gouged wall after a kitchen remodel and a wall that looked like a pegboard after floor to ceiling shelving was removed.

Friends and family (and realtors!) have been amazed by the transformation after applying this simple inexpensive product.

Remember, you not only have to remove the popcorn texture, but also redo the ceiling in some other texture.

Price will depend on several factors:

1) how much the contractor you choose hates removing popcorn or textured ceilings - some charge $1 or so/SF extra just because they hate it. There are even some who bid total drywall replacement cheaper than removing the popcorn, so you have to first find contractors who are happy to do that work, or your prices will be out of the realistic range

2) if the popcorn predates about 1990, then it could likely have asbestos in it, which doubles or triples the price, and in many cases uncapsulating it with a spray coating and then removing the drywall entirely is actually cheaper than all the protective measures necessary if it is scraped off.

3) whether the popcorn is primarily gypsum and vermiculite (comes off REAL easy) or was the plaster of paris variety, which takes a fair amount of soaking to soften it enough to scrape off

4) what type of finish you are replacing it with - if a textured ceiling, slapcoat, knockdown finish or paneling, not real problem. If you want to go with a perfectly smooth ceiling (generally a bad idea as any variations in the drywall on a ceiling surface really shows up dramatically), then it will demand a lot of care in preparing the scraped surface, and a complete surface drywall compound skim coat to smooth out the scrapes and gouges from the removal process.

5) what underlying conditions are - if there is a lot of furniture to move around (should go to adjacent rooms) or cover and work around, high-quality rug or hardwood floor to super-protect or such, will drive cost up.

I have seen costs run from as low as $0.60/SF to $1.25/SF (for removal only). Generally, remove and recoat with a surface texture of some kind (anything but smooth) and paint will run you about $2.50-3.50/SF.

Now the bad news - if asbestos containing, can run from $5-10/SF. Many homeowners in that situation go the other legal route - have it encapsulated with an asbestos-rated sealant by an asbestos contractor, then paint it and leave it for the next homeowner to decide what to do about it. Some contractors encapsulate it and then put a 1/4" thick drywall layer over it - this usually looks like a disaster unless it has a VERY rough textured finish on it, because putting drywall sheet over a rough surface like popcorn invariably means a wavy surface commonly looks like a gently rolling ocean surface.

It went very well. Mr. is an excellent workman and very conscientious about his work. He was very good about protecting furnishings in room and moved and covered all items that might be damaged with dust I wish I could find more workmen like him for other projects.

worked on my neighbor's residence and the work was exceptional so I hired him without reservation. The scope of our work was fairly extensive and I was immediately impressed by his thorough assessment of the project. The estimated cost was more than fair and by the end of the job I realized that I had been gifted a highly ...More skilled artisan with a deep commitment to delivering quality service. Other contractors working on my home commented on the superior quality of 's work and inquired if he was available to do finishing work on their projects. The walls and ceilings of my home look like new construction. has worked on both commercial and residential projects and seemed to really enjoy the challenge that my residence presented. He's not opposed to small jobs and recently repaired a wall for another one of my neighbors. We're all extremely pleased with the outcome of his work. In addition to being skilled, he's very reliable, honest and personable.

The total price includes the hourly pay plus materials and I thought it was a pretty good deal considering the work that he did.

Having involved with our project was a smart decision and it is with pleasure that we recommend her to anyone with even the most discriminating tastes. has many years of experience working with designers and homeowners, in both old and new construction, with a wide range of budgets and with a variety ...More of tradespeople. She is professional and committed to excellence and we are thrilled with her work.
We initially called her and set up an appointment for her to come to our home and assess the scope of our project. While she was here taking measurements she walked us through the process so we knew exactly what to expect. She patiently answered our questions and offered suggestions. She offered to set up another appointment to meet and pick out our grass cloth. I really can't say how much I appreciate her knowledge, patience and guidance in helping us choose just the right products, save money and plan everything so the work flowed seamlessly with our other projects.
The day of the project she arrived promptly and set up with a minimum of fuss. She removed all the hardware and fixtures, removed the old from the bathroom wall. She then began work on the stairwell. This was a very tricky area but she was so organized and had the proper equipment so it went smoothly. We felt quite comfortable leaving her to her work and had no problem trusting her in our home. We left for the day and came home not only to a very beautiful stairwell but with all the hardware back in place, the areas cleaned up and our house locked up just as we had requested.
Thank you, !
