"
and his crew arrived on time per agreed upon schedule and accomplished the work over two half days rather than one full day because of impending rain on day" 1. The crew members were all really nice guys who worked together as a team and were very professional in every aspect of the grading, filling and paving process. Their equipment appeared very well kept, everything in good working order, and they were especially careful when using it not to damage any of the plants and trees on either side of the driveway or anywhere else in the yard (which was a challenge considering our tight and sloping drive). We learned that
, who ran most of the equipment, has over 45 years experience and many of his crew have been with him 10-15 years, which was very reassuring. They all seemed to know what to do when with very little direction needed. We found
company when we saw his crew paving another driveway on our street, so we contacted him for a quote.
quote seemed very fair and was in line with others received, but his friendly and confident manner stood out from the competition, plus we were impressed with the results of the work he did on our neighbor's larger driveway. As the crew departed, they cleaned up every bit of debris from the area - including the street outside our home and left caution materials and clear instructions for on-going care. The job looks terrific and we plan to followup with
for the sealing process recommended for 90 days hence. In short we would not hesitate to recommend this company to anyone wanting professional, friendly driveway paving services.

had the best price for what we wanted done. Kept the appointment promptly as arranged. All workers were polite and seemed good at doing their jobs. I was at" first disappointed that one area was not as smooth as I would have liked,
came up to talk with meand explained the difficulty of machinery on small twisting mountain spot. Was very polite and reasonable in wanting me to be pleased. In retrospect, I had an unreasonable expectation, when I have looked at other driveways/roads in our area. The driveway has
up very well through battering storms in the months since. We have received several comments from friends and neighbors about how good it looks. We are now very pleased, and would hire him again in a heartbeat.

"The BigFoot crew worked diligently to excavate the existing asphalt....all the while, trying to accommodate drivers and delivery vehicles that required access to resident's homes." It was a difficult process on a narrow roadway (especially with dump trucks hauling off the old pavement), but they finished that work in a week and immediately placed down a thick
of crushed stone, which made the road driveable. The next week they began the actual paving process, using customized equipment that allowed for variable depth of pavement for areas that were deemed potentially unstable, followed by a steam roller which again heated the product and vigorously vibrated the road surface to compact the asphalt. It was a job very well done. As part of the contract, BigFoot agreed to give us a two year warranty on their work.....and two years thereafter, there were a few areas of roadway that had cracked and required re-paving. BigFoot arrived with a full crew and a truck full of hot asphalt. They first cut out the areas that required work, excavated same, refilled the area with fresh asphalt and steam rolled each section. The work was performed as promised.

If the state requires a contractor's license, then he needs to have a license in each state he intends to work in - plus state/local business licenses as applicable.

This does not mean there are not a lot of contractors who cross state lines without proper licensing - the penalties in may cases are not real severe and are just a fine, not criminal, so many take the chance.

As you say - argh  - many contractors are not really businessmen and have zero legal education, so many people get burned.

?

To overlay, with proper adhesion so it does not peel off, you first need to prepare the surface - typically heavy watercutting or sandblasting for concrete over concrete, or high-pressure presure washing and an asphalt (NOT water based cutback) adhesion coat before asphalt overlay.

Because of the prep cost, a concrete overlay commonly costs more than just tearingit out and replacing it, and if you are replacing it due to cracking and breaking up those cracks will almost always propogate or "reflect" through the new layer too with concrete. Ditto with asphalt overlay, though using a crack-stopper fabric can reduce (but usually not eliminate) that.

If just repairing ice melt/freeze thaw deterioration, a cementatious epoxy overlay can be used, though its life is less (normally) than new concrete. Usually used for limited areas like garage area pad, not entire driveways.

Asphalt overlays over somewhat deteriorated concrete can work well, but if not prepared and high-pressure (about 5000 psi or higher) cleaned to remove ALL deteriorated material, they can peel off because they stuck to deteriorated loose material rather than sound concrete. Again, can cost as much for a 1-1/2 to 2 inch overlay as for a 3-4 inch full replacement by the time you are done, because the prep work is labor intensive.

Even if this is just a surficial deterioration issue, I would talk to several contractors (site visit) about alternatives and let them bid both an overlay and a replacement (or whichever options they are inclined to bid on), then after getting opinions from all three and bids for all options, make your decision. I am pretty confident that total replacement will be both the most recommended and the cheapest, at probably about $2-4/SF for asphalt or 4-6/SF for concrete - commonly nearer the lower than higher range for most jobs and locales. If the overlay and replacement cost is pretty close,I would go with the replacement because overlays over concrete are always somewhat iffy as to how long they will last, especially concrete overlays.

For cost comparison, except in extreme freeze-thaw country, you can figure a concrete drive will last about twice as long as an asphalt one.

I called
Asheville Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
to request a estimate and he scheduled a time to come out and look at my driveway. He showed up on time when he said he would. He measured everything and explained the the nature of the work. The estimate was by far the cheapest I had gotten and I was reluctant to schedule the work because of the old... "you get what you pay for" saying.

Job went perfectly, except for minor weather delays. Crew showed up on time daily, worked steadily with minimal breaks, cleaned up after all work, and job came in UNDER estimate.

Had to wait a few weeks to get it done - the" monsoon season" this year had them backed up. They fortunately came mid-day on the first of two consecutive dry days that we had not experienced for several weeks. I had sealed the cracks in the driveway earlier, and the quote reflected that.
The job was done well, and it got to dry pretty good for a few days. So far everything looks good. Will be interested to see how it looks in the spring. I decided to have them do it after I watched a neighbor spend almost as much money with sealer from Lowes last fall, and this spring you could hardly tell that it had been done.

THis is the second time we have used the services of
Asheville Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
. Our first positive experience was having sections of the asphalt resealed and this job was competed quickly and well.Based on our prior experience, we chose Appalachian again for this more serious project.
When we called to set up an appointment we were not able to get one immediately. We waited several days, but when Mr.
Asheville Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
came he was able to size up the situation quickly, provide a written estimate within 24 hours, and give an approximate starting date. Due to his prior commitments and weather conditions, we waited nearly a month before work began. During this time Mr.
Asheville Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
kept us apprised of his schedule (usually communicated quickly by email) so we knew that he was on top of things.
This project took three days to complete. The crew saw cut and hauled off debris. Then they excavated the hole --10'x12'x 3.5' deep. They installed 500 x fabric and up to 14 tons of rip rap stone, 7 tons of ballast, another 500x fabric
Asheville Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
and 7 tons ABC road bond gravel. Final installation was 5.5' 4000 psi concrete with wire mesh priced @ square foot (460 sq feet).
We were very impressed with the obvious expertise of the workmen on the job. Our driveway is narrow and curvy, but the drivers of the massive dump trucks and cement mixer made it look easy! All were very courteous, neat and did everything possible to minimize damage to existing landscaping. They arrived early AM and worked diligently until after 5:00 most days. The designated foreman,
Asheville Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
, was very conscientious about communicating the schedule and predicted outcome.
The final cost was higher than the estimate because additional concrete was needed but we understood this and were just glad to have the work completed so efficiently and looking so good. Wish we could have done the whole driveway !
